To ask what the hell to do about my leaking arse!

498 replies

alittlebitembarrassing · 03/01/2022 22:25

Exactly as the title says. Very crass but it is a literal pain in my arse and I’m starting to feel very unwell.

Backstory: I have inflammatory bowel disease and have had my large intestine removed. I had a stoma for 10 months and then a reversal surgery joining my small intestine to my rectum. I have mild proctitis left in my rectum.

A week ago, my anus started itching and leaking fluid. It has been getting worse and worse to the point I am leaking through my underwear to my clothes, I am uncomfortably wet all of the time and it is so painful to go to the toilet that I almost vomit from the pain and am just living by having cold baths.

The leaking is mucous, I’ve developed wounds on my bum cheeks from the dampness, and it is mixed with blood and green pus.

I developed abdominal pain with it two days ago so went to A&E who were useless, have referred me to gastro (no idea how long that will take), and told me my infection markers are raised so gave me antibiotics. Nothing else.

Today I have been on off sleeping and am feeling feverish and unwell in myself. When I was at A&E my heart rate was 120 and my blood pressure was high, but they said they weren’t concerned.

I am leaking massively to the point it’s not even just damp it is like water is pouring out of me.

I don’t want to waste another 8 hours in A&E to be sent home, but I’m feeling unwell in myself now, I can’t go to the toilet properly because it absolutely kills.

What do I do?!

@SquirrelG

Why are people so bloody shocked she couldn’t get an ambulance?

Well, I for one don't live in the UK, so surely I am allowed to be shocked to hear about it?

IMO it's more worrying that people aren't more shocked, but accepting of this as ok.
Yuppie20 · 04/01/2022 13:18

You are at serious risk of sepsis, you absolutely need to go to A&E today. Sepsis is very much a life and death situation. It's one of the biggest killers in this country, don't delay

Yuppie20 · 04/01/2022 13:21

Sorry only reading the updates now, hope you get the treatment you need !

huffyhufferson · 04/01/2022 13:27

Let us know how you are doing.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 04/01/2022 13:34

I'm glad you got to hospital and they saw you quickly
I hope you are feeling more comfortable today, and will have a treatment plan in place.Thanks

Pythonesque · 04/01/2022 13:37

I hope you are starting to feel better and are kept in until things are manageable again.

It sounds like you have badly fallen through the cracks - I would have thought that you should have only been discharged from the surgeons if you had a followup plan with a gastroenterologist or at least a rapid route to contact an IBD team.

duvetdayforeveryone · 04/01/2022 13:47

@alittlebitembarrassing

I got straight through and am being looked after with a cannula waiting on next steps. I was only waiting in the waiting area for five minutes. Bloods been taken too. Thanks everyone, and for those who are lecturing me, I don’t think ambulances are taxis. But as someone who has had a perforated bowel before and feels the worst I have in ages, I thought it was the right call. My partner ended up giving me a lift because we had no other option.
I hope you are finally given the treatment you need, and you start feeling better soon Flowers

CharlotteRose90 · 04/01/2022 14:08

Oh bless you op I hope you’re getting sorted . I have inflammatory bowel disease too and you have the exact symptoms of a perianal fistula. Absolutely awful things and they make you feel rotten. Hopefully they scan you and find it. Also before you leave the hospital make sure you see a gastro consultant and if possible an Ibd nurse. I can’t believe they’ve discharged you following surgery it’s a condition that can’t be cured even after having a stoma. Seen it happen way too often in my area.

skellingtonboot · 04/01/2022 14:12

@CheshireKitten123

Do try and keep up.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 04/01/2022 14:15

Have people actually been calling you out for using the ambulance service? What a fecking brass neck. If this isn’t an emergency I don’t know what would be?? Op I really hope you are feeling better today and they can find a way to help you. Some people are inhuman.

SarahBop · 04/01/2022 14:20

[Flowers] Glad you are in the right place now OP.

You were absolutely right to call 999, You sounded very unwell and I too immediately thought sepsis/serious infection.

swampusdonkus · 04/01/2022 14:52

Glad that you were seen very quickly in A&E and are now in the right place to receive treatment. What you've been through sounds awful; wishing you well and hope you are on the mend soon 💐

FlissMumsnet · 04/01/2022 14:59

For anyone who's missed the OP's update we can report they made it to A&E in the small hours and after a (mercifully) short wait were admitted.

Get well soon alittlebitembarrassing

You poor sod, I really feel for you. I am so glad you are getting urgent medical attention. If you get any say in the matter, elect for another stoma. I have seen so many anastomosis breakdowns in my surgical career, and with ongoing inflammatory bowel disease, it's not going to get better on its own.

Sending you healthy healing vibes.

glasgowLil · 04/01/2022 15:16

Really hope you are getting treatment and are feeling a bit better. Xx

Some of these replies where a commentator only read the first post of the OP are so annoying. If you're concerned about the OP, scroll through the thread and just read their posts - which are highlighted in green, to see how they made out in the end.

GalacticGoddess · 04/01/2022 15:32

Thank goodness you got seen OP. Wishing you the best and a good recovery! Thanks

liveforsummer · 04/01/2022 15:52

I hope you can update when you feel up to it to let us know how you are. What an awful experience for you.
