Aibu to not like drag Queens?

Draggedalong1 · 01/01/2022 12:04

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

@Notimeforaname

I dont see drag as 'making fun of women for starters' .
Then you need to ask why that is.

We can't tell you why you've grown up to be so accepting. You need to ask yourself, if you had a kid with SEN and some one was making jokes and pretending to have SEN, I hope you'd see that as wrong. If your kid was born an albino and someone pretended to be albino and made crass jokes about it, I hope you'd see that as wrong.

Yet these things, though not identical, are comparable, yet jokes at women's expense.by men pretending to be women by exaggeration is fine iyo.

@Notimeforaname

It’s sexual fetish made public. Aggressive, distasteful, demeaning to actual women.

I'm an actual woman and it's not demeaning to me. So technically it's aggressive distasteful and demeaning to SOME women.

Some?

86% of this 1500 strong vote agree with the OP on a site predominantly used by women.

I dont need to do anything you tell me 🤣

I'm not here telling you to go read up on drag, have a deeper closer look at it and think about it.

I totally respect your opinion that you hate it and find it misogynistic and offensive.

I know people who find certain comedians offensive. It's a matter of taste, to me.

If that makes you mad that I am so accepting/have different opinions on what is offensive to me, so be it, it impacts you, not me.

It's silly for you to tell me what I should be offended by. You dont get to control my thoughts and feelings.

What constitutes 'some' ? 14% is still some. I dont need to 'win' I'm happy to accept the majority here hates drag that doesn't 'prove' I'm wrong about my own thoughts and likes 🤣

If you ran this pole in a gay bar it'd swing the other way. Horses for courses..

@MaryAndHerNet

Let's lost.all.thebthinfs that would be problematic.to take the piss out of someone for.

Being trans.. big fucking no no..
Being black.. that's illegal.
Being gay..
Being fat..
Being blind..
Being deaf..
Being in a wheelchair..
Being mentally handicapped..
Being on the autism spectrum..

Let's make a list of all the things that you can take the piss out of and get a national TV station to make a program promoting men doing so..

Being a woman..

🤔

Sounds like Little Britain.

They apologized for the transphobia.

I don't know about the appalling attitude to the disabled, elderly, mental illness etc.

Definitely haven't apologised at the alter of cancel culture for their misogyny though.

ladylovesmilktray · 03/01/2022 23:00

I can't even think of a joke made at women's expense in RuPauls Drag Race for example. This thread is ridiculous. It's an art form - things have moved on since what some of you perceive to be drag - Widow Twankey and the like. Move with the times people.

MaryAndHerNet · 03/01/2022 23:02

That's no surprise.
Eddie Redmayne apologised for playing trans.

I don't recall any misogynistic comedians apologising to women for upset caused tbh. Men just tell women it's just 'bantz' or.some other shite.

Yup Anna Bortion is definitely a classy artiste. Karen From Accounts is also very ver clever comedy. Avery Goodlay, I mean that's just genius levels on the same heights as '4 candles'

Malestia Child.. I mean that's just Goodies type class that is...

86% of the voters said they did not think the OP was being unreasonable to be offended by drag. I am not offended by drag, but I voted YANBU because if the OP feels offended, then she feels offended. I do not invalidate the experiences of other women who hold different opinions to me on art.Smile

Yes I voted the same.

I do not invalidate the experiences of other women who hold different opinions to me

Ah, very well saidSmile

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 23:12

I mean if we are talking about drag names my personal favourite

Clit Eastwood 😂

Maybe I’m just infantile but it’s hilarious IMO

ladylovesmilktray · 03/01/2022 23:12

These are tasteless puns but this thread is about deep seated ingrained misogyny. The art form goes beyond these bad examples of drag names though you are not aware of this and I haven't the time or energy to educate you.

I haven't the time or energy to educate you.

Shame that.
I'm sure it would have been interesting, waiting as you Google examples of jokes men are making to prove they're only.dressed as over exaggerated stereotypes and not actual misogynists.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 23:17

Yes it's best you dont waste your time trying to force adults to change their mind. T'wouldnt work.

That we can agree on.

I loved drag when young, but time has changed that opinion and it won't change back any time soon.

Absolutely. Stick to your guns and think as you feel!
I've loved drag since I discovered it and I dont feel that will change. But appreciate peoples minds can change.

I knew an actual dolly grip who became a trans man.Grin

hangonamo · 03/01/2022 23:40

The pun names do make me laugh - Ella Vaday, Tia Kofi, Electra Fence, Choriza May Grin

Draggedalong1 · 03/01/2022 23:48

This is really interesting in the views held and how they are being discussed. I was reading this and nodding along, and wondering why the few drag queens I googled don’t seem to have anything like the same level of misandry. I guess there’s less to draw on. I mean there are comedy size bosoms and hugely exaggerated femal characteristics ( and I was wondering what the equivalent of ‘fishy’ was..but the drag queens seem to seem tame in comparison, or make rather attractive androgynous men. I liked wang Newton here, with his largish member, but by drag queen standards it would have to be by his knees, his chest hair would have to be 3 ft thick obscuring his face, with enormous pecs poking out and covered in tan, oh and he would have to be wearing a suit with the crotch cut out so we could see his enormous attribute poking out and possibly with a flag attached, covered in diamanté’s and caressed by artfully placed curls ( dyed lilac). I mean that just sounds awful!

And then I read ..
Franca123
Why is there not a TV show where women dress up as ridiculous men and talk about cock cheese?

Exactly! You did make me laugh😂

Ha! They’d have to say,’ OMG you are TOTALLY Stilton!’
am finding that this is opening my eyes to why I find drag distasteful now - I haven’t always. I thought this was interesting ..

So many good intelligent points ( and side discussions on here) on here.

I didn't say this op. I don't believe that to be true but respect the others opinions nonetheless.
