At primary school, we sometimes used to have "cheese puffs" for dinner. I'm fairly certain they were just puff pastry and cheese but I can't replicate them. They were kind of like a cross between cake and a Yorkshire pudding inside, and looked like a scone.

Cant find a recipe that looks right on google. I'm aware they have no nutritional value but I really want to taste these again. Anyone else have a silly childhood food like this?

(And if you know what I'm talking about and have the recipe I'd be eternally grateful Wink)

Yes to Findus French bread pizzas, they were lovely but so hot they’d burn your mouth.

I still buy a version of these from Tesco!
Burnt mouth, broken teeth but they’re so good!!

I think the popping candy used to be called Spacedust but might be imagining that.

TommyShelby · 03/01/2022 00:27

@Roses1221 omg! I thought I was the only one to remember the sponge puddings in a tin by Heinz. They were bloody lovely - wish they’d bring them back!

We bought faggots this winter, we’re very excited to eat them….tasteless!
Gypsy tart with a slice of apple
My DS loved the custard danish, was devastated when they stopped making them.
Nutty bar, picking all the nuts off and eating the toffee centre
Mint sensations, boiled mint sweet with a chocolate centre
Saucy sponge was a regular in our house after Sunday dinner
Sweet and Sour rice, bright red and lovely with pork chops
Texan bars, but Charleston Chew is very similar

PIGLETS! I can bloody taste them now, like bacon pig shaped potato puffs. Cheese and tomato & the beef potato puffs. Spring onion crisps from M&S in the light green bag. Ditto toast toppers & Findus crispy pancakes - the proper sized ones with the molten laver cheese and ham filling

There was something called supermousse when I was little. I think it was stored in the freezer. No one seems to remember it. I think we had it once or twice, I loved it, my dad looked at the E numbers and decided not to buy it again!
I remember that, no one I speak to ever remembers it either.

There was also a frozen cream, I think called superwhipp, my mum use to put it on trifle, I loved it.

My high school use to do yummy vegetable spring rolls I’ve never found anything close.

Primary schools pink custard and Manchester tart. I also loved school chips.

An ex boyfriend use to make corn beef hash, it was divine, I’ve never been able to get anything close to it.

Cola cubes, pear drops, sherbet pips, Bon Bon’s, bonfire toffee, cinder toffee and the sweet candied monkey nuts. I know a lot are still available, sadly my teeth can no longer stand up to eating them though.

@PlayerUno

Were they gougères?

They are a savoury choux pastry made with cheese.

Donuts in a can.
The can was actually partly cardboard and you had to hit it on the corner of the table to open it, take out the raw donuts and fry them.

I remember them from 1982. Allegedly they were discontinued because they had an addictive ingredient - that might be an urban myth, though.

Glad to see the love for toast toppers on here. Food of the gods, I was totally gutted when they stopped doing it Angry.

ImNotReallyHere · 03/01/2022 00:48

Black peas. Hot with vinegar. They were a bonfire staple and had a stall in town to get at weekends. I have spent so many years searching for somewhere to buy them from.
The black peas I see on sale online are always animal feed 😱

Bejam used to do frozen mini Cornish pasties - the pastry was dead white even when cooked and the meat was very finely minced - we used to take them to the seaside for picnics circa 1983 - 1984. They were absolutely lovely and I'd give anything to taste one again.
