Royal guard video kicking child in the way

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

This is breathtakingly ignorant to the point of being offensive

Isn’t it just?

ILoveYou3000 · 30/12/2021 12:48

So in the unlikely event of spotting a terrorist while you march around staring straight ahead and you have to take action, you might run the risk of causing literal chaos in the ranks?

and if deviating from the route of the march and tackling the terrorist is going to cause immediate chaos in the ranks, how useful are the Guards, realistically?

Seriously? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'd explain but nah. Your posts are actually quite entertaining now in how ridiculous they are.

summertimerolls · 30/12/2021 12:49

@mathanxiety

Visitors are advised to be respectful and stand clear when the guards are marching and performing their official duties.

Visitors who come from civilised countries have no warning whatsoever from the website that the Guards will be marching through crowds of people on unmarked routes, or that they are prepared and willing to march straight into people inadvertently in their way, bellowing as they approach.

When they say "stand clear of the doors" on the tube, what do you think that means? It means if you don't stand clear the doors will shut on you. I'd say this is just as clear.
mathanxiety · 30/12/2021 12:50

It's as clear as mud on the website.

A great many people here have difficulty putting themselves in others' shoes.

Take a look at YouTube, if you find it hard to imagine how surprising and unexpected the marching through crowded spaces is, with no warning from the website that they will be mowed down if they don't leap out of the way.

@mathanxiety

Why are the people unsuspecting though? Surely that what they are there to see

They're there to see the Crown Jewels or the well advertised interactive exhibits, or the nice, tame Beefeaters. There is nothing in the website to give tourists any clue that the Guards are not quaint, romantic characters who inhabit the quirky British time warp, that they leave their posts (!) - they don't just stand there all day every day in a state akin to catatonia - and they march into people who are not fast enough on their feet.

@mathanxiety it’s right on the Tower of London visitor information …. here you go ….

How is "stand clear" confusing to you?

Can you tell us some of those civilised countries? As opposed to the UK which is uncivilised?
JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 12:52

It's clear on the website.

It's clear when at the tower.

Warnings are given.

Kid was at fault.

Parents too

You are barmy and your anti British sentiment shows through.

The website says to stand clear. Do you need an entire description of why and what will happen if you don't before you'll do as you're told?
JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 12:53

"Visitors who come from civilised countries".

We have armed guards at certain public places.

The US has school shootings and bankrupts people for health care.

Which one is civilised eh?

NewYearNewBeer · 30/12/2021 12:54

Tiannamon Square, the Holocaust, the Troubles.

Some people might feel better for queitly backing out of this thread and calming down.

A person getting knocked over, even if deliberately, is not deserving of all this agro - and especially not deserving of dragging global atrocities into.

WonderfulYou · 30/12/2021 12:54

The family themselves have said the guard came back. Just because it wasn't necessarily filmed doesn't mean they are lying. I mean, why would they?

A few people said it wasn’t the full video which is why I assumed it was filmed. I didn’t say they were lying.

Do you have a link to where the family said the guard came back?

I think what this is proving is that some people lack common sense. The videos are on YouTube because they are things that don't happen all time. The huge majority of people there are vigilant and get out the way in good time. Those videos don't get posted though because they are the norm. Just like most people understand from the website that stand clear means get out the way

You're just embarassing now, it's very clear on the website, unless you are an absolute idiot, which tbf I think you maybe. If someone tells you to stand clear, this means you stand clear. Standing clear means not in the way just in case you didn't realise it.
mathanxiety · 30/12/2021 12:54

It is absolutely not stated that the Guards march on unmarked routes, straight through crowds, not necessarily in large formations, and that this requires you to have eyes in the back of your head and to hold hands with your children at all times.

The Tube is a different kettle of fish altogether. The doors are stuck on the train exactly where you expect them to be, not approaching you from any random angle barking orders far too late.

Wow someone disagrees with what one person connected to the royal family does and they’re call anti-British!

MadameMinimes · 30/12/2021 12:55

If you watch short clip on the internet then you might get the impression that people can be caught unawares. If you watch a full video of the changing of the guard or a March from start to finish, then you’ll see that there is lots of warning. The situation that you have imagined in your head where they just arrived and were then suddenly mowed down by a soldier that they weren’t expecting to be there is not how it happened. As people have said, repeatedly, people are loudly warned that the soldiers are coming, told to keep out of the way and told loudly that they are armed and will not stop. Just one of many examples that you can find online if you search. Anyone who has visited the tower will also tell you this.

WonderfulYou · 30/12/2021 12:56

TrashyPanda · 30/12/2021 12:57

Visitors who come from civilised countries

What about those who come from uncivilised countries where anyone can carry a gun? And where you can buy a gun in a supermarket?

Is Poland uncivilised cos of their military ritual in Warsaw?

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 12:58

That was a quote.

But this is your problem for taking the instruction to "stand clear" as conditional on whether mathanxiety alone thinks it's necessary. The guards don't appear from nowhere, they're big loud men who don't hover silently above the ground.

And all parents should be holding the hand of a small child in a crowded public place.

mathanxiety · 30/12/2021 12:59

Resorting to ad hominem attacks is often a sign that you have reread what you thought was the clincher but realised you have a shit argument on your hands, @anon12345678901.

You can check the videos for yourself showing startled tourists with their backs turned to the advancing Guards not knowing what's going on, or what way to turn. Older people quite often.

The victim in this case was a young child, and quite frankly, if people here are heartless enough to blame anyone but the Guard who could see someone was directly in front of him but chose to march on, I'm happy not to have plans to visit the UK again any time soon. .

loislovesstewie · 30/12/2021 13:00

FFS !!! I wonder how some people have managed to grow up without constant warnings! You have driven me to swearing and that is saying something !
Don't go to the countryside; you might get trampled by a cow, or fall into a ditch or get your shoes dirty, or lots of other things.
Don't ride a bike you might fall off.
Don't cross the road.
Don't make a hot drink.
In fact stay in bed just in case!
Of course, you might just use common-sense.
