Aibu to miss all this? The relaxed, laid back FUN of the 90’s to maybe maybe late 2010
ish?
I don’t smoke or take drugs anymore, hell I haven’t been able to drink in 21 months, due to long covid, but sat here watching 90’s & 2000’s music videos whilst Dh takes toddler out and thinking of the past.
Aibu to just bloody miss the simplicity and fun and to hate these times?

@dreamingbohemian

This extreme reaction to something that is objectively incontestable is something that has only happened in the past 5-7 years or so. It didn’t used to be like that.

Right, because no one was ever threatened or killed for saying 'objectively incontestable' facts like 'black people should have the same rights as white people' or 'women are not the property of men'.

Wtf are you on about? Also that sort of thing did not happen in the late 90s or early 00s. It wasn’t that long ago fgs and the majority of people were NOT casually engaging in racism and homophobia and there are still people who do it in 2021. It’s still really out of order to threaten women for saying that biology exists.
Fidgetty · 31/12/2021 20:21

Dancing with a cigarette is dangerous and selfish. You could set someone’s clothes on fire.

🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

You could still have all this OP, you'd just have to move. Where I currently live is like this to a degree. A bit of a time warp but in a comforting sort of way. There are plenty of downsides though... luckily I'm less than an hour from civility so best of both worlds!

Wannalivewithcommonpeople · 31/12/2021 20:26

@idontshareprimula 🤣That comment just perfectly summed up my point, didn’t it

OP posts:
Twillow · 31/12/2021 20:30

Wasn't that just being young? Young people out in clubs and pubs today will reminisce about it in the future.

AliceAbsolum · 31/12/2021 20:31

You need to come to Benidorm op. Smoking, drinking, anti woke people EVERYWHERE.
They're out much later in the evening than I ever am! These people know how to drink

Luckyducky75 · 31/12/2021 20:50

Smoking in pubs was vile but I still miss it. I'm with you OP, bring on the mid life crisis xx

Wannalivewithcommonpeople · 31/12/2021 20:50

@Mumdiva99 ‘Even weed has gone to pot’ pun intended? 🤣

@Xmasiscancelledagain Am I old though? 43? Is that old? Am I having a mid life crisis in all seriousness

I love that smoking is banned in places like pubs, and so I don't have laryngitis for days after a night out.

You can't smoke inside or outside pubs anymore in Benidorm.
Brainwave89 · 31/12/2021 22:01

Love having a laugh and still do. Not sure I cannot now say anything I would want to say. Always hated smoking. Hugely bad for health, and you only had to see what it did to pub ceilings to realise this was nasty stuff. Do not miss it in pubs/clubs/restaurants at all.

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 31/12/2021 22:04

So long as you were one of the people oppressing others it was great. I always judge people who miss the times they could say what they wanted and do what they wanted. It just means you were a dick. Life is better for the many now and I hope it continues in the same direction.

Electriq · 31/12/2021 22:06

Smoking inside in any capacity is vile, so YABU about that.

DrCoconut · 31/12/2021 22:19

@Hospedia I agree. I'm 4 years older than you and I definitely think my age group are the last to be able to just be without the constant presence of devices, communication, social media etc. I can remember going for 10 days abroad on an exchange visit and it was just expected and the norm that you wouldn't have any contact with home for the duration and that you'd not see your photos till a few days after getting back. There was space to spread your wings and not be stifled by your DM constantly calling you at uni to make sure you're eating well, doing your work and not hanging round with unsuitable people 🤣. You could get up to mischief and know there'd never be proof Grin. The mid to late 90s had an air of optimism about it that is absent now and I'd love to go back in a time machine for a visit. I think it is at least partly nostalgia for lost youth though because I remember my grandma getting all misty eyed and saying similar about the 1940s while goodnight sweetheart was on.

Nope not old. I am older....a few years and not old. Only halfway through my life....

JannyWaps969 · 31/12/2021 22:25

Bacardi breezers or vodka and soda actually hun

Gin was definitely not in in the 90s !

MaxNormal · 31/12/2021 22:28

OP I'm sorry that you're randomly being accused of racism by people who, ironically, claim that arseholery is no longer tolerated.

Heartofglass12345 · 31/12/2021 22:29

I'm 37 and I feel ancient! I so miss being young, in my 20's and all I had to worry about was when I was next going out. I remember when they stopped smoking in nightclubs though and all you could smell instead was the toilets Grin

SammyScrounge · 31/12/2021 22:29

@MistressoftheDarkSide

The fear of cancellation can suddenly feel very real if you are a small business owner and use Social media for promotion....

I once did a very innocuous post on my business page about how I'd been procrastinating about some admin tasks, I put up a video from that chap who photographs mice in houses and used it as an example of my distraction vices, and also mentioned I'd been looking on Mumsnet.

Right off the bat I get a post from a very right on friend / customer - "Mumsnet - that well known hotbed of transphobia"...... after I'd stopped sweating I just replied with "But how cute are the Mice????" And it all went quiet.....

I also had a non binary customer / friend who tried to engage me on the subject of JK Rowling in the shop by saying they were going to throw some Harry Potter on the fire when they got home because it was cold..... I couldn't say a goddamn thing I wanted to, so showed them new stock - they then tried again, asking directly for my opinion, and all I could do was mumble that it was all very complicated and I didn't feel qualified to comment while hating myself .....

And this was about two years ago I think.....principles or livelihood ? Not such an easy choice sometimes.....

Horrible how she tried to trip you up. Hopefully she's not a friend any more.
@Waxonwaxoff0 Yes, it was, I obviously wouldn’t want that back..but, it’s what it represented in a way, knocking back drinks with pals in a proper pub or dancing in a club with a cigarette and no phones. Life is so very different now, so many rules and regulations and so so serious.
Yes it was much better.

This, well on social media, in real life, I don't know anyone who is that easily offended.
