To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

MC chocolate:
Charbonnel & Walker
Neideregger
F&M own brand
Leonidas
Neuhaus

And Bendicks for after-dinner mints

Prestat boxes sold in supermarkets are not good.

RoyalFamilyFan · 31/12/2021 11:19

Why does the fact that Prestat is sold in supermarkets make it bad?

RoyalFamilyFan · 31/12/2021 11:20

@Thewiseoneincognito £100 on chocolate seems crazy to me. And I suspect on a blind taste test people could not tell the difference between those, and decent quality cheaper chocolate.

elbea · 31/12/2021 11:20

These threads are so mad, the old money billionaire I worked for still ate quality streets. He did have his own blend of hot chocolate made by a chocolatier but ate normal food too.

CharSiu · 31/12/2021 11:20

I had a dessert on a cruise that had the most expensive chocolate in the world as an ingredient.

The best chocolate I have ever had was from a chocolatier in France that DH bought back from one of his business trips.

There's a viennetta thread on AIBU I think where the OP had her mind blown by adding an after 8 to her viennetta. Lots of discussion on whether viennetta was in or out.

Alwayscheerful · 31/12/2021 11:21

F R do look fabulous but they are disappointing they taste awful, the nuts are like little bits of chopped wood.
I have suggested we no longer have them in the house.
Monty & Prestat are lovely
Green and blacks everyday chocolate and cooking
But no more FR here.

BiscuitLover3678 · 31/12/2021 11:22

Something like Leonidas. Artisan style.

InkyPinkyParlezVous · 31/12/2021 11:24

Good god. My present buying splurge in Hotel Chocolat (expensive for me) was "lower tier". Damn. They're all getting After Eights next year then.

malificent7 · 31/12/2021 11:28

I like Tony's. Middle class as vegan.

deadlanguage · 31/12/2021 11:32

@malificent7 alas most Tony’s is not vegan, only the almond, plain dark and candy cane ones are.

Karatema · 31/12/2021 11:32

[quote Sodullincomparison]Rocatti from Bologna.

I’ve just seen my mum share a small bag of treats from here with my daughter blithely unaware it costs £40.

A chocolate shop with no prices - lesson learnt!

They look very yummy though!

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 31/12/2021 11:35

I love Fortnums violet creams.
I buy one big box a year and hide them so I don't have to share them 😃

Thepineapplemystery · 31/12/2021 11:35

My very posh (grew up in an aristocratic family) great aunt likes galaxy Grin

I think doisy and dam is quite MC.

WonderfulYou · 31/12/2021 11:37

I was going to say Ferrero Rocher and After Eights we’re posh, you can tell which one I am Blush

I’ve honestly never heard of over 95% of the chocolates on here.

Although I’ve tried Thornton’s and another chocolate before (can’t remember the name) and I didn’t like either of them, which I why I continue to buy normal chocolates.

For Xmas I got a bar of Cadbury’s fruit & nut and a galaxy bar - and I think I’d take them over any box of chocolates any day.

In real life people will be really happy to get Hotel Chocolat chocolates.
QOD · 31/12/2021 11:39

i would find a ferrora rocher tower hilarious and think it was a piss take

and then eat it

TheHoptimist · 31/12/2021 11:46

F&M don’t have an own brand. They sell Audreys in their own boxes

I'm quite tempted to create one the next time I'm hosting anything. Not sure it would last though 😁 I bet you can probably buy a special stand and everything
CaptaNoctem · 31/12/2021 11:49

Nothing you can buy from a supermarket is posh - even if it is Waitrose or Booths.

TheHoptimist · 31/12/2021 11:50

@georgarina

The one posh person I know, as in Tatler levels of posh Grin gave us Monty Bojangles for Christmas
Are you staff?
LesLavandes · 31/12/2021 11:53

I think Bendicks have a royal warrant

Cuck00soup · 31/12/2021 11:53

Oh the MC chocolates are the ones loud parenting their little buttons in Waitrose & Booths.

The upper class don't care and the working class eat what they like.

BlondeDogLady · 31/12/2021 11:56

I honestly don't even know what class I would be called, let alone any chocolate brands!

How do you even class yourself? I'd love to know what I'm meant to be!
