Royal guard video kicking child in the way

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

But he walks into him, and it honestly doesn't appear to me that it's due to him not having time to react. The child was standing there a few paces before he got to him, and still he walked right through and over him

The soldier shouted at him to get out of the way. The kid and his parents didn’t listen. I’m amazed at the amount of people who think that working soldiers should slow down and move out of the way of tourists who are bimbling along in their own little worlds. If you don’t understand that you need to be ready to get out of a soldier’s way when they come marching towards you, then stick to Madame Tussaud’s.

AnotherMansCause · 29/12/2021 23:50

Compare and contrast with this recent case in the USA. In which the young victim was doing nothing more offensive than trying on a dress in a changing room.

Franklin12 · 29/12/2021 23:51

Parents to blame. These guards have loaded guns!

Coronawireless · 29/12/2021 23:51

The child didn’t run in front of them, he was standing there.
For those who say the parent should have moved the child…well, they didn’t move him…should the child be punished for that?
It is a tourist area and there were several other children standing around, just like they boy was. If the area wasn’t safe for children they shouldn’t have been there.
Disgusting behaviour by the guard.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2021 23:51

Have you seen how far the bearskin comes down over their eyes OP?

It's a miracle he saw him at all.

@PurpleCarpets

The Queens Guard aren’t a tourist attraction. They’re professional soldiers who are doing their duty.

This is somewhat disingenuous. They absolutely are a tourist attraction. They wear fancy dress, and they perform strange rituals. If they want to be treated as serious soldiers by the public I'd suggest they dress down and cut out the romantic bits.

They are not a tourist attraction. They are in a uniform not fancy dress.

They do not perform "rituals" they are changing the guard, yes it's done in a ceremonial and drill way, but that's how they do it. That's the drill.

The Queen's guards are just that, the Queen's guard. They carry a loaded rifle and have a bayonet to attach if need be.

Their purpose is to guard the residence always has been.

Being a guard isn't a easy soldiering job. It's heavy on drill and dress. They spend hours just polishing stuff and cleaning weapons. But they are skilled, and they also have to out up with people fucking about when they are simply just trying to do their job with a smart phone everywhere.

When the guard shouts "clear the way" guess what....clear the way.

This one did make me chuckle!

@GinandGobbledegook

But he didn't even look back to check they were OK. Surely they are human and have some compassion?
Um Confused do you know what soldiers do for work?

If they can’t see, they shouldn’t be carrying loaded guns in a tourist area with young children wandering about. Some bizarre responses here.

😂

And is a prime example of "even if you cordon the area, some twat will get in the way"

LegoNinjago · 29/12/2021 23:55

HunterGatherer
As for defending the Queen, surely she was safely tucked up in Windsor Castle baby sitting Prince Andrew?
I think it stinks (and I have family serving in the army). If you swapped that uniform for a police officers there would be absolute outrage.

This x100

My issue is that it's a child. Adults know better. But I can see a lot people disagree with me

The parents are absolutely to blame here. The royal guards have done nothing wrong.

Coronawireless · 29/12/2021 23:57

A certain type of person takes on this “guard” role it would seem.

Then they shouldn't be carrying loaded guns if their vision is so impaired

Anecdotal but when I was about 8, I was riding at Windsor horse show. I had competed in the First Ridden, and was all done for the day. I was starving and looking forward to an ice cream before heading home.

I was walking along, eating my ice cream, minding my own, when a large man roughly pushed me out the way, knocking my ice cream out my hand

When I turned round i saw the Queen walking along flanked by her security. I looked at her, and she looked square at me and said nothing. I've never forgiven her....

ChickenGotLegs · 29/12/2021 23:58

@TrashyPanda

Try crossing a road during an Orange March.

Makes that look a kiss on the cheek!

I agree the parents should have kept their kid out of the way.

Coming from Glasgow I totally agree with this 😆
WorraLiberty · 29/12/2021 23:58

@Coronawireless but they do all the same.

Therefore you can't blame the bloke for tripping over a kid in his way.

Yes this is my point. All the talking about 'tourists'; this is a child, tourist has nothing to do with it. And unless they were on their way to attend to an emergency at the palace (or whatever it is they do) then it's ridiculous

notacooldad · 29/12/2021 23:59

I was expecting it to be an over reaction, but he should have swerved or stopped
That was shocking
Absolutely not.
How would you know ( if you were the soilder) if a child was being used as a distraction to cause harm or deliberate distruction) They are trained to hold their nerve
They are working , they are not there for a bit of fun or a photo opportunity.

Apparently the soldier went back and checked on the lad and was assured he was fine

That doesn't make for a good video to stoke up horror about how dreadful the guards are though does it
Exactly! People just hyping up shit. The parents are entirely at fault. Yes, it's easy to get distracted and most parents including me have been at some point but you really do need to be aware of your surroundings and what's going on.

FrippEnos · 30/12/2021 00:00

DickMabutt73962

In this case the guard would have called out
"make way for the queens guard"

BashfulClam · 30/12/2021 00:00

‘Make way for the queens guard’ they are serving soldier on patrol with precision timed movements that they will not deviate from. Imagine that child was a distraction technique from Doris wishing to cause harm. They are not to be distracted and if you get too close they will raise their weapon. There Id footage of a stupid tourist walking next to one putting his arm round him. He soon retreated when the rifle was lifted and an instruction to move was screamed in his face. These are highly trained soldiers first and foremost.

MrsBungle · 30/12/2021 00:01

It looks to me like the soldier tries to avoid the child but trips over him. He certainly didn’t kick him. It’s an accident.

antisocialsocialclub · 30/12/2021 00:01

Fucking hell, that’s their uniform 🤣🤣🤣

Sn0tnose · 30/12/2021 00:01

The tourists are going into their world, not the other way around. It’s the Tower ffs, with working soldiers. It’s not Peppa Pig world. It’s down to the parents to tell their kids that there are soldiers there, they have guns that fire real bullets and if they come marching towards you, then you get out the way.
