Royal guard video kicking child in the way

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:23

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

He didn't kick the child, he tried to step over him. They've now released a statement and confirmed that the soldier himself went back to check on the child and the family assured him all was well.

Plus, I'm not a fan of the Queen, but they are there to protect her. An attempt on her life was made very recently, and unfortunately I doubt it'll be the last. They can't afford to be distracted.

elelel · 29/12/2021 23:36

I just can't think of a scenario outside of threat to life that would require an adult man to kick a child out of the way.

That's not what happened.

PriamFarrl · 29/12/2021 23:36

I saw it on Reddit and someone who said that he had been a Queen’s Guard posted.
He said that they are not allowed to break step. They will shout at someone in their way to get them to move but they will be seriously punished if they break step.
It is a serious job and not just for tourists.

Akire · 29/12/2021 23:37

They don’t kick him they knock him over. It’s fair to assume the child would move out of their way it’s not a tiny toddler they look what 5/6. Enough not to be holding a parents hand by the side of the road/path. Plus they are soldiers on patrol under orders. They can’t stop and ask parents to come and get him. It’s same on parade when they fall smack on their faces when feel faint they be on a charge doing anything else.

Just because it looks pretty or Facebook worthy doesn’t mean it’s not a military manoeuvre that you just so happens you can watch.

TonytheDog · 29/12/2021 23:37

Your thread title is disingenuous. The Royal Guard didn't kick a child.

They are soldiers. They are armed. He adjusted his pace so as not to hurt the child. He did t kick him.

Don't post a thread with a 'click bait' title.

Bloodypunkrockers · 29/12/2021 23:38

They're soldiers on duty. It playground supervisors

Totally the parents fault

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:39

@saraclara

They didn't kick him, they collided with him as he was in the way and then stepped over him in order to avoid stepping on him.

That. The headline is entirely overblown. The kid wasn't trampled. The closest description would be to say he was tripped over.

This suggests that the child quickly appeared and tripped him up. I've seen a video from another angle and I'll attach the shot, the child is stationary in the spot and the guard just walks into him.

@WorraLiberty

The kid wasn't kicked at all.

And if you slow the video down, you can see the guard tried hard to side step when he noticed the child at the very last second, but it was too late.

This. I'm surprised people are seeing it so differently? I can only assume the headline has made them view the footage with a preconceived idea of what happens rather than them looking at it objectively?
DesdemonaDryEyes · 29/12/2021 23:40

🙄

Theunamedcat · 29/12/2021 23:41

Everyone knows this is what happens some people have deliberately walked in front of them to get knocked over because they are idiots

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:41

He just walks over him.

Ok on watching it several times more and from other angles it isn't 'kicked' as I previously thought.

But he walks into him, and it honestly doesn't appear to me that it's due to him not having time to react. The child was standing there a few paces before he got to him, and still he walked right through and over him.

ComDummings · 29/12/2021 23:42

It looks like the guard is trying to step over the child. The parents are at fault, these are soldiers on duty for security carrying loaded weapons. It’s not that difficult to keep out of the way.

I totally understand idiot adults doing it with that repercussion. Not a child.

Well, it's the parents fault then.

They're soldiers on duty, not babysitters.

PurpleCarpets · 29/12/2021 23:43

The Queens Guard aren’t a tourist attraction. They’re professional soldiers who are doing their duty.

This is somewhat disingenuous. They absolutely are a tourist attraction. They wear fancy dress, and they perform strange rituals. If they want to be treated as serious soldiers by the public I'd suggest they dress down and cut out the romantic bits.

rarge · 29/12/2021 23:44

@WheelOnTheBus

The soldier doesn’t kick the child out of his way. The child stands in his way and is knocked over. The fact that the child was in their way to be knocked over is the fault of the parents.

100%. Parent just standing there, clear out of the way and let's boy get trampled, expecting the others to stop rather than just tell him to move

He's not a baby he looks about 7-9, he won't be injured, just a bit like WTF.

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:44

Everyone knows this is what happens

I've lived here over a decade and don't know this, although I'd be standing on the sides. But again, I'm not a child.

As the guards marched, one of them appeared to shout out a warning a split-second before colliding with the child, stepping over him, and then carrying on marching

From your link.

No kicking.

Warning, colliding and stepping over, not so goady though, are they?

WhoWants2Know · 29/12/2021 23:45

@GinandGobbledegook

But he didn't even look back to check they were OK. Surely they are human and have some compassion?
Well, no. He's not allowed to look back. His job is to March in step and if he missteps then he faces disciplinary action.
WheelOnTheBus · 29/12/2021 23:45

@HunterGatherer

If a police officer has accidentally knocked over a child, who was uninjured, in the course of their duty, there would’ve been an “outrage”? Seriously?

MarshmallowFondant · 29/12/2021 23:45

@Guiltypleasures001

Apparently the soldier went back and checked on the lad and was assured he was fine
That doesn't make for a good video to stoke up horror about how dreadful the guards are though does it.
Mouseonmychair · 29/12/2021 23:45

They are working soldiers with loaded weapons the parents are stupid for allowing it to happen. And the child has learned an important lesson.

Scrooge89 · 29/12/2021 23:45

Haven’t watched the video but I’ve seen the Queen’s Guard and they shout very very loudly ‘make way for the queen’s guard’ so people watching know what they’re doing.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 29/12/2021 23:46

He just walks over him.

Eh?! He very clearly (to me) tries to step over him without stepping on him but it isn't possible to take a stride big enough to do so. Especially mid walk, as a reflex.

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:49

I couldn't make out what the guard was shouting 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I've said that while I realise it wasn't a kick after seeing the video from another angle, the child was standing there long enough for a side step.
