Aibu to not like drag Queens?

Draggedalong1 · 01/01/2022 12:04

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

@middleager

The amount of gaslighting on this thread is laughable.

Drag artists saying "fishy" while wafting away the smell is now somehow a positive compliment for women?

Good grief. I'm old enough not to buy into that bullshit thank you.

Who has said it's a compliment to women?
Omicrone · 03/01/2022 20:38

Because colloquially fishy is used to describe a woman's vaginal scent?

But women's vaginas don't smell of fish. The only people who perpetuate that idea are people who don't like women and want women portrayed as something gross and icky.

If drag queens loooooove women so much, why would they further want to perpetuate that offensive and totally untrue stereotype?

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 20:38

I think the point is being proved very well that drag is sexist. I've never liked it but assumed some of it might well be pretty harmless. Now I'm pretty sure it's all woman hating and dangerous. So good job drag fans!

Omicrone · 03/01/2022 20:40

@Soberiscoolnow

Fucking hell, had no idea so many people hated drag.

“Womanface” get over yourselves 😂😂😂😂

You clearly have no understanding of drag, the history, or the part it serves in the LGBTQ community

Your homophobia is showing ladies!

I know right!

Women who take offense at men taking the piss out of them are just crusty old homophobes who stink of fish!

Ammirite bitches?!

Some women's vaginas definitely do smell like fish.

So it is homophobic to object to men insulting women? Wow

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 20:40

The difference between drag and blackface is

Blackface openly mocks the person it impersonates

While Drag isn’t accurate in so far as they don’t have a baby hanging off their tit and have to battle for pay equality, it is a celebration rather than a mockery of feminism predominantly by people from an already ostracised group

And there are AFAB (assigned female at birth) queens to!?!? What have you got to say about them

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/01/2022 20:41

It certainly opened my eyes @Omicrone.

If you've never liked it, you being convinced it's sexist is no loss to the community

Thankfully drag is getting more popular each year. The MN view is absolutely ad odds with reality

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 20:41

Why can't women just shut up and let men do what they want! Hmm

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 20:43

'A baby hanging off their tit'. WTAF

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 20:43

I think you’ll find that most drag artists adore women and femininity which is why they do it - it’s pretty far from being woman hating if you take five minutes to learn about it properly

Read a book, have a cuppa and get a sense of humour

Franca123 · 03/01/2022 20:43

How are sketches about 'Essex Girls' a 'celebration of women'?

The whole 'Essex Girl' trope was used to write off groups of women as unintelligent and promiscuous, another way to dismiss women as unworthy.

But it's ok when drag queens do it? Then it's a 'celebration'?

Fuck off with that gaslighting bullshit.

Good for you?

Doesn't mean other women don't smell, teen girls especially are prone to a bit of pong. Hormonal changes and all that - it's natural

Please.

Anna Bortion, Miss Carriage, Poppin Cherry......but they adore women.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 20:48

Some people are making utter tits of themselves on this thread and if their intention is to defend drag, then they are doing a thoroughly piss poor job of it.

I am sure that the eyes of a lot of lurkers have been opened by this thread.

I agree. A lot of tits around!
What I am defending is my right to like drag. My opinion on drag... as I'm being told my opinion on drag is wrong. It cant be. I feel what I feel and like what I like.
As you all do.

I can completely understand that some hate drag and are disgusted by it and I have no problem accepting that and respecting that...but because others are unable to do the same, they're very frustrated that they cant make me see the world through their eyes and make me think like them.

All I can do is accept that as your opinion and carry on enjoying drag and all the joy my involvement in it brings.

Maybe one day itll be made illegal. Who knows. But I shall enjoy it while its here.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2022 20:48

No they don't. They adore their own perception of women and femininity.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/01/2022 20:49

No. Women just don’t look like that.

I'm not sure where to even start with this.

'While Drag isn’t accurate in so far as they don’t have a baby hanging off their tit and have to battle for pay equality' - what a absolutely repulsive way to describe women having to fight for equality.

' it is a celebration rather than a mockery of feminism predominantly by people from an already ostracised group' - women are another ostracised group, as has been described extensively earlier on in this very thread. Why is one oppressed group allowed to punch down on another oppressed group? Why is the ire not directed at the oppressing group?

'And there are AFAB (assigned female at birth) queens to!?!? What have you got to say about them' - human beings have their sex observed at birth and often much earlier in utero due to scans and tests. The only people who historically had their sex 'assigned' at birth were some people with rare DSD's whose sex is now determined through karotyping.

Soberiscoolnow · 03/01/2022 20:53

That’s not limited to drag is it though? Is Gavin and Stacey offensive to welsh and people from Essex?

Is TOWIE wrong because they play up to the camera?

What about the whole “bitchy yummy mummy” tripe should we stop making programs like motherland?

They are all exaggerated concepts for the purpose of entertainment!

ancientgran · 03/01/2022 20:53

Doesn't appeal to me but obviously some people like it. We can't all like the same thing.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 20:54

My mumsnet drag name would be Percy Verance ..or Freda Vagina
