To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

The Guardian didn't include JKs Birthday in their Birthday column but included some minor celeberties, so they are quite petty.

@clavinova

I don't quite understand how comments made after the referendum could have influenced it, as was the original post.

So you've got one post. I have several more prior to the referendum of the Tories denigrating working people.

lonelyapple · 28/12/2021 20:57

How liberal, open-minded and mature of them. Obviously they value diversity of opinion (as long as it's the correct opinion) Confused.

Clavinova · 28/12/2021 20:58

Neil Cunningham

I meant Alex Cunningham of course.

@lonelyapple

See those straws, they are there for clutching at.

The original post didn't mention Brexit.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 21:07

@Clavinova

Sorry. It did.

MrsWooster Mole is on the case: twitter.com/moleatthedoor/status/1475849571263729673?s=21 That's not genuine, is it? It's littered with typos!

It’s a parody though, in fairness, for the Grauniad the typos aren’t the giveaway that they might otherwise be…

Sorry. It did.

whachatalkinaboutwillis
Incredibly disrespectful to their readership. They remind of those Labour MPs who denounce working class people as thick racists rather than listen to valid concerns about empolyment and housing. The left is handing the country to the likes of Boris f...g Johnson when they will not listen. Appalling.

JohnHuffam1812
This old tripe again? Got examples?

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 21:14

Oh dear the nuance of that you really missed.

Even then Boris was elected in 2019, so 2020 quotes aren't involved.

But the issue to do with employment and housing are down to immigration and what was discussed during the referendum.

Oh dear.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 28/12/2021 21:21

This thread is a scary example of how fake news can spread so easily. It’s already been explained that there was no Guardian poll which was shut down to ‘cancel’ JK Rowling.

There was no poll but still the pitchforks and outrage continues. I bet JK Rowling wishes she’d kept her views to herself. Many of her ‘supporters’ are as insane as her detractors.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 28/12/2021 21:33

The lack of a ‘person of the year’ poll doesnt mean that the guardian is not a joke when it comes to JKR

Clavinova · 28/12/2021 21:38

Oh dear -

Feb 2020
Lisa Nandy criticises Labour for disowning voters with immigration ‘concerns’ and labelling them ‘irrational or racist.’

inews.co.uk/news/uk/lisa-nandy-concerns-immigration-racist-irrational-401007

Oh dear again -

May 2016

Pat Glass, Labour’s shadow Europe minister, has apologised after being caught on microphone calling a voter in Derbyshire a “horrible racist”.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 21:42

Again from 2020, going back to the quote which you take as the origin.

AFTER brext and AFTER Johnson elected.

Keep it up, you're amusing.

Oh and Pat Glass was right, he was a racist.

2nd one.

BigHeartyTruffle · 28/12/2021 21:47

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer you may think that, fortunately you have the choice not to read it as a result. Others will disagree and choose to continue reading it.

As @JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil, the real issue with this thread is it demonstrates how fast fake news spreads and how people latch on to stories that support their views without any proper research or fact checking to validate them. Same thing has happened with Covid and look where that has got us.

Figmentofmyimagination · 28/12/2021 21:48

I remember when Alan Rusbridger gave his own daughter, Bella Mckie, a regular column on the comment page - different surname of course. Anyone who commented on it was banned.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 28/12/2021 21:52

Well yes…quite obviously, didnt think I needed to clarify that

But my point was more that even if you know it wasnt a poll you could still vote YANBU because you think that the guardian is a joke when it comes to the one particular subject of JKR (obviously others can think it’s permanently a joke…or not a joke in the slightest)

Clavinova · 28/12/2021 21:58

JohnHuffam1812

No - I'm going to watch a film.

Again from 2020

So, it's OK for Labour MPs to call voters 'racist' after Brexit? Or perhaps Lisa Nandy is talking nonsense again? She's not in Keir Starmer's Shadow Cabinet is she? Oh dear - she is.

yellowtwo · 28/12/2021 22:00

I bet JK Rowling wishes she’d kept her views to herself. not likely given she is still speaking up about these issues.

Porfre · 28/12/2021 22:06

@yellowtwo

Exactly she did backtrack once and say she'd accidentally liked a tweet or something. But in the end she had to stand up for what she felt was right no matter what the backlash was.

She had the chance to back out but she didnt.

Wineandroses3 · 28/12/2021 22:07

The Guardian- does not surprise me one bit.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 22:11

Agree this
It's the reason I always ask for sources on here when people say stuff as fact, or quote figures seemingly out of thin air again with no context or anything.
Some just expect you to believe and not question anything.

Firesidefox · 28/12/2021 23:19

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Happy to accept I was mistaken when I thought I was voting in a poll. I went onto The Guardian website and answered a question there which said something like 'Who's your Person of the Year?' and then a section on the lines of 'What are your reasons?' From the wording of everything I saw, I assumed they would publish the names of the most popular candidates and some of the reasons people mentioned. But now I know that's not a poll, that's just a bit of vox pop. Okaaaaaaaaaay...........
Yeah me too @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

TBF, none of the UK newspapers are fans of diversity. The Times, Sun and Mail havent changed much from their misogynist, right wing past either.Xmas Hmm

Indeed I think they've all become worse since media moved online. Bit by bit they've retreated into echo chambers that encourage division, not discussion or knowledge.
