No bathroom bin

If you are at relatives house with no bathroom bins where do you put your used sanitary stuff? I've been wrapping my tampons putting in handbag and putting them in the outside bin. I would always empty the bathroom bin and my periods are very heavy so need changing frequently., SIL isnt menopausal even my dad who lives alone has bathroom bins ??!!

I don't think I'd like period pants or washable pads if you have to carry the used ones about. That's just me though.
I'm happy with tampons, it's good that there's more options available to young women for sanpro though. Choice is a good thing.

GirlOfTudor · 26/12/2021 13:28

I don't know what I'm more surprised by: the number of people here who don't have a bathroom bin, the person who only has 1 bin for the whole house, or the people expecting female visitors to carry their used sanitary products through a house that isn't their own, to dump in the kitchen bin.
I'm especially astounded by the person who didn't like the smell of her daughter and daughter's friends sanitary products in the bathroom bin, so instead of emptying it more often or asking that they do it, has just removed the bin completely. So now these teenage girls need to figure out where to dispose of their private waste when in a less familiar house than their own, with adults who are less familiar. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I do enjoy these bathroom bin threads. Now all we need is a loo brush discussion 😂

Maireas · 26/12/2021 15:01

I'm bemused by all these shaming parades where girls and women have to do a long walk through a house clutching sanpro as they make their way eventually to the kitchen bin.
I'd have no idea what guests put in my kitchen bin, nor do I care. It gets emptied and washed regularly.
Anyway. I own a loo brush!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 15:06

We haven't had a shoes on or off in the house thread for ages.

I don't care if that helps? You can take them off, keep them on, put your own slippers on I have a bin and a toilet brush and you can help yourself to food and drink My style of hosting is... horizontal laid back Grin

No bin here. I'm the only female in the house and I just dispose of sanpro in the outside bin each time. No big deal.

Our bathroom is small so no room for a bin really. It's never been an issue

As for if guests have their period I'm maybe OTT but I keep a little period display out in the toilets a guest might use. DD isn't far off puberty either so I think it's nice to normalise.

I have this as well, even though my DD1 and I use cloth pads, I keep some tampons and disposable pads on a shelf by the loos just in case a guest gets caught out.

I may be fine carrying around my pads, but beyond having to remove bine because of nosy dogs and toddlers (which I replaced with a platic bag with a hook on the door), I generally try to make basic needs like menstrual products or throwing things away easier. For keeping recycling separate, I use a small container on my windowsill that I can empty when I finishing cleaning.

I get everyone feels differently, but I struggle to see why a toilet loo is more disgusting than having to take it to the kitchen. I'd have thought most bins were a bit ick but sanitation is just something to deal with.

ChristmasyFairy · 26/12/2021 15:48

It's not just periods though. Many women use panty liners or Tena pads and the like, especially when they are older.

If you ever have a woman in your house as a visitor, even for a coffee, you have to assume they might need a bin in the bathroom.

Just because you don't need one it doesn't mean no one else will.

Do you ever have female friends round for a coffee?

Do you ever have women who might need to dispose of any kind of pad?

I'm trying to imagine where your bin is @tigger1001 :)

Our bin (for rubbish) is out of the front door, down 6 steps, and across the drive to the corner where the bins stay.

The drive is also shared by 3 other houses who could see their neighbours putting stuff in the bin.

Fine if your bin is right next to your door, but surely you don't go out to dispose of a single pad or tampon pro several times a day? Or do you 'harvest it' in some bag inside then take it outside?

VanGoghsDog · 26/12/2021 16:14

Some men use panty liners if they have a bit of a drip due to prostate.

FrangipaniBlue · 26/12/2021 16:15

@Kite22

Well if you have a cuppa you might just need a wee. I do like that you know exactly which guest uses what as sanpro and where they are in the menopause though-handy!

That's what I was thinking Grin

There are only 3 female guests who ever come in my house.

