I’m not sure this is right

Probably just a good opportunity to sit and talk him through the process. We looked at behind the scenes of Nightmare before Christmas and the whole puppetry aspect of MoMo to get over this kind of thing when it came up for my kid. Seemed to take any fear out of it.

Doveyouknow · 27/12/2021 13:14

It's not within ofcom's remit. It might be within the ASA's remit but probably not if it was within an app

NeverForgetYourDreams · 27/12/2021 13:15

@SoniaFouler

From the POV of a child I think it’s kind of scary. He was really shook up about it and refused to play any more.
That's good. He can go play with some age appropriate toys then and not sit gaming at 6.....
ItsMsAtomicBobToYou · 27/12/2021 13:18

You need to put parental restrictions on your phone if you're going to hand it over to a child.

The app rating is for the content of the app - that it's suitable for children over the age of four. You need to put the content restrictions on under screen time to ensure they don't access inappropriate content.

In saying that I'm not sure that as would even be filtered out by the content restrictions, because it's a plasticine figure.

Barbie222 · 27/12/2021 13:21

This is on you and your family. You haven't a leg to stand on with a complaint, because you agreed to the ads when you downloaded the free version. Child in the same room as you on their device, keep an ear out, and pay for ad free versions whenever you are able to. You need to step up.

Fireatseaparks · 27/12/2021 13:24

that kid is going to get ripped to shreds in school if he's so scared of that he won't pay the game anymore

SoniaFouler · 27/12/2021 13:25

Apparently there isn’t an ad free version

I don’t think he’s allowed to play it at school

So many things I'd love to say that have already been covered. Personally that was a real anticlimax. You made it sound like a horror movie, when in reality it was cartoon and quite frankly I'd have found that hilarious at 13! Gurn up

seeseesee · 27/12/2021 13:28

I think there are two things here, though - parents need to constantly supervise dc online and not just rely on the age limits shown, yes, but also actually I think the OP and everyone else should complain, because the links and the ads are in fact irresponsible, it could be done a lot better, and the more people who complain the better

So i wouldn't say "you haven't a leg to stand on" or yabu, I'd say be more careful in future with your dc, you need to supervise, but yes go ahead and complain as loudly as you like

And there’s a lot worse than that he could accidentally find his way to in the internet. You should really be on the same room, checking up on him all the time at that age.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 27/12/2021 13:30

Yes but as has been pointed out many many time she shouldn't have been playing the game unsupervised as the terms and conditions say users should be 13 or older.

Okay but it’s advertised from being 4+. Several people have posted screenshots and you can see it on the App Store for yourself. There is no reason to believe that the giant “4+” on the main page of the game by the download button actually means 13+

Sorry OP but if you mean the windy bit near the beginning where the face changes to a skeleton then you're being ridiculous. There's nothing remotely scary about that at all.

Have you complained yet OP? Do come back and tell us how it goes.

ffscovid · 27/12/2021 13:35

Sounds typical of a dodgy (?free) app. Amazon themselves won't have created the app and placed it there. Some advertiser would've made it to be deliberately shocking to catch your attention and chose to advertise Amazon as nearly everyone shops there. They will earn a commission from anything purchased from clicking the advert, even if not immediately there is a good chance that you'll shop on Amazon soonish, giving them the commission.

It is why children - especially very young ones - should only use apps from obviously safe creators (CBBC, Lego etc).

OP you seem to be ignoring the posts that have explained this, like the one from @idontgetpaidenoughforthis on the first page. Here is is again, perhaps this time you'll read it as they've taken the time to explain it for you.

The rating is for the app itself NOT the advertising content, which, as others have repeatedly posted, comes under the terms of service.

Yes it says 4+ on the app store but that's not the company who made the games fault. The company themselves say 13+. If the parents don't care about actually checking and him accessing the Internet unsupervised they can hardly moan when he sees something he finds inappropriate.

Neither you or his parents can complain he saw the advert whne he wasn't being properly supervised.

To be honest if I were them I'd just be glad it was this advert and not something much worse.

sst1234 · 27/12/2021 13:39

This is a very bizarre thread. Possibly one of the more subtle wind ups. Because it’s still going 8 pages in. OPs responses are getting a little weird too.

FortunesFave · 27/12/2021 13:40

OP it's a bit weird...and it's loud and trippy...so I can see a 6 year old might be freaked out but it's no more scary than the stuff I watched as a kid in the 1970s and 80s.

MabelsApron · 27/12/2021 13:40

OP, you consistently ignore everyone saying that the game may be suitable for 4+ but the adverts are 13+. Angry Birds Reloaded is an ad-free version of the game.

Ultimately if your DN’s parents insist that he be allowed to play internet games then you all need to be much more savvy about what he’s accessing - it’s not good enough to plead ignorance and then complain to various agencies afterwards. This goes double for parents of sensitive children, who have to be even more aware of ratings, how apps work, and how to find the information you need to assess appropriateness.

It’s not like the cinema where they do all the work for you - you need to do it, or the children have to wait until they’re older to play internet games.

SergeiL · 27/12/2021 13:41

But but but

Your delicate 6 year old is playing a game which involves catapulting birds to kill stuff so…
