At primary school, we sometimes used to have "cheese puffs" for dinner. I'm fairly certain they were just puff pastry and cheese but I can't replicate them. They were kind of like a cross between cake and a Yorkshire pudding inside, and looked like a scone.

Cant find a recipe that looks right on google. I'm aware they have no nutritional value but I really want to taste these again. Anyone else have a silly childhood food like this?

(And if you know what I'm talking about and have the recipe I'd be eternally grateful Wink)

Saucy sponge. It was a packet mix in a box, you just added milk or/and an egg and baked it in the oven. You ended up with a sponge pudding with some sauce, by magic it seemed. In the late 70s or early 80s. Loved it.

Supermousse! I'm having flashbacks of the orange and lemon flavour. Those cute little tubs with the curved-in base that they came in.

Spira chocolate bars.

Fry's mint cream bars, and the ones that had a different flavour in each chunk.

Toffee tart, as made for school dinners. I've tried to recreate it but without success.

You can get fry’s mint creams on Amazon, the peppermint, normal mint, strawberry and orange ones, haven’t seen the five flavours one for years though 😕

I used to love Carousel, a box of chocolates and stared almonds and lovely stuff.

Also Newberry Fruits, you can still buy them but they don’t have the liquid centres anymore ☹️

Kipling treacle tart

These were things that for some reason we only had on our annual uk self catering holiday in Cornwall

You missed the point of the thread. It's for food that was rubbish. Mr Kipling Treacle Tart was food of the Gods. So was Sara Lee Chocolate Gateau.

Food that was rubbish was Flora margarine,

BritWifeInUSA · 02/01/2022 23:48

Bright pink blancmange

Mattesson sandwich pate.

Those iced buns at school that were just a Hot Dog bun with icing on top.

BanditoShipman · 02/01/2022 23:50

There were also choc ices, I think from Iceland, they had a thick line of raspberry sorbet running through the middle. I loved them!!

Oh yea! We used to get the lemon one!

There was something called supermousse when I was little. I think it was stored in the freezer. No one seems to remember it. I think we had it once or twice, I loved it, my dad looked at the E numbers and decided not to buy it again!

Corned beef in a tin that you used a key to open (and risked ripping a vein open on the resultant jagged edge) in a white bread sandwich with salad cream.

NinaDefoe · 02/01/2022 23:53

I know you can still get them but nik-naks were the best!

I also ate long frozen ice pops by the dozen!
I still buy them now & love them!

noblegreenk · 02/01/2022 23:53

Bacon grills. I think they were made by Danepak. They were some sort of recta guarantee processed bacon, with cheese on top, coated in breadcrumbs. Not had them for years but loved them in my late teens

I liked a Buffet Bar in the early 90’s. A long scotch egg but with coleslaw in the middle. Like everything, they tweaked the recipe and it’s lost it’s crunch, it’s flavour and it’s size.
Ooh yes. I used to grab them for lunch, particularly when skint, because they were much cheaper than an actual sandwich and reasonably filling...

Sliced Corned beef fried with brown sauce on cheap white sliced bread 😅♥️

Late 60's I remember us having a freezer for the first time. Mum took us to a shop called Bejam (?) which sold just frozen food. We bought blocks of frozen mousse that you sliced. Chocolate blocks and lemon blocks. Absolutely delicious. Also sorbet which we'd never tasted before. Still dream about a slice of frozen chocolate mousse. Sounds like a contradiction in the description!

Claudethecat · 02/01/2022 23:58

M and S tinned chicken curry extra hot. I think they still make it, but I would not eat it now!

Wreath21 · 02/01/2022 23:58

@DahliaMacNamara

I've been down a tiny rabbit hole trying to remember the competitor to the victorious Pot Noodle from around 1980. I became vegetarian around then, and if I wasn't at home it was the easiest thing to tell people I'd eat. With a few chips on the side, of course, to prove I hadn't gone completely mad. Anyway, whatever it was, I'll have one of those now, please.
There was a Knorr type of hot noodle thing then. I remember the sweet and sour version being my favourite.
Ineedapuppy · 03/01/2022 00:00

Loving the food nostalgia.

Shipman’s paste on lightly toasted cheap white bread
Raspberry ripple super mousse
Coconut Boost Bars
Warm Bovril before bed at Nanny’s
Bubble and squeak on Mondays

These days I’m excited to eat sodding Quinoa Confused

Instant mashed potato - must be the powdered kind - with loads of margarine and mayonnaise.

Horribly, horribly unhealthy in every way but the perfect comfort hangover food.

UsernameNotSavedAgain · 03/01/2022 00:05

Lardy cake 😍 my Mum used to buy it from the bakery for a weekly treat. It was lovely!

The 1st meal i always had when i went to stay with my grandparents in the 70s was spam - thinly sliced from a roll in the local shop rather than from a tin - Smash instant mash & baked beans. I remember the Smash came in small pellets, not the powder version of today which i tried for the first time recently - it tasted quite different to how i remember it.

I've a soft spot for Idahoan instant mash now, with butter stirred through & grated cheese on top

lightisnotwhite · 03/01/2022 00:14

UsernameNotSavedAgain We have a small market that sells them on the stall that does oddly large samosas and random cheeses.

If I’m ever off work during the week day it’s running I have to get one for me, one for brother and one for my work friend as they are impossible to find anywhere else.

Butterscotch Angel Delight

DoctorSnortles · 03/01/2022 00:16

Sponge cake with sprinkles

For those who wanted a recipe for school cake. I made this a while back and it was pretty close to the original, although I’m fairly sure fewer eggs were used in the interest of frugality.

Great with custard.

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/01/2022 00:18

Yes to Findus French bread pizzas, they were lovely but so hot they’d burn your mouth.

Anyone remember Walls ice lollies from the 80s? There was an ice cream one called Funny Face and a lolly shaped like a finger. It was soooo sweet.

BrendaLee · 03/01/2022 00:19

Texan bars - someone has already mentioned them. Chewy heaven.

Popping candy - a little sachet. We used to give the dog a little bit and watch the confusion on his face,

Angel delight - I seem to remember it being peach. Could eat a whole pint of it and not put on any weight 😊
