Any other different festive unpopular opinions?

Turkey tastes like wet napkins
Stuffing is the work of the devil.
Why on earth you have Christmas dinner on Christmas Day is beyond me, spending several hours away from friends and family just to make the Turkey edible is not my idea of fun. Give me an Iceland party platter at day!
I give my husband and mum a list of stuff to pick from each year.

Furries · 27/12/2021 04:17

My unpopular opinion is - adults don’t need presents. My small,scattered, family agreed three years ago “no presents”.

We all have our own reasons for financial difficulty. And we all agreed that Christmas presents for grown adults were daft in our circumstances. We’d rather that each of us is able to spend money as needed throughout the year.

We still do very personal cards between us. And we still do presents/money for birthdays.

Same with my adult friends - we still do birthdays, but don’t worry about Christmas. I do buy presents/give money for the children of a couple of close friends.

Christmas definitely feels less stressful with this approach.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the thought of treating those I love - and if we all had a chunk of disposable income then we’d find it very easy to treat each other. But having this “pact’ has taken the seasonal pressure off and we know that each of us is therefore in a bit of a better position to spend money where needed throughout the year on what we require.

Cauliflower cheese and mashed potatoes do not belong in a roast.

If you didn't put your decorations up so early then you wouldn't be itching to take them down on boxing day.

Put the decorations up late or when school breaks up for Christmas and take them down on the 12th night. Simples.

MeanWeedratStew · 27/12/2021 08:11

Does anyone have a link to the thread in which a poster told her kids she didn't like the gift they chose?

I haven't been able to find any of the usual "Waah, I hate my gifts" threads this year. Where are they?

sweetbellyhigh · 27/12/2021 08:23

I find Christmas a cinch!

We all sleep in late, we only do presents for the children, and the main meal is a leisurely brunch topped up with bubbly.

Always a fantastic day.

merryxmasmelodies · 27/12/2021 08:41

I love the song 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' and will laugh scornfully at anyone who suggests that there's anything "inappropriate" about it.

100problems · 27/12/2021 13:40

On Christmas Day kids get tonnes of stuff. They absolutely don't need a bloody Christmas Eve box.

All shelves should be taken down on 30th November in houses that plan to entertain those ridiculous elves.

RobertaFirmino · 27/12/2021 14:05

Regifting B&H means you are now the person you cursed for giving you the stuff in the first place.

Molton Brown etc. is a waste of money.

Christmas-themed items, esp. Christmas jumpers, as gifts are pointless. They are out of season by Boxing Day.

Figmentofmyimagination · 27/12/2021 15:57

Hate photos of extended family members engaged in wholesome family outdoor pursuits on Boxing Day.

Ragwort · 27/12/2021 16:16

I love Christmas but totally agree with a PSP, I have no wish to play with DC and their new toys, would much rather be peeling veg in the kitchen ... and the thought of 'snuggling on the sofa in front of a film' (you only ever hear this on MN) is tedious in the extreme.

Lovemusic33 · 27/12/2021 16:35

Christmas Eve boxes
Matching Christmas pj’s
Elf on the f*cking shelf

None of these things are needed.

PeeAche · 27/12/2021 16:41

@merryxmasmelodies

I love the song 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' and will laugh scornfully at anyone who suggests that there's anything "inappropriate" about it.
Why are women always the victims? It strikes me that the female lead in this song is just bemoaning her lack of choice. Poor woman just wants to stay and get laid.

