Christmas trees and decorations should stay up until 12th night. Don't put them up early if you're going to get sick of them and want to start spring cleaning.

Far too many women think Christmas is about performance cleaning and performance catering ... you are your own worst enemies.

katseyes7 · 27/12/2021 19:33

I don't like 'fancy' chocolates. Someone sent me a very decent box of chocolates this year and they're wasted on me. Completely.
I'm passing them on to someone who was very generous to me despite me not being able to reciprocate.
I'd be much happier with a selection box.
Ditto scented candles. I used to love them but now they make me wheeze (l have asthma). Someone else sent me a very nice one for Christmas but l'm going to regift it to someone who will enjoy it.

Lovemelongthai · 27/12/2021 19:36

@whatdolmean omg I totally agree

Hobbitytoes · 27/12/2021 19:47

@bumblebee1987

We've always swapped lists so the kids all get things from their Christmas lists. Means kids get what they ask for and practical as no duplicates or tat no one wants. Kids are still happy Christmas morning!

I love a voucher for my hairdressers or salon to get my eye brows done. Hell, I would have preferred a greggs voucher to the smelly candle from my secret santa!

I agree about Christmas cards though. Same goes for thank you cards, I know my neices are grateful for their gifts I don't need a card destined for the recycling. They told me so when they handed me the thank you card!

I am as big a scrooge in real life Xmas Grin

Celestine70 · 27/12/2021 19:47

I don't like anything about Christmas.

TheWitchOfShields · 27/12/2021 19:52

I love Christmas presents that I want and actually NEED. My DM asked what I wanted for Christmas. She doesn't have much money and the conversation went like this:
Me: Nothing, there's nothing I need
DM: I didn't ask that
Me: Leggings or Pjs or perfume from Next
DM: But I buy you those every year, is there anything else?
Me: Yeah, but I use them and they're 'needed' items, nope nothing else.
DM: HmmConfused

I also told relatives to buy DS stuff he needed or would use, for example we bought him a guitar, so asked Dsis to get him a strap and plecs and asked DM to get him the case and the books he reads. Less waste, less B&M tat to send to charity shop, less money wasted.

Have learned it's not rude to leave some of your Christmas dinner when you're stuffed, as long as you thank the host

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/12/2021 19:54

Writing Christmas lists taking family every you’d actually like rather than random guesses is so much nicer. It’s a wish list of things you’d not buy for yourself not a demand note.

Cooking Christmas dinner is easy so long as you have the timings.

I don’t like Christmas pudding so we have a dessert we actually like. This year was a homemade (well, from a local bakery) chocolate cheesecake. It’s amazing.

If someone gifts something I don’t like I’m still genuinely grateful they thought of me. It’s never made me feel angry and can’t grasp why it would.

GreenWhiteViolet · 27/12/2021 20:01

I don't like the vast majority of Christmas pop songs. Or Christmas movies - twee and predictable.

I think many parents go completely overboard with the whole Santa thing and make their children feel bad for figuring out the truth. The 'magic of Christmas is ruined!' comments make me roll my eyes. As if you can't enjoy Christmas without literally believing in a magical present-delivering fat man.

Elf on the shelf and any other Christmas-themed surveillance and coercion measures are horrible. Telling children they're being constantly watched and judged, even if it's by a whimsical character, really isn't a good thing.

Fluffmum · 27/12/2021 20:02

I love Baylis and Harding, I don’t mind visitors any time of the year.

bumblebee1987 · 27/12/2021 20:03

@Hobbitytoes

I guess I probably more mean that I think it's odd asking adults what they want, as it takes away the surprise element if you know what you're getting and you may as well just buy it yourself and the other person buy what they want and cut out the pointless exchange! I think I get irrationally annoyed about being asked what my kids want because I have a child with a birthday a few days after Christmas, and he will not write a list, so I find it really hard to come up with two lots of presents for us to get him, let alone a load of presents from other people! Also, he has super generous grandparents, which I am very grateful for, but I can't think of hundreds of pounds worth of things for them to give him a few days apart 😂 I just want them to use their initiative!

I think my issue with vouchers is that for example, my husband gave his parents a voucher, and they gave him a voucher. Why not just NOT get a voucher for each other, keep your £50 for yourself, and buy what you want?! Why do we give vouchers which are limited to a specific place, just stop buying them and use your own cash wherever you want! I don't get it 😆

Yes thank you cards are the same, no one has time to painstakingly force a child to write out cards that will end up in the recycling! Just assume they are grateful and be done with it!

