To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

Just been tucking into the M&S our big chocolate selection box, what does that make me? They are like what QS & Roses chocolates were back in the day.

I used to walk past Prestat and Fortnums on my way to and from work. Occasionally I'd have to get my chocolate fix. Fortnums are lovely but not a patch on Prestat (although I prefer macarons from Laudree over the road....)

Such a tough life.

QOD · 31/12/2021 17:02

Me too 😂

I have a box and mum has 3! We could make an almighty tower!!

StatesOfMatter · 31/12/2021 20:22

Went to London after Christmas for a day out and discovered Laderach which is up there in terms of flavour.

For me once upon a time Thorntons was aspirational and tasty, Hotel Chocolat started that way but I’ve gone off both in terms of taste.

For me chocolate is about the taste and how it feels in the mouth when eating it. Maybe my taste has changed or chocolate companies become bigger and compromise quality for scale but I do seem to prefer the pricier chocolates these days….

We have a brill independent chocolatier up here in Perthshire, who produces things like Madagascan chocolate flavoured with Scots pine or meadowsweet flowers.
She does boxes, thins and bars, and they are vastly superior to mass produced stuff.
Unfortunately also much more expensive, but great for treats or presents.

@daytriptovulcan

Godiva

Don't think it counts as posh if you can buy them in Home Bargains Grin

Hotyogahotchoc · 31/12/2021 21:27

I often give Charbonnel & Walker champagne truffles. Is that aspirational? Grin

I think they're delicious and I like to gift something a bit special that others may not buy for themselves.

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 31/12/2021 21:29

@Twinkleylight

There's a viennetta thread on AIBU I think where the OP had her mind blown by adding an after 8 to her viennetta. Lots of discussion on whether viennetta was in or out.

So out it's in I think.

Royce Chocolates from Japan are gorgeous.
Husband travels for work and always brings back a few boxes.
Beautiful stuff.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 31/12/2021 22:18

I stayed with some members of a European royal family once and they ate Laderach, so I think that would count as UC chocolate?

postcardfromme · 31/12/2021 23:40

❤️ Lindt- not sure which category this falls into as available every where and usually on offer. Still it's lovely choccy

Ninananna · 31/12/2021 23:47

Cadburys for me every time. If that makes me common then so be it.

Newyearoldyou · 01/01/2022 01:03

I'd say anything without bloody palm oil in it.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 01/01/2022 01:24

Have they stopped making Ritter yoghurt? I used to love it but haven't seen it in years.

uneffingbelievable · 01/01/2022 01:54

Sorry a doctor and nurse lower middle class - really!

Bendicks bittermints were the ultimate chocolate for my mother who was def UC.
Rarely saw my Dad eat chocolate - never acquired a taste for it during the war.

Turnitupto11 · 01/01/2022 02:02

It seems only expensive chocolates don't have palm oil in them. Sad Or can anyone recommend palm oil free chocolate that is readily available?
bintang · 01/01/2022 02:17

Ritter sport doesn't
Waitrose own brand bars (I think they're about £1.80 for 200g)
Toblerone
Divine

Tony's doesn't, but it's more expensive

Newyearoldyou · 01/01/2022 10:06

Trump I went to little independent choclate shop before Xmas and said is there any pallm oil, and I was sorry to ask as they probably found that insulting...

Turn out they did use pallm oil.

Audrey choclate supply fortnum I'm trying them next.
Fortum has banned it from all their products so that's good.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Back in the 1970s when I went shopping on my own in Leeds city centre as a teenager, I'd always walk through Schofield's department store. They must have had a chocolate counter. I saw these once and bought one as a great treat for myself. Haven't had one for many years and no idea what they're like now. I always think of it as that elephant-shaped truffle thing, but Google tells me it's a Côte d'Or Bouchée.
Oh wow, I once made the mistake of buying one of these on a whim in my local newsagents when I went to get milk and bread. From then on I was hooked. But I haven't seen them in years!
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/01/2022 10:59

Neither have I, @UserBot99, but to be fair I hadn't thought of them in years before this thread.

Tulipomania · 01/01/2022 11:35

I am currently munching my way through a very mediocre box of chocs of a brand I don't know that was given to us in an unsolicited hamper from DH work.

I keep eating in another one in the hope it will be better than the last but they never are. Does anyone else do this? I can't bring myself to chuck them out.

Turnitupto11 · 01/01/2022 11:53

Thanks. No waitrose nearby. I do like toblerone, and Tonys, but it is quite expensive. Ritter Sport is ok, I like the marzipan one and the cornflakes one, but very difficult to find here. Is Divine the one that co-op sell? They only have one dark flavour at the co-op here.
SilverOtter · 01/01/2022 12:27

I operate an equal opportunities chocolate-scoffing policy😋

Singleorigincoffee · 01/01/2022 12:30

Ritter sport bought in UK - not so posh
Ritter sport bought from Germany - poshish as selection and flavours are endless.

I love a ferroro Rocher at Christmas..it's not Christmas without it!

Back in the day we thought Black Magic and Terrys All Gold were the height of sophistication
