To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

346 replies

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

OP posts:

My absolute favourite was the Ranger parking thread - can’t look at pickup drivers the same now.

It lasted for DAYS and OP did EVERYTHING right.

@zingally I’ve never needed a link more than now Grin

The autumn duvet link doesn’t work.

@Queenoftheashes

I enjoyed the man who parked his car in OPs drive for several days and then made his wife face her to collect it.
That was one of my favourites. It had so much - the brother, who sounded so lovely, speculation that the owner of the car might be once slightly famous footballer and the potential of the forestry commission getting involved, and the carvery lunch ...

It was so entertaining, I could see it as a film.

WrongWayApricot · 19/12/2021 19:33

Haven't rtft. I liked the one where they thought their neighbour was keeping a prisoner because they heard noises after neighbour went out. I think I got told off for suggesting looking through the letter box before calling the police though Blush

Oh and the woman that was a bridesmaid but wasn't able to attend and hadn't confirmed with the bride that she wouldn't be there for the wedding.

@BigTD45

Does anyone remember the one with the Australian woman whose son was in a relationship with thevery controlling teenage girl? It went on for 4 threads until Mumsnet shut it down, I was gutted
The OP to that thread recently updated her third thread about the girlfriend finally breaking up with her son.

I remember that one! She was trying to do a slow fade by taking longer and longer to prep to texts. Which is fine for cooling off a friendship, not for whether or not you plan to turn up as chief bridesmaid.
Kanaloa · 19/12/2021 20:25

Can anyone link to the bridesmaid thread? It looks like something I can procrastinate with tonight! I had a look but can’t find it?

It was in 30 days only iirc but was deleted sooner anyway, which is a shame because it had me in stitches. She told the bride her sister's birthday party was on the same day, so assumed the bride knew she would obviously be going to the birthday and not the wedding. No other bridesmaid had been called in to take the place and OP was still going to dress fittings and hen do 😂
BatshitBanshee · 19/12/2021 22:20

@RandomCatGenerator it's been deleted I think - I searched for it and zero. DD was around 16ish and the SIL was late 20s. Very very odd Confused

KenAdams · 19/12/2021 22:21

Bloody hell, snapped and farted was 2018?! I really have lost time then!

Kanaloa · 19/12/2021 22:34

Oh no how annoying! Good ones always get deleted, usually due to privacy concerns. It sounds like a funny one.

ImprobablePuffin · 19/12/2021 22:56

@LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE

Was "people shagging in my hedge" this year? I particularly enjoyed the OP's comment that a hedgehog doesn't tend to say "Put a finger in my bum"
This was my thread under a previous name. Alas it was not this year it was a couple of years ago now. Bloody shaggers.
KenAdams · 19/12/2021 23:05

@OneRuleForThem

I don’t know if it was last year or earlier but does anyone remember the one where OP had a couple stay over from overseas (maybe her husbands brother??) but his wife/girlfriend locked herself away in the spare bedroom and didn’t come out for the entire stay?? Can’t remember if resolved and can’t find a link.
Oh gosh, yes, was that one ever resolved?

The money behind the bar at the wedding where people were taking home full bottles of Remy was bonkers as well.

There was an older thread where the OP's husband was dictating her potential birth plans I think that she updated this year to say she'd left him. Lovely to read a positive update like that.

powershowerforanhour · 19/12/2021 23:53

Oh lordy. The Quidditch thread on the feminism board deserves a wider audience.

We were walking past a building site earlier and this bloke who was on the scafolding shouted something down to his mate and did this irritating hand action thing. I put my shopping down and shouted back up "willy, willy, willy!" and copied the hand action

Frigginintheriggin · 20/12/2021 08:21

There was one a few weeks ago that was only on for 5 or 6 replies before it was pulled...
'I'm pregnant and don't know how to tell my boyfriend there could be 4 different fathers '
I suggested a Baby Daddy reveal party then whoosh it was gone 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣

BatshitBanshee · 20/12/2021 10:14

Oh I remember another one! The one where OPs MIL had basically started living in a hotel but somehow managed to kick out FIL and start running up the hotel bill that was being charged to FIL. They were in a different country to OP and her DH who were trying to help sort it. Bizarre. Think that could be deleted too as it was a bit outing...

PinkWednesdays · 20/12/2021 11:04

The bridesmaid one was mental! She told the bride the wedding clashes with her sister’s birthday party, but didn’t expressly say she can’t make it. She then carried on with her bridesmaid duties, including planning and going to the hen and the dress fittings, and didn’t think she needed to tell the bride she won’t be there on the day!

And she also argued against anyone who told her to just tell the bride, saying there was no need!

One of the best just started today: a poster is kicking off because William and Catherine are allowed to escort their children to the door of their school.

PetuniaButterworth · 20/12/2021 15:02

The Christmas one from awhile back where the MIL wanted to go to the OPs house for dinner despite never allowing the DH to have dinner with there family from he was 16 or something. The FIL had dinner by himself

WomanStanleyWoman · 20/12/2021 16:20

My vote goes to the one from the woman who got annoyed that her father-in-law didn’t offer her any champagne when she’d gone to his house, so kept eyeing the bottle so that her husband would pour her some instead. There was then a massive drip feed that they had turned up at a celebration to which they’d very specifically not been invited, but just went anyway because her husband really wanted to see one of the other guests.

There was quite a lot of follow-up on the FIL too. Apparently he tried generally to control what the OP drank, on the basis that he’d once ordered her one fizzy water when she’d wanted two, and also she and her husband had sometimes run into the parents at their local pub and ‘they never send us any drinks over’. (Call me Mystic Stanley, but I sensed drink was a theme.)

Oh, and she also said she should be treated better as ‘the mother of his only grandchild’ Grin
