At primary school, we sometimes used to have "cheese puffs" for dinner. I'm fairly certain they were just puff pastry and cheese but I can't replicate them. They were kind of like a cross between cake and a Yorkshire pudding inside, and looked like a scone.

Cant find a recipe that looks right on google. I'm aware they have no nutritional value but I really want to taste these again. Anyone else have a silly childhood food like this?

(And if you know what I'm talking about and have the recipe I'd be eternally grateful Wink)

@CanIbeRio

Does anyone remember a pink strawberry custard type dessert that came in a can....think it was called Sweetheart and i think it was by Heinz. Probably early 70s. Loved it....Probably as much for its colour as its taste as I was obsessed by all things pink and girly!
Yes! I have a feeling you had to mix it with milk or something and it 'set' a little. Think there was peach flavour too with little bits of strawberry or peach in it. Deeeelicious!

@MostTacticalNameChange

KP Choco Dips and Melody Pops were amazing too - both still around in very select local shops...possibly from original 80s/90s stock deliveries.
I saw melody pops on Tesco online shopping last week!

The excitement!!

I live between a Waitrose and an Aldi, tend to do about 50/50.

I do that too. There's an Aldi opposite the Waitrose here so I go to Waitrose then cross the road to Aldi, stock up there then finish at Home Bargains which is next to Aldi.

I lead such an exciting life I know, but it is useful having them so close together.

HoldingTheDoor · 08/01/2022 17:08

Wrong thread. I blame a lack of sugar. Bring back Secret bars, Flytes, Pyramints and Deltas.

Vesta Chow Mien was totally exotic when I was a teenager. The sublime magic of the crispy noodles puffing up in the hot frying pan was an absolute culinary delight.
I watched a programme of Nigel Slater cooking with someone who did the crispy noodle trick, and Nige feigned amazement, but there is no way that he didn't do that himself as a teenager.

AdaColeman · 08/01/2022 17:26

@AngelicInnocent
Sainsburys do something very similar, called Bacon Brunch, a great store cupboard stand by.

Benjispruce5 · 08/01/2022 17:52

Brannigan’s crisps! Blast from the past, thank you.

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/01/2022 17:59

The bright orange processed cheese slices are just cheese, processed (a process invented to keep cheese for longer) - they have never not been .. just cheese, and you can still get them, usually labelled burger cheese these days.

I miss.. sweets -Pacers, the stripey chewy mint, and Ipso Calypso, probably the closest thing to those now would be Millions, but Ipso came in a plastic box that would click together with other Ipso boxes a bit like lego.

School dinner puddings I recall fondly...

Yoghurt and a big biscuit
Iced cake in pink custard (sometimes it was chocolate cake in mint custard).
Jam rolypoly n custard.

Victoria Woods song 'Music and Movement' takes me right back to primary school... it mentions 'spotted dick and custard, all dick and not a lot of spot'... which is EXACTLY how ours was...

...that whole song describes my primary school experience to the letter though (not a huge surprise despite the age difference between her and I, as we both went to school in the same local authority area!).

Heinz sandwich spread. I mean, it looked like vomit but it tasted amazing.
I spotted that in my local co-op the other day...

Those sponge cakes at primary with the pink icing were the best 😀.

FanGirlX · 08/01/2022 18:32

@Tillymintpolo

Ice magic, you poured it on ice cream and it went hard.
You can get a version of that in my local co-op too.

I've seen their own brand arctic roll in there too.

Starting to think my local co-op might exist in a 70/80s time warp.

milliememum · 08/01/2022 18:48

Knorr sizzle and stir, I think it was called, especially the Mexican fajita one

@AdaColeman - vesta chow mein was our regular Saturday night treat. Those crispy noodles were pure magic.

Lolly Gobble Choc Bombs! I used to love them.

Oh god, now I want Toast Toppers.

My mum sometimes heats up a can of creamed mushrooms and puts it on toast, a la toast toppers. I'll need to pick up a can.

Your Mom's a genius, why have I never thought of doing that? Mushroom toast toppers was my favourite
ultrablue · 08/01/2022 20:42

@jo55ie

I really miss Mignions Morceaux (not sure of spelling) by Phileas Fogg - like mini garlic breads ... garlic intense dream ... nommmmmmm

Dh really misses mash potato toasted sandwiches with salad cream or mayo. ... sounds disgusting so can't even bring myself to try ... ewwwwwww

Oh god, my driving instructor many years ago used to feed me those garlic bread things as I was driving along during my lessons. I'm sure that would be frowned upon nowadays Grin
