Blair knighthood

Mummyrowland · 03/01/2022 02:54

Nearly half a million people have signed a petition over his knighthood in 48 hours.

It should be removed and he shouldn't be awarded it.

After all what did he do that was good?

What about all the squaddies he sent to their deaths over the supposed wmds?

High ranking members of the armed forces are threatening resignation if his award isn't reconsider

What lies and greed?
Is that the best you can do.

mynamesnotMa · 08/01/2022 13:02

Tom Bowers is nothing but a sensationalist journalist. He blamed all of our present leaders faults on his violent abusive father. Giving the oaf no credence as a leader. His books aren't exactly an empirical source of wisdom.

mynamesnotMa · 08/01/2022 13:21

Do list the values of Johnson for Us?

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 18:21

Estimated fortune of £60 million - a large part made off of profiteering from the housing crisis, owner of 10 homes (he must be fuming that 12 Homes Sunak has overtaken him in that regard). Yet...

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/tony-blair-cherie-furlough-covid-b1989173.html

Tony and Cherie. The epitomy of greed.
(Does anyone else remember Cherie's appallingly ill mannered grab in Australia - when she was told to select something for free as a gift...?).

Abuse of furlough, and legal but immoral tax avoidance schemes (check out Pandora papers and the Blairs).

No wonder there's no money to fund FFP3s for HCP, HEPA filters in schools, paying a decent wage to care home staff, or unfreezing the pitiful Local Housing Allowance rate.

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 18:27

doubt Blair really wants to be a arcane title anyway.

Then why did he accept it? He wouldn't have been the first to (politely) turn it down. Some people have principles and integrity. Foreign concept for Blair.

He wants the title because it will help make him even more money - on his lucrative lecture tours, and advising figures with dubious human rights backgrounds.

A family member of mine has it right. Blair (and his wife) are laughing all the way to the bank.

Don't be ridiculous! Sunak and many others in the Tory party have fortunes way above Blairs & have far more properties.

He has done what every PM since year dot has done and cashed in on being a former PM..... even TM charges a small fortune on the speech circuit.

His 60m wouldn't give carers and other health workers a 0.1% pay rise, let alone pay for 100s of 1000s of FFP3 masks or housing allowances.... but a wind fall tax on oil companies who have made record profits this year would :)

haribofiend · 08/01/2022 18:42

Thing is the honours are not a popularity contest.

Elections are though and he won 3 of them.

He introduced minimum wage
Free nursery for 3 and 4 year olds
good friday agreement and restored government to n.Ireland
Devolution for Scotland and Wales
He invested in our public services like no other government had since.

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 18:46

Nope. Tony Blair is the only ex PM in modern history to have claimed every single possible financial expense allowable. Don't you remember the furore some years back - when it emerged that (unlike the others including Thatcher, Major, and Brown) Blair claimed expenses to attend the Remembrance Sunday service.

I'm no fan of Brown (he continued the war on the disabled and poor with further benefit cuts, raided he pensions, and sold off our gold at knock down prices) but he didn't choose to rake in millions through profiteering, and legal but immoral schemes.

I suspect that Brown was more incompetent than bad. Blair on the other hand isn't so much evil as very very greedy.

The man has no shame. Particularly when it comes to money. He's the opposite of Robin Hood.

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 18:48

As for furlough. Of course it's not just Blair. But add together all the super rich millionaires who took advantage (legally but immorally), and separately the apparently many cases of outright fraud - and it's been estimated to be millions, possibly billions of taxpayer money wasted.

FanGirlX · 08/01/2022 18:54

PM for a long time and acted on what he thought was right.

He lied about WMD in Iraq. Even the Chilcott Report says he "exaggerated the threat". So many Iraqi civilians and our servicemen died because of this.

