No bathroom bin

If you are at relatives house with no bathroom bins where do you put your used sanitary stuff? I've been wrapping my tampons putting in handbag and putting them in the outside bin. I would always empty the bathroom bin and my periods are very heavy so need changing frequently., SIL isnt menopausal even my dad who lives alone has bathroom bins ??!!

I think the people that don't have bathroom bins are predominantly the ones who never have guests. There's a connection there I feel...

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 16:58

@FrangipaniBlue where do they put their dental floss though?

FrangipaniBlue · 26/12/2021 17:05

@Sparklingbrook

when people ask where you are going why can't you just say "to put something in the bin" ??

You could always wave it at them! But seriously it's all a bit uncomfortable and easily avoided by having a bathroom bin available.

Why does it need to be uncomfortable though?

How do people know or even need to know what you have in your hand?

Friend "where's your bin?"
Me "just over there in the corner"

It wouldn't enter my head to ask why she wanted to know where the bin was.

Conversely if I was in someone else's house -

Me "where's your bin?"
Friend "normal or recycling?"
Me "normal, I just have some rubbish to go in it"
Friend "it's over there in the corner"

Can people literally not walk through a room without being accosted by family/friends and interrogated about where they are going and what they are doing?

Nobody in this house uses dental floss; we have water piks.

Given we don't have overnight guests, who else would be using dental floss?

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2021 17:15

I have a bin in the bathroom. I'm fine with soap wrappers, toothpaste tubes, shampoo bottles and toilet roll tubes.

I just don't want used sanitary products in it. I don't want used condoms either. I'm just about okay with plasters with dried blood and pus, dental floss, waxy earbuds or soap scummy hair but I would prefer people wrapped them. My gaff, my rules.

IamGusFring · 26/12/2021 17:25

@Maireas

We could play a drinking game and have a drink every time someone says grim
or sanpro ffs 🙄
FrankGrillosWrist · 26/12/2021 17:38

Not in other peoples bins. Wrap it up & take it home with you.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 17:39

I don't like the word 'sanpro' either but it's quicker to type on here than 'tampons and sanitary towels' or 'feminine hygiene products'. I have never heard 'sanpro' in RL.

LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerceI8 · 26/12/2021 17:41

Why do people not want sanitary things in a bin in there house? The point of a bathroom is to keep all grim bodily functions in one place... So bloody rags in the kitchen bin is fine but a bathroom door opening into said kitchen is gross despite not many people using the toilet with the door open, so it's really not as unhygienic as a bloody pad in the bin.
I've genuinely never heard of taking nappies home instead of using the bin wherever you are, what do you do when a baby throws up?

TheGoogleMum · 26/12/2021 17:44

Yes I have found it so awkward in the past when staying at in laws without a bathroom bin! I havent had periods in a while now though and they do have a bin finally now

QuestionableMouse · 26/12/2021 17:46

@HippeePrincess

I’d rather have used sanitary products in the bathroom bin not the kitchen one I think that’s gross traipsing through the house to the room where you prep food. I’d flush a tampon if I used them.
@HippeePrincess

Tampons should NEVER be flushed. They keep expanding and contribute to blockages in pipes.

LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerceI8 · 26/12/2021 17:48

@TheGoogleMum were they waiting until you stopped need one😆

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 17:48

The one good thing about these threads is that a few more people get the message that tampons should never be flushed.
On other threads posters have argued that they have always flushed them and never had a plumbing problem completely missing the bigger picture.

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2021 17:49

@Maireas I've taken a drink on "gross". Lots of "minging" got me pissed yesterday.

Chely · 26/12/2021 17:54

We have a bin in the bathroom and the downstairs toilet for sanitary products and other rubbish (also have a recycling bin upstairs). My parents have never had one and I found it really awkward having to travel through the house to use kitchen bin.

Smorgasborb · 26/12/2021 18:03

@Svara

Could they use reusable options instead? I don't use a bathroom bin.
"Hello guest, welcome to the Borb household now here's your bedroom oh and just checking you use reusable sanitary protection because I haven't got a bin in the bathroom. No? Well here's the stash of moon cups I have for the purpose"
Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 18:06

@Smorgasborb, I think there's a market for a twee poem on the back of the bathroom door explaining the bin options in any particular house. Like the 'If you sprinkle when you tinkle please be sweet and wipe the seat' lines.

Horst · 26/12/2021 18:08

Because it’s a dry bin and we don’t use liners as you no overuse of plastic. Why would I want other peoples used items sat in my bin? It doesn’t get emptied that often due to it only being for toilet roll tubes/empty shower gels/toothpaste boxes.

In our new bathroom the bin won’t even be on display as it’s not got a lot of flower space due to built in units so they would have to start going though the cupboards to find it.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 26/12/2021 18:09

Not if you don’t want or see a need for a bin in the bathroom.

We don’t have bins in our bathrooms, and it’s never been an issue.

We have plenty of guests - day and overnight - but we don't have some weird set-up with our family / friends whereby anyone’s the least bit interested in what other people are putting in the bin. Confused There is zero interrogation about bin usage, and in fact, most people don’t even notice other people using it, let alone express some deep-seated desire to know what they’re putting in there. Seriously, I think some of you have a rather inflated idea about how much people care about your bin depositing.

Why would I install something into my bathroom that I have no need or want for, that I’d have to regularly empty, that contains other people’s wastage, when it would only be for other people’s purposes, not mine? In my home?

Well no in my in my MIL house ... she guards the kitchen 24/7 like a sphinx. Any attempt to enter would be thoroughly cross examined
MIL: where are you going? Do you want a drink? Shall I make you a sandwich?
Me: oh I just need to use the bin?
MIL: the bin? Well what is it dear?
Me: oh just bathroom rubbish
MIL: is it paper or card or plastic? The council are very funny about the bins you know and Kathleen told me she had a telling off because she put a milk carton in the normal bin and she's worried the council tax will go up now I told her to go to Watchdog but I don't think she will because she doesn't watch the BBC.
Me: oh neither really, it's just usual bin stuff
MIL: oh dear well give it to me and John will have a look and decide
Me: JUST GET A FUCKING BATHROOM BIN!!

Smorgasborb · 26/12/2021 18:17

I line ours with otherwise disposable plastic. The plastic around toilet rolls or kitchen paper, fruit and veg bags, mailing bags, anything.
Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 18:22

That sounds like something my MIL would do @Smorgasborb, kind of trying to be helpful but all very awkward. Twenty questions about everything. But they had a bathroom bin thank goodness.

GrinGrin there's already been a couple of "grim" comments, it's going well!

RoyalFamilyFan · 26/12/2021 18:25

Because lots of people would take it off you to put in the kitchen bin.

Do guy have a sign on your bin? Telling people about your rules or do you inform them prior to arrival?
