To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

@Niconacotaco

I remember a thread where the DH worked in a covid ward and had moved out temporarily to protect the family. OP found out by accident that he had only been in the covid ward for a short time and was pretending so that he could stay in the flat and enjoy the peace and quiet. I have no idea what to type in to search for it! It might have been last year though.
Oh I’d forgotten that one! Hadn’t the OP taken on all the home schooling and everything because her DH was working away on the covid ward to protect the family then she discovered he had finished on there ages ago and had just been having a bit of peace and quiet. Awful.
stalkersaga · 19/12/2021 10:36

It wasn't this year but fuck it: my all time favourite is still the "I've had twins and need a bigger cat" thread.

PinkWednesdays · 19/12/2021 10:40

The one that comes to mind is the one where OP created a lengthy post to complain about the buyers of her home, in a “can you believe what happened to us” style, when actually the sale had completed and they should have already moved out. They even sat on the lawn having sandwiches for lunch instead of getting out of the home they no longer owned!

PinkWednesdays · 19/12/2021 10:51

@TulipCat

Just remembered another one - the female OP invited two male friends round for dinner but not their partners, and then didn't actually provide any food because apparently they are mysonginists!
That was one of the weirdest things, she invited them to dinner, but expected them to sort out their own dinner because she didn’t agree with their views!
PinkWednesdays · 19/12/2021 10:52

Does anyone have a link to the changing bag one? I read it when it was first posted but didn’t follow it!

DroopyClematis · 19/12/2021 11:04

The talking bird badge that could predict things to the OP's son.
Bonkers.

@Thewiseoneincognito

I’ve just spent the night nursing a ball of fluff was another hilarious one

Thought it was a baby hedgehog when it was actually a cushion tassel due to her strong medication 😆😂

Was that this year?

Such innocent fun, I loved that thread.

ufucoffee · 19/12/2021 11:23

@Doris86

There have definitely been a few WTF threads. The two that immediately spring to mind:

The lady who completed on the sale of her house, and was sitting there with the house still full of her stuff and eating her lunch when the new owners tried to move in. And she thought they were the unreasonable ones!

The one where the lady interviewed someone for a job at her company. She was then shocked and offended that they had done their research and due diligence by looking up the accounts for her company on the Companies House website.

I remember the companies house one. She thought it was really weird that they'd done it. She was weird.

@Gretaburley

The shaggers in the woman’s hedge. Someone suggested it was badgers!
I was following that but I can't find it any more. Was it deleted? I thought there was a twist in that thread about money being hidden in the hedge and someone was looking for it or am I getting more than one thread mixed up?
Makeuplover · 19/12/2021 11:49

Has anyone mentioned last years one where someone’s DD didn't like wearing vests but kept complaining about being cold. Also mumsnet songs from a few years ago , Secret Santa from this year , EKL and also the one about someone sitting in a car outside their house for 83 hours xx.

zingally · 19/12/2021 11:50

There was a weird one back in April-ish maybe of a woman making slow cooker dinners in a "friends" dirty kitchen for him. Having two slow cookers, but only able/allowed to use one, and some complicated entwinned history over a horse yard "friend" owned, where she used to keep her now-dead horse, and she doesn't want to cut "friend" off and stop cooking for him because she still has some manky old blankets and buckets from now-dead-horse that she doesn't want to lose access to, and she used to be friends with "friends" now-dead mum/dad. Or something.

This sounds great, do you have a link?

@rainbowmash

How am I only finding out about the Sistine Screamer today??? Fascinating!!!
It was brilliant
Scandisaurus · 19/12/2021 12:16

The one where op lived on some sort of farm with horses, and she locked in the car of a cf biking father with kids..omg it was so funny! In the end he sent his poor wife to retrieve the car I think.

Scandisaurus · 19/12/2021 12:17

Or dogs perhaps, not horses.. 😂

Pawprintpaper · 19/12/2021 12:19

Has anyone mentioned the horse riders picking up the horse pop one?

Yes this is the one that stuck out for me. He was right CF and it was one of the only posts I was hoping would get to the media so he’d be publicly shamed heh heh.
Scandisaurus · 19/12/2021 12:29

Guardai Olaf parking thread!

The talking bird badge that could predict things to the OP's son. Bonkers.
I've just gone to dig it up - I was expecting weirder, but it's just a hack-y attempt at creative writing by an OP who thinks they're the next Stephen King. The weirdest thing about it is the effort they went to, and the fact that they didn't think people would be immediately turned off by the "Heaven/Devon" cutesy malapropism.

Seems to be a common thing in the Woo community to aspire to have a creepy Past Life kid. Funny how they're all soldiers and business people, and never Victorian sewer cleaners...

lessthanathirdofanacre · 19/12/2021 12:49

The thread about someone complaining that the “unisex” toilet at the cinema was full of urinals in use. Cue much froth and outrage until it transpired that the OP had actually wandered into the men’s toilet. It was the Everyman Cinema and she had misread the sign Everyboy as Everybody. Grin Others kindly pointed out that the Everygirl loo was just down the corridor.

Vapeyvapevape · 19/12/2021 12:51

@junglejane66 yes sorry 🤦‍♀️

DickMabutt73962 · 19/12/2021 12:55

Camper Van Holiday CF

The one where the OP had had an acquaintance set up her camper van on her drive for her holiday with her four children only to take over their house the entire time, and she was pressuring OP to lock in a date again for this year. Mentioned things like 'we can babysit for each other' 😩
