To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

OP posts:

Does anyone have a link to the autumn bedding one?! I am intrigued!

The neighbours vs dog allergy daughter thread was amazing. Absolutely carnage.

TrussOnABus · 19/12/2021 01:30

*absolute. Must go to sleep.

immersivereader · 19/12/2021 01:32

That masseuse /steak thread is heartwarming

antisocialsocialclub · 19/12/2021 01:40

There was a post that ran over several different threads it went on so long.

Some fruit loop parked his ranger on OP’s drive and when she asked him to move it he just left it and went off on his bike ride. OP locked her gates and fruit loop came back to find his truck locked in but instead of knocking and apologising, he rode off and left it there for days. It was brilliant!!!

Zanina · 19/12/2021 01:51

There was a thread about the OPs partners ex, she was going on holiday with her partner and as they were leaving the daughter with OP and dad, the exW expected them to walk the dog daily even though OP had little kids of her own. Sounds flat but the OPs responses in Harry Potter references was artistic

Lorw · 19/12/2021 02:54
@Inmypjsagain that's it! Yes the person commented that how could we possibly know what ritual it was when most of us were frazzled, premenopausal women who'd been discussing a second hand changing bag for the past few days.
Brilliant comment. 👏 👏 👏 😆
I actually saved that comment because it amused me so much Grin

Believe it was JesusInTheCabbageVan

The second hand changing bag was absolutely bonkers though Grin

JellybeanMama · 19/12/2021 02:57

One that sticks in my mind is the one where a Chinese take away was delivered to the wrong house and the OP was contemplating eating it (which I think she did). Then another one was started to say they were waiting for their Chinese take away but it hadn’t turned up

RedRobin100 · 19/12/2021 03:58

I feel a bit bad making light of pregnancy anxiety, but there was one very recently where OP was early pregnancy, but was really concerned but had read that excessive heat was dangerous for fetus.

Concern was because she had been sitting WFH with a blow heater or something at her feet

Newnameobviously · 19/12/2021 04:01

There was a thread ayears ago about someone whose son stole cheese and then lied about taking it. The writer drew a vivid picture of the child covered in cheese crumbs with cheese bulging out their cheeks whilst denying ever having seen any cheese. The finishing line of the thread was "should I get a padlock for the fridge?". Nothing before or since has ever made me laugh so hard.

ufucoffee · 19/12/2021 04:41

@TulipCat

Just remembered another one - the female OP invited two male friends round for dinner but not their partners, and then didn't actually provide any food because apparently they are mysonginists!
I loved that. She didn't see why she should be expected to feed them. Bonkers.
Kanaloa · 19/12/2021 06:02

The one about the man who wants to be an alien and had some of his fingers chopped off and a bunch of other stuff. He is called black alien project on Instagram and his goal is to look like an alien.

Posters were up on that thread like ‘we can’t judge, people get their ears pierced.’ It was a madness.

AvocadoTrees · 19/12/2021 06:24

@Vapeyvapevape

Changing Christmas to the summer was equally Confused
It is in summer. Changing it to winter would be weird.
Doris86 · 19/12/2021 06:47

There have definitely been a few WTF threads. The two that immediately spring to mind:

The lady who completed on the sale of her house, and was sitting there with the house still full of her stuff and eating her lunch when the new owners tried to move in. And she thought they were the unreasonable ones!

The one where the lady interviewed someone for a job at her company. She was then shocked and offended that they had done their research and due diligence by looking up the accounts for her company on the Companies House website.

BobbieT1999 · 19/12/2021 06:48

The dog allergy neighbour one was batshit!
I hope the whole thing calmed down and op got to live a normal life with her dog.

BobbieT1999 · 19/12/2021 06:49

Wasn't there a hedgehog rescue one where the dh came back drunk and freaked about 'whys there a bloody hedgehog in the bath?!' ?

applesandbananasandoranges · 19/12/2021 07:31

The recent one where the OP was in an open relationship with her husband but he had started seeing someone who he was treating like a girlfriend. She was in complete denial and then came back with a new thread saying he had brought GF to their house while she was away.

Backtoblack1 · 19/12/2021 07:53

The beefy massage. WTAF?! 🤣

StarfishDish · 19/12/2021 07:57

The OP was called Ellie (unsure of username) and she'd gone to meet a friend she knew offline. He was called Aaron. They slept together, really liked each other blah blah blah but I can't find the thread. Anybody else?!

Winterfellismyhome · 19/12/2021 08:13

@Doris86 that was one of my favourites. She was outraged that the new owner started to rip the kitchen out Grin

PriamFarrl · 19/12/2021 08:38

What amazes me is how many of these threads I seem to miss.

user1471604848 · 19/12/2021 08:55

It wasn't this year, but I loved a thread where a lady invited 4 friends on a villa holiday in Italy (to thank them for past support). They were referred to as A, B, C, D.
Then D insisted on bringing her husband, E, along. He was known from the golf-club, and was a bit of a dick.
So the thread moved on to imagining a handsome stranger in a next-door vila who would sweep the original lady off her feet, and Mr E getting his comeuppance.
It was very entertaining!

WeeFae · 19/12/2021 09:06

@shreddednips

The one where the OP was wondering whether it would be ok to let her son take a super soaker to his friend's birthday party 😆
That one was definitely not in the last year, that was at least 10 years ago!!!
Thewiseoneincognito · 19/12/2021 09:19

I’ve just spent the night nursing a ball of fluff was another hilarious one

Thought it was a baby hedgehog when it was actually a cushion tassel due to her strong medication 😆😂

MinnieJackson · 19/12/2021 10:12

I think about the lady that was in an abusive relationship and didn't have much access to her son because of him. I think he was on probation and lived in a hostel. He was accusing her of talking to other men when she was talking to her cat etc. I hope she's ok.

BatshitBanshee · 19/12/2021 10:14

The one where OP's SIL-to-be had a very close relationship with OP's daughter, had a secret language, would go up to her room when they came over, held hands etc etc Red flag city.
