Royal guard video kicking child in the way

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

This soldier is wearing a massive uniform and carrying a heavy loaded weapon. He managed to step over the child who shouldn't have been there. These soldiers work long and exhausting shifts, they're not just a photo opportunity.
I've a young relative in the Blues and Royals who was all over social media a while back after being thrown from their horse. They were thrown off in full regalia whilst being filmed from all angles. His weight and horse riding ability were criticised really unfairly and for a teenager it was a terrible experience.

The kid wasn't kicked at all.

And if you slow the video down, you can see the guard tried hard to side step when he noticed the child at the very last second, but it was too late.

HunterGatherer As for defending the Queen, surely she was safely tucked up in Windsor Castle baby sitting Prince Andrew? I think it stinks (and I have family serving in the army). If you swapped that uniform for a police officers there would be absolute outrage.

A policeman isn't the same as a soldier, but I wouldn't encourage getting in their way either. Especially in the states.

They are properly armed soldiers who are highly trained in weaponry and hand to hand combat.

If they didn't wear the stupid uniforms and bear skins and do their pointless marches people wouldn't flock to see them, but of course its all for tourism! When have they actually saved the queen?? She's fine up in her 800+ bedroomed Palace with her pervert son! Think it's time they got rid of all this pompous traditional rubbish! Dress them as proper modern soldiers if they want people to take them seriously

Didn't they just catch an armed intruder at one of the Queen's residences this week? The guards don't deviate because it's their job to not deviate.

I’m not seeing a problem. They gave him a clear warning and he continued to stand in their way, looking directly at them. If two armed soldiers are doing a military march towards you at speed and tell you to move, you do it. Another child makes sure she isn’t blocking their path.

They don’t move out of the way for civilians. Yes, it’s a child and nobody wants to see a child upset but imagine if the queen’s guards moved for nobody but children. You’ve heard of child suicide bombers being used by terrorists, surely? Yes, it sounds ridiculous but these are soldiers tasked with protecting a monarch outside her residency.

They don’t step on him at all and the nearest soldier is clearly being careful to not touch him. He should be thankful he just fell over and wasn’t trampled on by one of her cavalry!

I mean just teach your kids to stay out the way of them? I get they were visiting but surly they knew where they were

I feel sorry for the child, it must have been a shock, but I do find that many children just expect adults to walk around them, and that their parents make zero effort to stop them bumping into people.

This child came a cropper because of the expectation that adults will always make space for you.

This is somewhat disingenuous. They absolutely are a tourist attraction. They wear fancy dress, and they perform strange rituals. If they want to be treated as serious soldiers by the public I'd suggest they dress down and cut out the romantic bits.

Worse still, the video was taken at the Tower of London. Nowhere near the Queen or any member of the royal family. The last monarch to live there was Henry VII, around 1510.

I’d be really interested to know how many of you who think the soldier did a terrible thing are from London or from a town where there is any sort of military presence? It was one of the first things we were taught as kids. Look where you’re going, get out the way of anyone marching towards you.