Haha...I'm beginning to think i'm actually more of a scrooge in real life than I realised...!

Hobbitytoes · 27/12/2021 20:13

@bumblebee1987 you're right it's not a surprise but I guess it's just nice to open a wee something from my sister, aunt etc even though I know it's a voucher!

I used to get irrationally angry at all the waste my in laws spent on the DC each year, now I just smile, let them open it and take to charity shop! They are always so generous and its just such a waste when in a few years that money could have gone towards a car or their first holiday to ibiza or wherever! Xmas Wink

Asthenia · 27/12/2021 20:18

I hate buying presents for children and would much rather buy stuff for other adults! Kids get sooo many presents at Christmas and I find them really hard to buy for. I definitely think I’m very much in the minority on this one though Grin

IloveRitaConnors · 27/12/2021 20:29

I love Christmas but hate the fuss, the shopping, all the gifts, the 'what do you want, nothing, well I've got to get you something, it's Christmas', the go on have a drink it's Christmas, the queues everywhere, even for fuel they're buying when they aren't even going anywhere but are buying it anyway, the people everywhere..........
Sorry, basically hate the expectation that comes with Christmas, the 'weird' social norms around it, it really stresses me out. Every year I swear I won't do it then get guilt-tripped by everyone else's expectation.

mumofEandE · 27/12/2021 20:33

I like B&H stuff
I like when the gravy runs into the cauliflower cheese on my plate
I like crackers

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 27/12/2021 20:37

Christmas is spent in your own home having fun at your own pace in your jammies and no travelling to see rellies.

BoredZelda · 27/12/2021 20:47

Question: When did British people start eating cranberry sauce?? I didn't even know y'alls knew what it was!

It was a thing when I was a kid and I’m 47 now.

baffledbunny · 27/12/2021 20:49

I have an odd opinion on Santa Claus, which I only just thought of yesterday and have not shared with anyone really (til now!)

Hope I don't offend anyone, (that's really not my intention anyway) and it's a bit half-baked, but I really think Santa Claus is actually Satan in disguise (aka Satan's claws lol).

The reason being that Christmas is actually supposed to be about Jesus's birth and in theory all focus should be on him at this time of year - his story, teachings etc. Yet.. each year the one person everyone seems to go on and on about is Santa Claus.., It's like this big red guy just shows up and steals the show! (Is he red for the fires of hell?!)

Santa is like some look-at-me narcissist who wants to steal the attention away from the birthday boy at his party. Because of Santa/Satan, Christmas always seems to be about presents, and being obsessed with buying things, and getting kids (and adults) obsessed with thinking of what they'll get, etc. He like this evil distraction that is taking away the attention we should be giving God, making Christmas a celebration about capitalism and materialism instead. We're teaching our kids to want material things and value others based on what they give/get etc, and it causes so much unncessary pain and strife each year, at a time when we should really be thinking of Jesus's teachings instead.

Anyway, I'm not a Christian but I don't remember seeing anything around this time of year on Jesus or his teachings. If you're a Christian you probably do, but as an outsider, I kind of think there should be more focus on him. I guess I'm not going to seek it out as I'm non-religious but I'd want it to be more mainstream, as that is what it's all about.

I have no desire to offend any Christians on here though so apologies if my opnion is off (I do realise St Nicholas is supposed to be a saint ) but I guess I just wanted to throw it out there. It's just a bit frustrating sometimes to see all the materialism at this time of year. The capitalists are winning as usual, as none of us can see past the big jolly smiley image...

Hummingbirdcake · 27/12/2021 20:49

I love sprouts. Even without pancetta or chestnuts. Just don’t over cook them.

hangrylady · 27/12/2021 20:52

If my DH didn't buy me a present, and a decent one at that, I'd be absolutely fuming.

Dresslover1950s · 27/12/2021 21:07

Love sprouts

Don’t understand people going apeshit over a roast dinner and a present

Trolleys full of food what for? The shops are only shut for two days

Getting dressed up to spend all day indoors 🙄 I can understand if you were going to have a meal somewhere

Matching pyjamas
Silver and pink Christmas trees
Mince pies/Christmas pudding

Parents should let the kids decorate the tree. I know so many people who won't let their kids put so much as 1 decoration on the tree as it must be insta-ready. It's win win for me I put the lights on and let the kids have at the rest. If my wee one puts all the baubles on the bottom of the tree, so be it, there they will stay.
