To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

DD1 was given a gift bag by a very very affluent gentleman, who seems to have bought identical for everyone who works for anyone he knows.

Fortnums is the only posh chocolate

RoyalFamilyFan · 31/12/2021 12:02

So much of this is about branding and status. I find it hilarious that so many people will pay so much more money just because a seller warble on about their journey on their website and you cant buy the chocolates in the supermarket.

EleonorBronte · 31/12/2021 12:11

@madisonbridges

I'm not interested in WC or MC chocolates. What are the upper class chocolates? Because I think you'll find those are the ones I eat.
haha yes, every social group in the UK is desperate to conform to type, that is all i know.
EleonorBronte · 31/12/2021 12:15

I only eat chocolates dropped off by passing interplanetary craft. One can become weary of these rehashed peasant foods, half-arsedly marketed as artisanal. It's all just prole food at the end of the day, and i aspire to higher, less terrestrial delicacies to whet my appetite.

But don't let me dampen your tastes for class competitiveness. It's something to do, isn't it, something to cling on to when one's life has become devoid of all meaning?

My Italian ex and his friends would offer out a Ferrero rocher after a meal- it was just a little after dinner treat and didn’t really imply anything about your background.

RedPandaWanda · 31/12/2021 12:20
@RedPandaWanda I had similarly disappointing experiences with Godiva and Prestat.

Heartbreaking isn't it. Especially when you're young and really thought you were about to experience something special
I honestly thought it was going to be a ‘taste sensation’ lol! I don’t really know what to expect but £20 for 4 little chocolates, such a flat experience. It has put me off ever paying lots for chocolate again.

Rudeppl · 31/12/2021 12:26

Where does Lindt fit in? WC?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 31/12/2021 12:32

I have spend stupid amounts at pierre marcolini before now. I am quite happy with Lidl or Waitrose dark chocolate.

baggies · 31/12/2021 12:32

Lindt all the time. Brought up on Lindt chocolate coins , Lindt tree decorations and The Lindt bunnies at Easter. Child of the 60's

This is a funny thread.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Back in the 1970s when I went shopping on my own in Leeds city centre as a teenager, I'd always walk through Schofield's department store. They must have had a chocolate counter. I saw these once and bought one as a great treat for myself. Haven't had one for many years and no idea what they're like now. I always think of it as that elephant-shaped truffle thing, but Google tells me it's a Côte d'Or Bouchée.
These were a piece of heaven 😍
RoyalFamilyFan · 31/12/2021 12:44

@baggies the ALDI chocolate bunnies are just as nice and cheaper.

anilluminatednewyearforme · 31/12/2021 12:45

I don't know if it's posh, but Love Cocoa by James Cadbury is delicious!

I had a box of fresh chocolates from Rococo last year and they were amazing.

I love the bars from Hotel Chocolat too, but they're not posh! You also can't bear a good old M&S Belgian chocolate truffle. Yum.

I'll never forgive Kraft for ruining Cadbury. Dairy Milk in the old fashioned purple tinfoil was a thing of beauty, as was the 90s Cadbury's caramel in the foil backed paper wrapper. Poor imitations these days.

TheRealMrsJelly · 31/12/2021 12:46

I'm WC with WC tastes, love Galaxy Caramel, Fry's Turkish Delight or a Cadbury's Creme Egg. I like Green & Blacks, Thorntons and Lindt, so they may well fit in the WC bracket too.

I'd consider Godiva to be MC, but I don't like them, probably due to my WC tastes.

bendmeoverbackwards · 31/12/2021 12:54

Where can you buy Prestat?

Gonnagetgoing · 31/12/2021 12:59

@bendmeoverbackwards - well usual places like Harrods food halls, F&M but also Waitrose and John Lewis sell them.

No need to spend lots of money to be disappointed with Laderach. I discovered them about a year ago when I looked in their shop window and decided to go in. They are VERY generous with their free samples. They must be confident that their chocolate is so gorgeous (it is and I ended up spending about £20 on their Frishoggi.

RoyalFamilyFan · 31/12/2021 13:21

Prestat is a popular chocolate for flower companies to include in deliveries. They are nice enough and I have enjoyed them. But I have had better from LIDL.

LittleMissTake · 31/12/2021 13:27

Light hearted post.

Will my neighbours consider me a wannabe social climber if I hand the Charbonnel et Walkers round at my NYE soirée - lol?

Should I stick to the Quality Street tin?

100problems · 31/12/2021 13:32

I like Cadbury's Large Chocolate Buttons. You have to eat them as doubles though!

BoredZelda · 31/12/2021 14:03

So people have a need to show their obsession with class in order to demonstrate that they're middle class?

No, that the people most obsessed with class are the middle class, especially ones who have moved up to it.

I have Chabinnem et Walkers with my flowers that were delivered today. Should I keep them too myself lest people think I'm getting ideas above my station??
Hankunamatata · 31/12/2021 15:32

daytriptovulcan · 31/12/2021 15:36