Why is it strange that I would know that my MIL is post menopausal and my 2 best friends use menstrual cups? Confused

FrangipaniBlue · 26/12/2021 16:17

@Haffiana

It seems from this thread that the no-bin people very rarely if ever have guests and want to do only what feels good for them personally, and the people who have bins are the ones who have lots of guests and are also considerate about what would make a guest feel happy and welcome.

That kind of works out ok, really.

Quite.

It's baffling that the "lots of guests/bin people" seem to find it difficult to comprehend that different people have different lives and therefore different needs......

FrangipaniBlue · 26/12/2021 16:18

@Sparklingbrook

I love that it's Christmas Day evening and instead of playing Monopoly or Charades as is tradition we're here defending having or not having a bathroom bin. Competition going for who has the fewest female visitors at the moment. Grin
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2021 16:19

What is this guest rubbish? Most people who come round and occasionally stay at my house are family and friends . I'm not running a hotel and you can't leave reviews on TripAdvisor.

People who come round are welcome to use my things within reason. They can wee and shit in the toilet - even builders - and I have soap and towels and toilet roll on display like normal people. There are tampons in the cupboard but they'll have to look or get over their shyness and ask me. I don't have a little buffet of them along with minI emery boards and a sewing kit.

I really think they only work if you're fairly light, and stay home. Other than that, a mix and match approach works - disposable for when you're out and about, reusable at home where you can just fold them up and pop them in the washing pile.

@RestrictedSection

Just got back from my in-laws. They don’t have any bathroom bins (despite having a daughter) and I’m on my period. House was full of people, including lots of inquisitive kids and nosy adults. Their kitchen bin is this piddly little thing that you can’t hide anything inside. There’s just no way to discreetly walk used sanpro from the bathroom upstairs to the kitchen bin. And if I tried to take it outside I’d be met with a million questions about where I was going.

I now know to take a bin bag that I keep in our room for used sanpro, but I hate it. Absolutely dread going there when on my period. We have bins in every bathroom in our house!

when people ask where you are going why can't you just say "to put something in the bin" ??
caringcarer · 26/12/2021 16:20

@pigsdofly, middle cardboard from toilet rolls and empty shampoo bottles get recycled.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2021 16:23

You could always wave it at them! But seriously it's all a bit uncomfortable and easily avoided by having a bathroom bin available.

Horst · 26/12/2021 16:29

We only have one upstairs and that’s purely for empty toilet roll tubes, empty shower gel bottles etc. Definitely not for San pro.

Don’t have one in the downstairs bathroom.

Onlyhereforthebiscuits · 26/12/2021 16:42

I moved to a bigger house this year….I was insistent that all three loos have bins.

My friendships are pretty much all women and I want them to feel comfortable in my home. It never occurred to me that I would need to tell them to use the bins in the bathrooms if they need to but reading this thread perhaps I do need to state the obvious after all;

“the bins in the bathroom are not decorative, please use them as you need”

I also put sanpro in bins at friends houses….I’d have thought putting it in the kitchen bin is even worse manners?! I’ve never thought bathroom bins were not for use….only on MN….

And as for expecting my guests to wrap it up and take it home with them….that’s awful and I would never expect my female visitors to do this. Ever.

onedayoranother · 26/12/2021 16:51

Used tissues? Wipes? Make up remover pads? The wrapper when opening up soap, tampons, pads etc? My bathrooms are one and two flights away from the kitchen. I think every bathroom needs a bin and every bedroom too.

We could play a drinking game and have a drink every time someone says grim
we could have a drink every time a new poster piles in without RTFT to declare in horror "but what do you do with your Sanpro/cotton buds/face wipes/condoms......???"

Again, for the hard of hearing at the back.....

Not everyone uses cotton buds
Not everyone uses face wipes
Not everyone uses disposable sanpro

and hold onto your pearls for this one.....

NOT EVERYONE HAS GUESTS!!!!