As if that wasn't enough of an unpopular Christmas opinion, here's another: multicoloured lights are the best. White is tasteful, but Christmas is not a time for good taste.

fetchacloth · 27/12/2021 17:23

@QuiltedHippo

I love Christmas cards! And find the pompous "they go straight in the recycling if I'm dared to be sent one" posts so irritating
@QuiltedHippo - totally agree. The cards decorate the room nicely and look very festive. After the season I'm happy to recycle them by using the 'blank' side of the cards for shopping lists. This works better than using pieces of paper (too flimsy) and the card then gets used twice.🙂
fetchacloth · 27/12/2021 17:26

@EishetChayil

Posting big piles of presents on social media is the height of chavdom.
LOL I agree 🤣🤣
Puffin208 · 27/12/2021 17:29

This year's apparent must have toy for all ages where we live, an escooter, is the work of the devil and probably going to raise the local road accident rate all on its own. Especially if the little darlings don't get off the gorram road.

Londoncallingme · 27/12/2021 17:43

@katienana

The only veg that should be on a dinner is sprouts, carrots and roast parsnips. Cooking the dinner is not hard. You have to have turkey. Making kids wait till after lunch to open presents is child cruelty. Santa brings all the presents!
Noooo…Santa brings the stocking gifts to play with in the morning then family gifts together after lunch - obviously!
BoredZelda · 27/12/2021 17:50

Pigs in blankets are rank. So are mince pies.

Nobody actually wants all that food on Christmas Day.

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 27/12/2021 17:53

Sprouts fried in Marmite. They are delicious 😋

claremmm · 27/12/2021 17:56

I’ve got v sensitive skin and Baylis and Harding hand soap is my saviour! Every other hand wash makes my hands really sore

TorySteller · 27/12/2021 17:58

I hate it when people want to buy you ‘surprise’ presents. No. There’s enough tat in the world. I know I sound ungrateful, but if you must, please just buy me something from my carefully curated list.

ChristmasRobins · 27/12/2021 17:59

@PAFMO

I like seeing family I like the fact my child's grandparents buy her things even if they haven't received the royal warrant to do so I don't give a fuck who sits where at the table I'm an adult not 4 so I didn't have the screaming abdabs when dp asked me what I wanted and I named a couple of books I didn't receive handwritten thank you cards (fountain pen pbvs) by 3pm yesterday from my nieces and nephews but that's ok. I don't feel the need to start a MN thread to moan that my MIL is still breathing despite the arsenic I've added to everything on her plate Etc etc.

Dear god but the professionally offended have been out in force since early yesterday. Xmas Confused

Goodness, yes, this.
wiccamum · 27/12/2021 18:01

@merryxmasmelodies I agree, love that song and particularly the Rufus Wainwright version ( but he’s so lovely anyway, so maybe that’s why I adore it)
I love getting scented candles as a gift. In fact I did ask for one this year and got some bloody gorgeous ones.
As for gifts bought by the kids, how can anyone be so mean about that? (FYI I’ve not read that thread PPs have mentioned). My DD got a Saturday job this year so it’s the first time she’s bought gifts for us “herself”. She spent ages choosing them and was more excited about giving us ours than opening her own. It wouldn’t matter what she got me, the pride and excitement she felt was the best bit.
And cauliflower cheese does belong with a roast. It’s amazing

JeffThePilot · 27/12/2021 18:02

I unashamedly love coloured lights on trees. It reminds me of the Christmas trees we had in our house in the 70s/early 80s. Pure nostalgia but it just feels properly Christmassy to me.

crazyjinglist · 27/12/2021 18:03

I love sprouts
And bread sauce
And prosecco (though champagne is better ).
Christmas dinner (and roast dinners in general) are absolutely delicious as long as you're a decent cook.
I love spending Christmas with my (and dh's) family and don't find any of them difficult at all.
I don't find buying presents stressful or pressured.
I don't think that doing the Father Christmas thing constitutes 'lying to your children'.
Starting Christmas in November is naff and spoils it.
I love board games.
Definitely not a fan of Bayliss and Harding though.

Beseen22 · 27/12/2021 18:03

All decs away on boxing day
Chinese for christmas dinner
Pjs and grey jumpers are the only gifts I really truly will use
There is not enough time between the 25th and the 1st for me to go to from fat christmas pudding to new year new me.
