At primary school, we sometimes used to have "cheese puffs" for dinner. I'm fairly certain they were just puff pastry and cheese but I can't replicate them. They were kind of like a cross between cake and a Yorkshire pudding inside, and looked like a scone.

Cant find a recipe that looks right on google. I'm aware they have no nutritional value but I really want to taste these again. Anyone else have a silly childhood food like this?

(And if you know what I'm talking about and have the recipe I'd be eternally grateful Wink)

Very sorry - have not has time to read whole thread, just the first few pages. But just in case no-one has mentioned the following:

@pastypirate
Here we are - these are mini versions; the cake shop ones used to be larger. They were a way of using up stale cake!

I posted a similar recipe a few pages back, scottishnames Smile Used to have a Saturday job in a cake-shop where they sold the cake versions. Sometimes I made the smaller, truffle versions to give away as Christmas presents, until I discovered the delicious evil that is chocolate ganache...

scottishnames · 10/01/2022 14:34

Great minds think alike, Grawlix! I can remember seeing the truffle cakes at a posh cafe maybe 40 years ago. They often sold out very quickly.

Sorry I repeated your information, though. No offence intended.

Anyone remember japs? thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk/bake-offs/clare-chambers-jap-cakes/

scottishnames · 10/01/2022 18:46

Yes sue but 40 + years ago they didn't have a coffee bean - what was that!!? - on top. And they did not taste strongly - if at all - of coffee. They might, perhaps, have had some sort of chocolate button on top, but to be honest I can't remember anything in detail.

Modern versions look very rich, but the ones I remember from my youth were not so. Possibly some ghastly confectioner's concoction rather than real butter cream? If I had to remember anything, I would say that the creamy stuff - whatever it was - tasted of almond essence rather than real coffee.

But it's all a long time ago, and I'm sure that there were regional variations. My reminiscences come from student days in Cambridge, if that's remotely relevant.

I bloody loved Toast Toppers!!

NinaDefoe · 10/01/2022 20:49

Some very angry MNetters on this toast toppers thread! 😂

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3771617-Fucking-Toast-Toppers

I buy 400g cans of M&S chunky chicken in white sauce (they used to sell small 200g can too but not sure if they still do).

Heat contents of can in a saucepan and break the chicken up as you stir it.

Spread it on thick crusty white toast and grill.

IT IS GORGEOUS 😋

@Eggshausted I loved the lolly gobble choc bombs but I'd not thought of them for years .

cruisecrazy · 11/01/2022 15:29

A delicious mug of Bournevita. Frys five boys chocolate.

cobblers123 · 11/01/2022 16:51

I remember Five Boys chocolate bar and Bournevita too. I also used to drink Milo and haven't seen that for years.
