SIL gone to panto when waiting for PCR result - oh yes she did!

anotherannoyngSIL · 30/12/2021 14:47

Name changed as I’ve been slated on here before for not allowing my SIL to do as she pleases.

Today I thought we’d made a positive turn as she has taken my older son and hers to the pantomime as I’ve got a broken leg (though she has made a big thing about helping out).

Unfortunately she’s just text me to say “BTW I’ve had a positive lateral and waiting on my PCR but decided to take the boys anyway as xxx (her son) was looking forward to it, I’m sure that’s fine”.

In which universe is that fine?? She’s risking not just my son, but the others she’s gone with and the whole audience!! She is very jealous if people do social things without her but surely there comes a time when sense is more important than FOMO?? I’m assuming she waited till she was there to tell me so I couldn’t do anything.

Husband says I’m being unreasonable for being annoyed as the rules aren’t clear cut and she hasn’t had the PCR test back.

AIBU for wanting to ban her as she’s so irresponsible and only really cares about herself?

Because if we dont all blindly follow the (made up) rules then the nhs will be over whelmed and society will collapse. Except it wont.

CalishataFolkart · 30/12/2021 19:45

@MrsBerthaRochester

Hospitals are struggling as they do EVERY winter flu season.
So why make it worse?
BonnesVacances · 30/12/2021 19:45

@MrsBerthaRochester

Is that the appalling posters who stayed home? Wore masks,washed hands,social distanced,home educated and got vaccinated? So the vast majority of folk in this country are "appalling"? I strongly disagree but I wont lower myself to personal attacks. Boris is a terrible pm but the best decision he made this year was not to cancel ny. Let people party.

No. It's the appalling posters who say now let me live, stuff the masks, stop making me stay at home when I have Covid so I don't spread it to anyone less fortunate. It's time to pretend Covid has gone. The elderly have had their day. Sod the people who will get long term illness. They didn't die, so that means they survived even if they are permanently disabled and can't work or have a life. I need to get my life back.

Them.

@sheikhmaraca

And if a child gets mow down and killed by a drunk driver you would expect that driver to be let off as the child and their parents took a risk crossing at green pedestrian lights so totally their fault they shouldnt have taken that risk right 🙄
Could be your child but never mind tap the drunk driver on the back and tell them stupid kid eh come for a beer on me.

Or would you expect the drunk driver to be in trouble?

Drink driving in inexcusable and so is going to a panto knowingnfull well you have covid and will liely spread to others

BoredatHome321 · 30/12/2021 19:49

@humdingle I'm not pro-restrictions at all. There's a difference between locking down the country and staying inside for 7-10 days if you have covid. The selfishness of some posters is truly sickening to read.

firefly123 · 30/12/2021 19:50

Oh no she didn't!!!

MrsBerthaRochester · 30/12/2021 19:53

People HAVE followed the rules. But the goal posts keep moving. Covid will soon be endemic. Should the vast majority of folk still stay at home then to protect the vulnerable?
Plus some people cannot afford to keep staying off work, lose income,dont have childcare. Its NOT as simple as oh just stay home if you test positive.

Tevion28 · 30/12/2021 19:57

Yes isolate whilst waiting for pcr result despite the fact they are taking a week to come back at the moment.

Tevion28 · 30/12/2021 20:01

WhatToDo1988 it's awful and it's buggered up a trip to the canaries on the 2nd of January for my sons 21st.

