At primary school, we sometimes used to have "cheese puffs" for dinner. I'm fairly certain they were just puff pastry and cheese but I can't replicate them. They were kind of like a cross between cake and a Yorkshire pudding inside, and looked like a scone.

Cant find a recipe that looks right on google. I'm aware they have no nutritional value but I really want to taste these again. Anyone else have a silly childhood food like this?

(And if you know what I'm talking about and have the recipe I'd be eternally grateful Wink)

@NinaDefoe

no one seems to have heard of it but at school we used to have jam and butter on Weetabix was delicious

We did this!
The latest weetabix advert shows them covered it in red jam!
It reminded me!

My mum used to give us this for supper! I still have it now.
CeratopsofthePharoahs · 04/01/2022 10:40

I'm so jealous (and hungry) reading this. I had to have packed lunches all through school. I'm sat there eating warm sandwiches that have taken on the flavour of the brown banana that has sat in the box with them all morning, looking across the lunch room at the lucky kids who get to eat chips, crispy bacon and can have cake and custard.
When ever anyone suggests a packed lunch for anything I automatically shudder. Still can't eat bananas now without feeling sick.

M & S used to do a foil package of freeze dried potato with onion and bacon in that you fried. It was divine but I think it was viewed as a bit common for the M & S image so they stopped doing it after about a year.

NashvilleQueen · 04/01/2022 10:57

Dream Topping (instead of fresh cream)

Rise & Shine (instead of fresh orange juice). Incidentally my mum always took this to Spain with us to have at breakfast. You know, to the country where actual oranges grow.

@whatth

DM used to make lemon meringue pie from a "kit" when we were kids. The lemon bit was made from a kind of yellow bean that melted down into a curd. I think you had to add water or milk. I remember watching the bean dissolve in the pan. Does anyone else remember this?
Yes, I do. My DM used those now and then, odd really, when she nearly always cooked from scratch. LMP is dh’s favourite but I only make it about once a year, for his birthday. It’s a major faff making it from scratch, but admittedly well worth it.

Now and then I still buy a couple of Fray Bentos pies, for the odd bone idle dinner for me and dh. One each, no potatoes, just frozen peas. They taste even better for the sod-all cooking factor. 🙂

The packed lunch memories has reminded me of Sholer in a tetra pack. Beautiful stuff. White grape or red grape. Made up for the crap warm sandwich.

I'd forgotten how warm the sandwiches used to get. Shippams salmon spread on white plastic bread, warm and slightly smushed. Peach melba yogurt that always threw a splat of yoghurt on your clothes when you opened it. Or egg salad cream sandwiches that emitted a fart smell when you opened your Tupperware box 😂
Vampirethriller · 04/01/2022 12:08

Weetabix and butter with strawberry jam is one of my favourites!

vintage21 · 04/01/2022 12:12

what happened to square ice cream cones with a slice of ice cream from a block in it
or that chocolate ice cream sauce that froze solid when added to ice cream to make a crispy shell
tutti frutti ice cream had cherries glace fruits and sultanas in it years ago

SwishSwishBisch · 04/01/2022 12:22

Oh @cobblers123 if you find any of the cheese & bacon grills please come back and tell me! I fear they’ve been lost alongside all the other overprocessed and delicious things Jamie Oliver took umbrage with Grin

Flowersandhearts · 04/01/2022 12:22

McDonalds 1990s pizzas - they were delicious but only around for a short time.

DustyMaiden · 04/01/2022 12:34

Not rubbish but salad. From DFs garden with Jersey royals and Heinz salad cream.

My DMs cooking gave me a love of salad. The only thing edible was chips.

I remember the ice cream van did those with individually wrapped oblongs of ice cream in a waxy sort of paper - you could have the square cone or two wafers.

For some reason, to me, it never tasted as a nice as a scoop in a round cone.

Wejustdontknow · 04/01/2022 13:53

@LemonJelly76 my sister used to tell me about TomToms when she started secondary school and how good they were, I went up two years later and they had stopped selling them. This was in South Yorkshire around 1994 I would guess. To this day she always says how good they were to eat

Mrsjayy · 04/01/2022 13:57

Walls used to make the square ice cream my Gran just had a fridge with the tiny freezer box and the square ice creams were all she had in it as nothing else fitted !

Lovesplasticstraws · 04/01/2022 14:03

There was a short lived raspberry ripple square ice-cream. Yellow ice-cream and proper raspberry sauce. Not white and red syrup. Could have been Walls or Dale Farm (NI) late 80s, early 90s.

foreverlove · 04/01/2022 14:16

In the mid 90s M&S used to have the most delicious Prawn Cocktail sandwiches and Prawn, Avocado and Tomato sandwiches. I used to love them!

shallwethree · 04/01/2022 14:24

@scurryfunger

Does anyone remember the chocolate spread that Cadbury's did in the 80's - it came in a margarine style plastic tub (round), the chocolate spread wasn't thick like Nutella nor did it have any hint of hazelnut. More like a honey or golden syrup consistency and really dark and chocolatey- spread on a thick white slice - it was amazing! God knows why they stopped doing it, Nutella as lovely as it is, is no substitute
Cadbury's chocolate spread was the Best Thing Ever! I wish there was something that came close today.
MissyB1 · 04/01/2022 14:42

To me the square ice creams tasted much better than the scoops. Loved them in between two wafers.

bendmeoverbackwards · 04/01/2022 14:45

Isn’t there a restaurant in London that serves nostalgic school type dinners?

readyshreddiescook · 04/01/2022 15:00

Dan Bars (an individually wrapped cake bar). Would love to have another one.

And Dan Cake Marble Half Moon Cake - you can still get these, I found one in a local corner shop and then ate the whole thing myself over the space of two days... They still taste as good!

readyshreddiescook · 04/01/2022 15:01

@SpookyScarySkeletons

Yes! We also had those pizzas in the bag (we were also skint growing up!)

readyshreddiescook · 04/01/2022 15:07

@Mykittensmittens Trebor mints!
