Aibu to not like drag Queens?

Draggedalong1 · 01/01/2022 12:04

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

@Soberiscoolnow

*How are sketches about 'Essex Girls' a 'celebration of women'?

The whole 'Essex Girl' trope was used to write off groups of women as unintelligent and promiscuous, another way to dismiss women as unworthy.*

That’s not limited to drag is it though? Is Gavin and Stacey offensive to welsh and people from Essex?

Is TOWIE wrong because they play up to the camera?

What about the whole “bitchy yummy mummy” tripe should we stop making programs like motherland?

They are all exaggerated concepts for the purpose of entertainment!

That's not men taking the piss out of women though is it? Drag is.

In the same way that black and Asian people will make programs having a laugh at their own culture, but its not ok for white people to make programs making fun of black and Asian people.

An AFAB drag queen is literally a woman who is still a woman and does drag e.g Victoria Scone or Tete Bang (one of which is a lesbian so pretty sure she doesn’t hate women)

It’s just a saying that is commonly used

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 20:58

I get why you may not enjoy it, that’s up to you but I’m genuinely shocked and I mean SHOCKED that so many people find it “offensive”

I really think if you are that passionate about feminist issues, campaign for better maternity rights, childcare affordability, volunteer at a womens shelter

Don’t get so mad about someone prancing around in a skirt and lipstick to Britney!

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 21:00

And while I agree that drag names such as “miss carriage” is in poor taste

That’s literally just a small handful of drag artists. I don’t know who they are but by the name I’m guessing they are more “alternative” and horror style drag art is a whole thing in itself designed to be more inherently shocking in nature

But how could women do this when they have a baby hanging off their tit? Your words. Not mine.
Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 21:02

I couldn’t 😂 I’ve breastfed three of them and saved the prancing around for when I was feeling more fancy free

Although my friend is a professional dancer who is still expressing while going back to performing so I won’t deny it can be done

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2022 21:03

Sorry, what is a woman who is "literally a woman who is still a woman"?

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 21:05

I'm shocked that you think we aren't.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 21:06

Sorry, what is a woman who is "literally a woman who is still a woman"?

A female who does drag...wearing female clothing etc

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 21:06

Or if you mean the volunteering thing I strapped mine into a carrier last week and helped at a fundraiser so it can be done (if you want to and feel you can manage etc etc)

Why did you need to strap them into a carrier bag? What about a bra?

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 21:12

I strapped the baby into a baby carrier

I can’t tell if you are joking or not 😳😂

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 21:12

I think she means a baby carrier... she didn't say carrier bag 🤣

ArabellaScott · 03/01/2022 21:12

@Soberiscoolnow

I think you’ll find that most drag artists adore women and femininity which is why they do it - it’s pretty far from being woman hating if you take five minutes to learn about it properly

Read a book, have a cuppa and get a sense of humour

Do you mean: Calm down, dear? Hmm
Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 21:21

I'm not sure if we can fill out our misogny bingo cards out yet. Have we had -

Pearl clutchers
'Dear'
Calm down
Hysterical
Frothing
'It's only a joke'
Why are you not feministing better?

And the new one - 'women's vaginas do smell fishy - lighten up, it's a compliment!'

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2022 21:27

Not quite the full bingo, but "baby hanging off yet tit" is a strong new contender for the card.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/01/2022 21:27

You forgot the accusation that posters are men because they have different opinions and the I'm not saying drag is as bad as paedophilia but...Shock I thought The DUP had come onto the thread.ShockGrinGrinGrin

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 21:27

Doesn't 'baby hanging off tit' get included on the misogyny bongo too?

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 21:28

Bingo Grin

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 21:30

Oh yes, I think we can add 'baby hanging off tit' to the misogny bingo card.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 21:33

Is there anything to be said for 'baby in a carrier bag' ? Not because its offensive to women just because it made me smile

Flowertailbird · 03/01/2022 21:33

@AnyFucker

It’s sexual fetish made public. Aggressive, distasteful, demeaning to actual women.
100% correct
Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 21:36

I'm an actual woman and it's not demeaning to me. So technically it's aggressive distasteful and demeaning to SOME women.