But are most people catching Covid that often? I've just caught it for the 2nd time but I don't know anyone else who has had it twice and lots haven't had it atall. Although it is getting milder it is still a nasty illness. We have all been sleeping most of the time since Christmas day. It has ruined my DC's holiday. We were with our friends for a couple of hours on 22nd they became ill the next day and we were sick by 25th. This is the first time this has happened after being around someone with Covid so it does seem to spread very quickly, anecdotally.
KittenCatcher · 30/12/2021 20:03

Has she told the test and trace and the theatre manager that she has tested positive on the pcr

That's terrible! I got my PCR results back in 24hrs about a week before Christmas to confirm a positive LFT. I don't think I'd bother with a PCR now if it's taking that long. ** - ( waits for the covid police to pile on and call me an idiot or worse )
UndertheCedartree · 30/12/2021 20:09

@WhatToDo1988

I used to be on your side until a few weeks go, now I've just snapped. I can't take it anymore. I've had both jabs and my booster. I wfh full time (hate it). Isolated when in contact with someone positive. Have taken more tests than I ever expected. Followed every rule. But this was all under the promise that it will all get better. It's not getting any better, our governments are nothing but corrupt incompetent arseholes and my life is wasting away. Why should the kids miss another event? For the sake of a virus that will likely cause minor or no symptoms? Fuck it.
Last time it only affected my 2 mildly/not atall. This time they have been sleeping most of the time since 25th. They were both really unwell. They are getting better but still fatigued. It has ruined their holiday. The thought of taking them to a panto and spreading it about to ruin lots of other DC's holidays - that would be so unfair.
MrsBerthaRochester · 30/12/2021 20:10

In Scotland you cannot get a lft or pcr test at the moment. So should everyone just assume they are positive and stay at home?

If they’re symptomatic, then yes. Obviously.
UndertheCedartree · 30/12/2021 20:16
@SheikhMaraca I agree with some of what you say about what is reasonable. I no longer think it is reasonable to impose restrictions on the entire population to deal with a mild illness with an almost 100% survival rate.

Yes, it is a mild illness in most cases regardless of what anyone says anecdotally. There will always be someone who can share a tragic story about a young life lost but that does not change the nature of the illness as experienced by almost everyone who catches it. We can't legislate to protect every individual against every potential danger. We just couldn't function at all like that.

Time to move on and find a way to live with it as an endemic virus - which I'm sure it will be at some point.
I agree that at one point we will be able to live with it like a 'cold'. I just don't think we are there yet. This new variant seems to be really hitting DC much more than before. While it definitely feels milder for me it is still a really nasty illness. I'm worried I'm not going to be well enough to take my DD to school next week.

UndertheCedartree · 30/12/2021 20:18

@MrsBerthaRochester

You can tell if you are ill. If so you should be staying home to rest and recover, anyway, imho.
liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 20:20

T h if current numbers are anything to go by there is probably hundreds of people in that theatre positive for covid. Something you have to accept if you send your child there or anywhere else including back to school next week. Those that haven't had it year are going to get it. Those who are CEV won't currently be going to the theatre. I can no longer get upset about this

CalishataFolkart · 30/12/2021 20:27

“Loads of people are asymptomatic - so should everyone just stay home?!”

No. But that is ALL THE MORE REASON that people who ARE symptomatic SHOULD. Otherwise they are adding to a problem that already exists.

Also, this variant is mild. What’s to say the next one will be? What’s to say the next one won’t be the one that kills you or your kids?

And the best way to produce more variants is to ditch the masks, give the vaccine the V’s and mingle like a motherflipper.

RonaLisa · 30/12/2021 20:42
@RonaLisa it was a pantomime so I'm assuming a majority of the audience are unvaccinated primary and junior age children... even if it's mild it will spread to their schools and social groups
If the majority of the audience is unvaccinated primary and junior age children, they will no doubt have been exposed already.

They should assume they are negative and get on with their lives.

In the West Midlands we could only book PCR's in Scotland yesterday.
MrsBerthaRochester · 30/12/2021 20:44

Yes thats correct. Once it infects everyone it will become a milder illness. So lets get on with that happening.
Dont worry about more variants. We shall just take booster number five. Or is it six? Or we can just get on with living with a mild cold like illness among us.

CalishataFolkart · 30/12/2021 20:44

Do you know why that runs counter to all the advice and guidance given by scientific bodies?
