Royal guard video kicking child in the way

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:23

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

If the parents are going to take their child to see a tourist attraction featuring soldiers on active service, i.e. using real guns with live ammunition (because what else would they be using if they are defending the queen/palace/houses of parliament/capital city etc!?) - then the parents need to keep their DCs under control, out of the way of the soldiers. The soldiers are doing a job, they are not fluffy bunnies just there for the LOLs, if there was a terrorist attack they would be expected to deal with it. People need to recognise that.

And the soldier didn't "kick the child" that got in the way. They did their best to step over/around them. Where were the bloody parents?

FFS.

OP - Do you live in the UK, or here visiting?

PurpleCarpets · 30/12/2021 00:12
@Adios2011 I think they probably last saved the queen about two days ago when a man broke into the palace with a crossbow to try and kill her…
The fact he got into the building does rather suggest that the men in fancy dress failed.

Fortunei · 30/12/2021 00:12

Watching the video in slow I have an impression that the kid deliberately obstructs the guard to test his actions.
If i were his parent I’d been ashamed because I didn’t bring him up to be a respectful person

DickMabutt73962 · 30/12/2021 00:13

@Sn0tnose

I’d be really interested to know how many of you who think the soldier did a terrible thing are from London or from a town where there is any sort of military presence? It was one of the first things we were taught as kids. Look where you’re going, get out the way of anyone marching towards you.
Well I'm one, I stated in the OP that I wasn't raised here and don't get the 'tradition' around it all. Personally I think it's all a bit OTT and unnecessary

I've lived here over a decade. I have very little interest in the drama and ceremony surrounding Royal life.

They are dressed in furry fucking hats.

Sure the boy should've stepped away but he's a little boy. What do they know? They sometimes do stupid things. The mum probably didn't realise it as it looks like it happened within seconds. It happens. Parents don't always see everything every second of everyday. Accidents do happen. That's what this looked like from their point of view.
He must have had the shock of his life with that barking to "MAKE WAY", then being tripped over.

As for them not allowed to stop or else they'll face disciplinary action...

It's a stupid tradition at this point. They should have a routine/conditions where they ARE allowed to stop, mark time/march on the spot till whatever it is has been dealt with. The sky won't fall, we're not at war. They so should and could stop if they didn't have arseholes in charge upholding silly archaic routines in the name of tradition.

Sn0tnose · 30/12/2021 00:16

Well said!

She's fine up in her 800+ bedroomed Palace with her pervert son!

Worse still, the video was taken at the Tower of London. Nowhere near the Queen or any member of the royal family. The last monarch to live there was Henry VII, around 1510

Are you suggesting we only bother having guards for buildings when the Queen is visiting? Or that we shouldn’t bother guarding the piles of egg sized diamonds and rubies that are stored only a few feet away?

CoedenNadolig · 30/12/2021 00:17

They are tasked with guarding "the royal residence" not "where the royal is currently resident" hence why they are at Buckingham palace, the tower of London and Windsor.

These can all be used as a residence,
The guard at Buckingham palace perform changing of the guard every day even when her majesty is in resident in Windsor.

Just because the standard isn't flying doesn't mean the guards get the day off. Those residence are still prime targets for an attack regardless of where her majesty is currently sleeping.

They guard the estate and infrastructure more than her majesty if that makes it a bit easier to understand. Obviously if she is in resident at Buckingham palace they are on higher alert.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 00:17

Not a stupid tradition.

There is a shout before they come out " make way for the queens guards" . The boy and his family have waited to see them.

antisocialsocialclub · 30/12/2021 00:17

@montysma1

They are dressed in furry fucking hats.
Which are part of their uniform Confused
unchienandalucia · 30/12/2021 00:17

Oh ffs. Unattended child walks out in front of armed marching soldiers and trips over. And it's the soldiers fault. I despair.

itsbecauseitstwixmas · 30/12/2021 00:18

"Worse still, the video was taken at the Tower of London. Nowhere near the Queen or any member of the royal family. The last monarch to live there was Henry VII, around 1510."

There are some priceless pieces of regalia at the Tower which warrant the Queens Guards.

The video was taken at the Tower of London. It was last used as a royal residence 500 years ago.

You’re taking your child into an environment where there are working soldiers with bloody great big guns. If you aren’t either keeping hold of your child or making sure your child knows how to behave in that environment then you need a massive kick up the arse and a reminder that the army are not Montessori nurses.

christmaskittenincoming · 30/12/2021 00:21

So much so you write a post on the internet about it. Lol lol

The video was taken at the Tower of London. It was last used as a royal residence 500 years ago.

It doesn't matter, it's still classed as a residence, if she wanted to move in tomorrow she could. The tower is also where the crown jewels are held, they need to be guarded.

When the queen passes away they will become the Kings guard. Guarding the King's assets and infrastructure. They aren't the monarchs body guards, they protect the monarchs assets.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 00:22

"The video was taken at the Tower of London. It was last used as a royal residence 500 years ago."

Yet still houses one of the most valuable collections in the world.

PrincessNutella · 30/12/2021 00:22

That doesn't look at all necessary.

Thepineapplemystery · 30/12/2021 00:22

People clearly don't understand that there are many scenarios in which people use their children to district officials, in some cases to then tackle an armed person and get their weapon. Imagine if that had happened?

ElizabethT8 · 30/12/2021 00:23

The Queen's Guard is not a tourist attraction to gawp at.
They are hard core. They give one shout of "MAKE WAY" and carry on.
The children should not have been roaming about there like that and the parents should have hold of their hands. There are plenty of warnings there yet people still let their children roam.
