@PAFMO, I haven’t heard the phrase “ the screaming abdabs” for years! Thank you for reminding me (fondly) of my Mum and Aunties!
Me too! I thought I made it up as my husband takes the piss when I say it!

crazyjinglist · 27/12/2021 22:35

Don’t understand people going apeshit over a roast dinner

Confused I think people tend to rat it and enjoy it rather than going apeshit about it. I'm 50 and have eaten one every Christmas as far back as I can remember. I don't recall anyone going apeshit.

XelaM · 27/12/2021 22:37

@PAFMO

"I like seeing family
I like the fact my child's grandparents buy her things even if they haven't received the royal warrant to do so
I don't give a fuck who sits where at the table
I'm an adult not 4 so I didn't have the screaming abdabs when dp asked me what I wanted and I named a couple of books
I didn't receive handwritten thank you cards (fountain pen pbvs) by 3pm yesterday from my nieces and nephews but that's ok.
I don't feel the need to start a MN thread to moan that my MIL is still breathing despite the arsenic I've added to everything on her plate
Etc etc.

Dear god but the professionally offended have been out in force since early yesterday."

Love this Grin 😂 I feel the same way

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/12/2021 22:39

Hate Christmas! I enjoy the build up and Christmas morning because I have children but if I didn't I absolutely would not bother, I'd take my decorations down on Boxing Day if I could get away with it but they are always down by the 28th. Once my youngest no longer believes then we are going away somewhere lovely every Christmas. I feel stressed and claustrophobic at Christmas time and the horrible week in between is like some kind of weird limbo. Get me to spring!!

Hurray for these opinions.
lightisnotwhite · 27/12/2021 23:04

I love cards.

Yes they are uncoordinated with each other and don’t fit with a Christ,as scheme.

But it requires money time and effort. So every card means something. And I think getting 20 cards is much cooler than 20 social media likes,

Curiousmouse · 27/12/2021 23:07

I like cards too. I always choose them carefully.

I like sprouts and turkey, mince pies and Christmas cake, and crystallised ginger in all forms. I don't like milk chocolate of any kind.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 27/12/2021 23:24

I hate giving cards, so we don’t send them. OH likes receiving them though so we begrudgingly keep them up. Confused

There is no difference between putting your tree up early and taking it down early than there is putting your tree up later then taking it down later Wink

We don’t like turkey so we don’t buy or eat it.

It’s fine to have Christmas Day just as a family group, I don’t understand the fuss of cooking a laborious roast dinner for loads of people, instead of enjoying a lazy day with the kids in your pjs.

We don’t celebrate any of the religious aspects of Christmas.

Gift giving for adults is naff, I would rather receive nothing than a thoughtless gift.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 27/12/2021 23:36

I cannot be arsed with Elf on the shelf, why do I need to create more mess in my house than my DC can?

Also, they hate it and have told me under no circumstances am I to get one. Winner!!

Goldenbear · 27/12/2021 23:42

I love shiny jewellery as a gift preferably fairly expensive and I don't care if I'm living up to some cliché about gifts for women! I absolutely, 100% expect a gift from DH, preferably jewellery but could be good quality clothing - DH is very good at presents so not a problem!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 27/12/2021 23:46

I like my son’s girlfriend and she likes me. They’re at her parents this year and I’m glad they had a lovely time. Next year they’ll probably come to me, but if not that’s ok too.
I got a boots 3 for 2 gift set and was just grateful a person thought to buy me a gift. I also got a scented candle and other token gifts that mumsnet turns their noses up at and I blooming love them! I’m genuinely touched that anyone outside my immediate family buys for me.
I was given some beautiful cards this year, and will struggle to bin / recycle them when the time comes.
I like both sprouts and cranberry sauce.

XelaM · 27/12/2021 23:53

I LOVE cranberry sauce with EVERYTHING- literally everything (including fish 🤪)

@baffledbunny

I have an odd opinion on Santa Claus, which I only just thought of yesterday and have not shared with anyone really (til now!)

Hope I don't offend anyone, (that's really not my intention anyway) and it's a bit half-baked, but I really think Santa Claus is actually Satan in disguise (aka Satan's claws lol).

The reason being that Christmas is actually supposed to be about Jesus's birth and in theory all focus should be on him at this time of year - his story, teachings etc. Yet.. each year the one person everyone seems to go on and on about is Santa Claus.., It's like this big red guy just shows up and steals the show! (Is he red for the fires of hell?!)

Santa is like some look-at-me narcissist who wants to steal the attention away from the birthday boy at his party. Because of Santa/Satan, Christmas always seems to be about presents, and being obsessed with buying things, and getting kids (and adults) obsessed with thinking of what they'll get, etc. He like this evil distraction that is taking away the attention we should be giving God, making Christmas a celebration about capitalism and materialism instead. We're teaching our kids to want material things and value others based on what they give/get etc, and it causes so much unncessary pain and strife each year, at a time when we should really be thinking of Jesus's teachings instead.

Anyway, I'm not a Christian but I don't remember seeing anything around this time of year on Jesus or his teachings. If you're a Christian you probably do, but as an outsider, I kind of think there should be more focus on him. I guess I'm not going to seek it out as I'm non-religious but I'd want it to be more mainstream, as that is what it's all about.

