Lots of the Christmas cards sent are not appreciated in the slightest by the recipient.

PatriotCanes · 26/12/2021 08:34

I'd rather be given 10 bottles of handwash or shower gel that I'd actually use than another bottle of prosecco.

And I'd have bread sauce with every roast every week all year if it was easier to make in single portions. I've tried freezing it but then cooking a single portion in the microwave tends to make it into a small scone.

EishetChayil · 26/12/2021 08:37

Posting big piles of presents on social media is the height of chavdom.

DappledThings · 26/12/2021 08:37

There is no need to be stressing about presents on Christmas Eve; hiding them, wrapping at the last minute, waiting up till 2am so the children are asleep etc. Father Christmas brings stockings only which are left by the fireplace. All other presents under the tree as soon as they are wrapped. It does not need to be so exhausting as people make it sound.

Decorations stay up till Twelfth Night. Anything earlier than that and you are not doing it properly.

"I'm not sending Christmas cards, I'm donating to charity instead" gets my goat

Send cards or not, I don't care. But if you can't be bothered with them, I wish you would admit that, especially if (1) you could easily afford to donate to charity AND send cards, (2) you claim you're not sending cards due to environmental concerns whilst still having a real Christmas tree

@PAFMO

I like seeing family I like the fact my child's grandparents buy her things even if they haven't received the royal warrant to do so I don't give a fuck who sits where at the table I'm an adult not 4 so I didn't have the screaming abdabs when dp asked me what I wanted and I named a couple of books I didn't receive handwritten thank you cards (fountain pen pbvs) by 3pm yesterday from my nieces and nephews but that's ok. I don't feel the need to start a MN thread to moan that my MIL is still breathing despite the arsenic I've added to everything on her plate Etc etc.

Dear god but the professionally offended have been out in force since early yesterday. Xmas Confused

Agree wholeheartedly.

Some people on here are such hard work, whinging and sulking if things don't go their way. I feel sorry for their hapless inlaws and extended family.

And they are then backed up and validated by other posters.

@PatriotCanes

You can freeze bread sauce in single portions. After it's defrosted, add a bit of milk to loosen it, and microwave for a short time only

Faevern · 26/12/2021 08:49

I think Bayliss and Harding is viewed (by some) as a poor mans Moulton Brown, they look similar. I use it to refill the everyday hand wash and lotion bottles.

@DreamerSeven I roasted my sprouts yesterday bloody lovely they were.

@antisocialsocialclub we found some popping crackers in the loft I bought in a sale one year not only did they bang but blasted confetti everywhere. Those little screwdrivers are handy though.

Mezmer · 26/12/2021 08:50

It’s not cooking the dinner that’s a faff, it’s serving it to a large number of people so it stays hot that is hard. And the amount of extras involved - cauliflower cheese, five types veg, Turkey and ham, Yorkshire’s, pigs and stuffing. getting that amount of food out on plates and hot to ten people is a massive challenge even for someone with a nice kitchen and a lot of practice.

That's just reminded me of some more of my unpopular opinions....

A second meat is not required and Yorkshire puddings have no place with a Christmas Dinner unless you are having beef.

nonevernotever · 26/12/2021 08:54

I love bread sauce and Brussels sprouts. I love my family. Unlike when my ddad was alive and liked to be the centre of attention, We had no drama at all yesterday (a mild flap when we discovered the roast potatoes had gone into the oven initially without any oil didn't count). I hope my lovely mil liked her birthday present (Christmas day) and her secret Santa present. We had fab recyclable crackers that had gifts we actually wanted in them -seeds, jam, shampoo bar, etc. We all did part of Christmas dinner so it wasn't hard for anyone, and we shared the clean up. We didn't watch anything on TV. When we wanted to go home we did. And crisps, cheese and pickled onions (no sugar please) are the only possible supper on Christmas day.

Timeisavirtue · 26/12/2021 08:55

@Soubriquet

I don’t care if I don’t get a Christmas present as long as my children are happy.
This.... also for me when you have kids Christmas is all about them... 😊
luckylavender · 26/12/2021 08:57

I love Turkey, hate gravy, don't see the point of crackers, would regift any Baylis and Harding, don't wear PJs.

Theredjellybean · 26/12/2021 08:58

It's not compulsory or the law that you have to have five different veg, plus cauliflower cheese etc etc.
Its just a roast dinner... I cook that for eight every Sunday..
I don't get why Christmas is so "exhausting"

Whohashiddenthebiscuits · 26/12/2021 08:58

If you really hate playing board games then even though it’s Christmas and family together time, sod off and leave them too it. Everyone is happy and it’s your Christmas too.

(Decided this a couple of years ago, with all the cooking, entertaining etc, Christmas Day is hard work and I want to spend at least part of it relaxing and not doing something I really dislike).

HP87 · 26/12/2021 08:58

I love building up vouchers for a decent home product. My birthday is near Christmas, two years ago I saved vouchers for a dyson v11, this year I'm getting vouchers to cover a rug cleaner. Can't bloody wait to get it!

Luhou · 26/12/2021 08:58

Christmas dinner is overated and time consuming. We had filler steak yesterday, it was delicious and we had all morning playing with DD instead of being in the kitchen.

Ah @Mezmer your so right up until about 5 mins before serving my kitchen looks serene, drinking prosecco, singing along to the music , eyes on the timings.

5 mins later it's bedlam.

But we still love the Christmas dinner and my DP puts the kitchen back to how it should be.

We always have Yorkshire's too.

Pawprintpaper · 26/12/2021 09:01

@Burnt0utMum

Christmas Dinner is just a big faff that no one really enjoys. We had lamb and rice with lots of side salad, delicious and every enjoyed it.

My kids don't believe in santa and never have done because I didn't want to lie to them and it works fine for us. The magic of Christmas is definitely still there and they still enjoy talking about santa as a fictional character.

Our decorations go up in November because I love Christmas and want to enjoy it for as long as possible.

I also love kitchen appliances and household items as gifts. Would rather have something useful than gift for the sake of it.

I think we could be friends Grin
luckylavender · 26/12/2021 09:05

Prosecco, I forgot Prosecco. What's the point of it?

CharityDingle · 26/12/2021 09:05

I like getting vouchers.
I don't turn up my nose at any gift.
Some people put too much pressure on themselves, or allow others to do so, and Christmas becomes a disaster waiting to happen.
Not all families get on well.
The world will not end if you eat something you enjoy on Christmas Day, if you do not like turkey.

I'm sure there's more.
FWIW, I went shopping the day before Christmas Eve and bought myself a gift, go, me!

Badbadbunny · 26/12/2021 09:07

@Sprogonthetyne

I also like them and would happily munch my way through a box of Thorntons.

For my unpopular opinion: I think pretty much every Christmas condiment is overrated. If anyone actually like bread sauce or cranberry then we'd eat them all year round.

We do eat them all year round!
The2Omicronnies · 26/12/2021 09:08

I like listening to Christmas music continuously from 1st November onwards.

Lovemusic33 · 26/12/2021 09:08

Chocolate biscuit are horrible. I have been gifted several boxes, I’m sick of chocolate and now have a huge pile, when will I ever be able to start my diet?

Sprouts……yuk

Baylis and Harding, I would like them if I didn’t have eczema.

Turkey……meh 🤢
