I’m not sure this is right

I don’t think there is anything scary about that

Bagamoyo1 · 27/12/2021 12:29

I think it’s sad that children now have so much screen time that parents are desensitised to screen images that they themselves would have found frightening in the past. Surely we all remember hiding behind the settee during episodes of Dr Who, with the most amateur special effects and unscary baddies?
Both my kids at age 6 would have found that advert scary. It’s fast, bright, the images are ugly, and then plasticine face turns into a skull. That’s way more disturbing that someone wearing a cyberman hat made of tin foil!

OP I’d much rather have a young child who was scared of such things, than a tough kid who didn’t bat an eyelid at those images.
6 years old is very young. What a pity so many posters seem to have forgotten that.

I’m guessing you’re an adult?
KaptainKaveman · 27/12/2021 12:30

Haha I needed a good laugh 😃.

OP if you CBA to supervise your 6 year old while he's using devices to access age- inappropriate games then this is what happens. Duh. Maybe get him some books and, y'know, read to him? If you can be bothered.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 27/12/2021 12:32

My then three year old was playing on a kid’s game on DH’s phone and a prime advert came up for The tv show vikings. It scared the living Jesus out of him and I hadn’t realised adverts weren’t filtered by age range.

It was something we lived and learnt. Definitely report to ofcom if it makes you more comfortable though.

@SoniaFouler

Did nobody see the screenshot *@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams* posted?

If an app says suitable from 4 that’s to be expected, not suitable from 4 but really, 13 Confused

You don't seem to reading people's comments. The app might be suitable for 4+ but the advertising is suitable for 13+.

A 6 year old should not have unsupervised access to the internet (and yes "the internet" includes ads on apps). Please take this as a wakeup call that you need to make yourself more internet savvy and protect your child. It will only get worse and he will potentially be exposed to more unsuitable material as he gets older. Best to get safeguards in place now while he is young enough to accept them.

Bagamoyo1 · 27/12/2021 12:35

@IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere

I think my DC would say that I tended towards being overprotective about what they could and could not watch but I don't think that that ad warrants a complaint or moral panic. At the age of 3 my son was terrified by Brum (the little car that would drive off and have adventures on his own) but he got over it.

If you nephew is scared of that how does the family cope at the end of October when the shops are full of much scarier props and masks?

It’s about context. A little kid in a ghost costume at my door on October 31st saying “trick or treat” isn’t scary. If I woke at 4am to find that kid standing by my bed I’d be terrified!
DreamingofTimbuktu · 27/12/2021 12:35

I think it is your fault for not checking the terms correctly- there’s no point complaining just supervise your son better

TooMuchPaper · 27/12/2021 12:36

The child was frightened and that's ok. One of mine was terrified of Thomas the Tank Engine (as a toddler) and even at the age of 6 refused to watch it!
However I would be very mindful in future of what he plays, what device he uses, and what controls are set on the device. Assume nothing is suitable unless you check it yourself before he plays it. Make sure ads are switched off etc.

CoutureBakes · 27/12/2021 12:38

I've seen this ad pop up when we were using YouTube on the T.V..even my teens thought it was a bit much....

Dillydilly01 · 27/12/2021 12:40

At six years old, your nephew should not have been upstairs, unsupervised by himself with a phone.

I did not see anything remotely scary with that clip, obviously though your nephew did - if he had been in the same room as adults, he may not have got a fright or would have had the security of being beside adults who could instantly re-assure him.

A lesson learnt for you all.

CoutureBakes · 27/12/2021 12:41

Just to clarify it was an amazon advert and it was just bizzare. It kind of reminded me of a jumpscare horror theme at the beginning it's totally unnecessary and I'm not the least bit squeamish...I'm just not sure where they were going with it.

Your teenagers thought this advert was a bit much? I found that incredibly unlikely. It's honestly no worse than what's shown in many cartoons or kids films.
ShaneTheThird · 27/12/2021 12:42

Op have you actually watched any children's cartoons? Some of them are terrifying and worse than that advert. That advert was perfectly suitable for all ages to watch. The advertising standards agency wouldn't entertain a complaint about it. And that comes from me, someone who as an adult is very scared of plasticine and stop motion!

eurochick · 27/12/2021 12:43

A dr friend gave my child a puzzle where you take the skin off to reveal layers of blood vessels, muscle and eventually bone before. I think she was about four. Her daughter had one too.

MarshmallowFondant · 27/12/2021 12:46

Yes put in a complaint. Will give some poor sod working at Amazon/OFCOM a great laugh.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 27/12/2021 12:56

Seriously get a grip and supervise your child!

Sitchervice · 27/12/2021 12:58

I can't find anywhere it says OK for 4 plus on angry birds. In fact I found this:

It's here @Sitchervice

To put in a complaint about Amazon for this?
LookItsMeAgain · 27/12/2021 13:03

As @icedcoffees said (and I think it is worth repeating):

The app itself is suitable for 4yo - as in, the game is okay for a 4yo to play, but that doesn't mean the adverts will be suitable for a 4yo.

If you don't want your child to see ads, you'll need to pay for the premium version. All free apps will have adverts in them - it's how the developers make their money.

Please bear that in mind if you're letting a 6 year old play a game (probably the free version if adverts are coming up during play) that is actually ok for a 4 year old but really shouldn't be played (according to the games own developers by someone under the age of 13.

I don't think you would have a leg to stand on there @SoniaFouler.

My dd was the same with TTTE, never watched it again. We laugh at how now she is 15.

The thing is there is often no rhyme or reason what children find scary and/ or unsettling but this is not complaint worthy and I'm not sure it is any worse than many adverts on during the day.

Closer supervision is the key here.

seeseesee · 27/12/2021 13:06

@SoniaFouler I haven't read full thread sorry - my 6 year old would have been scared by the ad you saw too - what I have learned is that you need to supervise the screen the whole time because even with blocks on, inappropriate things still pop up. Googling images is the worst I have found. Youtube too, the ads for films are often too adult. Also, you need to watch things as the age indication given isn't necessarily going to fit with what is okay for your dc.

User754390 · 27/12/2021 13:07

Probably best to pay for the premium version so it is age appropriate for a young child though that didn't look as bad as Tom and Jerry

sst1234 · 27/12/2021 13:10

Wonder why people post in AIBU but then ignore the overwhelming majority that say they are being unreasonable. Often wonder what these are like to deal with in real life.

User754390 · 27/12/2021 13:11

6 is an age where different things can be scary, DS was terrified of the Lion King film which is a U rating and got in a right state about it at that age.