FanGirlX · 08/01/2022 18:54

@colourfulpuddles

YABU and you need to calm down and mind your own business. He did great things for this country and you should be grateful.
We live in a democracy- it is OP's business.
Alexandra2001 · 08/01/2022 19:08

@Tealightsandd Cameron claimed DLA for his son, Cameron even then was a multi millionaire.
Then got rid of DLA once he could no longer claim it, quite reprehensible behavior, even if within the rules.

the bounce back loans is a terrible scandal, nothing short of gross incompetence by Boris and Sunak, costs 10s of billions... but we then get distracted with "......but Blairs knighthood"

It really doesn't matter.

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 19:13

No need for any distractions Alexandra

Cameron's bad behaviour doesn't negate Blair's. And afterall, he was simply following in the footsteps of the man he admired. He was the self described "heir to Blair".

NiceShrubbery · 08/01/2022 20:13

It really doesn't matter.

Of course it matters (or you would have scrolled past this thread).

It matters hugely. People need to care enough to want to change things, or we'll still be posting on here in 5-10 years' time on a Boris knighthood thread, whinging about why the country is now completely down the toilet thanks to a succession of sociopathic narcissists who we allowed to be elected and chose to call Sir.

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 20:15

You're right NiceScrubbery.

We've had a succession of bad 'uns.

And like my relative says, Blair will just laugh all the way to the bank.

But at least it shows him (and the others) the strength of public opinion.

You ve really got a downer on Blair haven't you? Every thing that has gone wrong with the UK since is down to our Tone.

He wouldn't be on my party list but the UK has had far worse before and especially since.

Blair would have handled CV better, wouldn't have had 11 years of Austerity, wouldn't have removed bursaries, funded the NHS and we'd def still be in the EU.

So a 6 maybe a 7 out of 10.

Nope, not even 3% of the electorate can be bothered to fill out their email address & sign the petition.
Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 20:21

I actually agree that Blair probably would have handled Covid better.

But then so would Thatcher. Especially because, like Germany's Angela Merkel, she had a science background. She was also unafraid to take unpopular decisions (I suppose so was Blair).

Tealightsandd · 08/01/2022 20:24

Talking of obsessed with Blair. You seem the same... just the other way. Are you Cherie?

Even Blair's son has spoken about his father's failed education policies. In fact he's set up a business aimed at repairing some of that damage.

NiceShrubbery · 08/01/2022 20:25

Nope, not even 3% of the electorate can be bothered to fill out their email address & sign the petition

Why gloat? Why not decide you want something BETTER than these tossers we keep electing?

All this post-match analysis and rating ex leaders out of 10 is a complete waste of time.

Not gloating replying to Teas who said Blair would know the strength of pop. opinion.....

We get the politicians we deserve, we have voted in these politicians, it really isn't their fault, its all on us, especially with Bojo, we knew exactly what he was like, his lying, lack of morals, contempt for family and his incompetence.

But did we care... nope.

Lol! no i bet he drives her up the wall too.

I'm no Blair fan, in fact for many years i thought he should be in the Hague.
In 1997 i was so into him, i really thought this country was going to make a sea change from facing West and become a true european country, with public services to match, then came the cigarette advertising thing and the glasses came off.

But i'm also not so naïve to blame him for all who came after.

mynamesnotMa · 08/01/2022 22:08

As I thought you can't answer.

mynamesnotMa · 09/01/2022 11:47

Bullshit
Have you read the newspapers....again answer the bloody question..

mynamesnotMa · 09/01/2022 11:57

Values positive change these shower have done?
Such as have they made any positive changes to levelling the playing field in education?
What support do the provide for business?
Have they encouraged foreign trading improved international relations?
Do you feel BJ is an ethical responsibile Leader? Did he clearly explain to the people how we would deal with this pandemic. Did he communicate clearly the expectations on schools to keep going despite being told repeatedly children are Vectors?
Has he made friends with Europe to ensure Britain maintains its position as a global trader?
Does he spend tax payers money like water expenses you say...
Can he read a pre written speech which sounds intelligent and researched.
Does he just shout out Old Eatonian sound bites that are meaningless.
Does he lie constantly and with no remorse....
Please correct me if I'm wrong we have the most corrupt unscrupulous government in living memory whose mistakes will undoubtedly take years if ever to rectify..
They couldn't even come close to New Labour achievements.