I have no desire to offend any Christians on here though so apologies if my opnion is off (I do realise St Nicholas is supposed to be a saint ) but I guess I just wanted to throw it out there. It's just a bit frustrating sometimes to see all the materialism at this time of year. The capitalists are winning as usual, as none of us can see past the big jolly smiley image...

Did you get weed for Christmas Xmas Grin

I am a sort of Christian. My faith isn't mainstream. It's around the old tradition of the desert fathers and the mystics pre reformation. Mysticism, the inner life and also I am a member of a 12 step program.

My church is independent. I love more about how we serve the community than my dislikes so I have learnt how to discern smile and nod.

I love your description of Santa Claus. It fits well. After all we are told not to have other God's

Gods of money, materialism, consumerism is prevalent right now as it always has been. It fits

I would say I am Omnistic meaning I see truth and truthes in everything. I don't believe one faith has the monopoly on all the answers

I also see main stream Christianity as turning God into Santa too. If you don't abide by the rules your off to hell for all eternity 🙄 Some loving God that is

Man made God into man image and that was never how it waa supposed to be

Blame Henry Vlll for that and the reformation. There is far more to Christianity than people realise

Mamanyt · 28/12/2021 00:47

I ADORE kitchen gadets and small appliances as gifts!

Twinkleylight · 28/12/2021 01:11

Why does everyone obsess about prosecco? Cremant would be a better alternative sparkling wine to prosecco other than champagne.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 28/12/2021 01:27

@drpet49

Roast dinner is overrated and not special
This!
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 28/12/2021 01:54

We always had cranberry sauce too and I'm even older than 47!

I eat it all year round, usually with brie in a sandwich.

Hate bread sauce and NEVER eat it.

We have a fake tree but largely because we're in Australia and real, proper trees cost a mint of money and are teeny. We can get bigger "real trees" but they are NOT the right sort of fir tree, the branches are too weak to hold anything up properly (tried it first year, never again).

Hate Elf on the Shelf and will not get involved with it.

Yes, I'm not a fan of Prosecco. There are loads of sparkling whites that are cheaper than champagne, and a lot of them are much nicer than Prosecco.
phoenixchb · 28/12/2021 03:42

I discourage people buying me gifts unless it is good quality chocolates or flowers or a promise to get treated to a meal out. I have reached an age where I have everything I need, and if there is a need to buy something, I can satisfy my own specific tastes. At this age the gifts I most commonly received were toiletries - how many hand soaps, hand creams et al can one possibly use? If I ever receive these now, they go straight into the box marked 'charity shop'. Hey and guess what? I now prefer to spend Christmas Day/Boxing Day on my own.....a time to relax, a time to indulge in box sets, a time to try out a new cocktail or 3 and a new exotic recipe without having to worry about allergies, food preferences and the rest. This year I had the bonus of both adjoining neighbours being away for Christmas Day....so a time to crank up the old Christmas favourites and sing-a-long as loud as I liked. Absolute Bliss! Absolutely no drama!

Mere1 · 28/12/2021 06:53

PAFMO
I love your post and totally agree.

Dontwanttolivewithmylover · 28/12/2021 08:07

I prefer to buy my own presents to me as I know exactly what I like in the colours I like. No candle, make-up or toiletries thanks. I bought a combi microwave/oven/grill, a set of spatulas and bowl scrapers. A grater/zester as used by a Korean pastry chef on YouTube. A new ionic shower head and hose for the mixer tap over the bath (fantastic flow streams) and a set of Lock and Lock storage containers. 2 pairs of boots and a blouse from M&S and pjs, thick socks, a dress and pleather trousers from Primark. Well pleased.

It certainly is an odd opinion Confused. You seem to be ascribing a bunch of sinister motives, blame and horrible personality traits to a benign and cheery made-up character.

Christmas hasn't been hijacked by santa - he can't hijack anything, because he doesn't exist. The fact that people celebrate Christmas as a no longer very religious festival is because... most of them are not religious! And that's not down to santa Grin It's perfectly normal for societies and cultures to retain enjoyable festivals and traditions long after most people have stopped believing in the deity/deities.

Santa also doesn't create materialism. Do you really think it's only the people who 'do santa' who have children who want stuff? There are always plenty of people on MN who buy their dc mountains of stuff and don't do santa, and many many people for whom santa brings a stocking of little cheap things while the main presents are from family.

Greed, materialism etc are to do with human nature, society and children's upbringing, not santa Hmm. My dc don't want much, are always delighted with what they get from us (though we don't spend a lot on presents) and relatives. They get a little stocking from Father Christmas, as we did when I was a child. Plus of course santa was a tradition long before the massive hand-wringing about the over-commercialisation amd materialism of Christmas became a thing!

crazyjinglist · 28/12/2021 09:40

Or, as @SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree rather more succinctly put it... Grin

Did you get weed for Christmas?

Ibane · 28/12/2021 10:09

You sound deeply confused about the history and development of Christianity, @keffie12,. Then again, @baffledbunny’s ‘Santa is Satan’ take seems to unaware of early Christianity borrowing the Roman solstice celebrations and that Christmas in the Middle Ages was a drunken, raucous carnival.
