Adult Clothes are so BORING! Where is the fun stuff?

AIBU for wanting non boring clothes? Mumsnet is insisting on advertising loads of wonderful Boden kids outfits at me, including a pink stripy cardigan with applique hamsters wearing flower hats! I want to wear things like this! It's the same everywhere, fabulous colourful kids outfits, nothing for middle aged women. Someone please start making adult clothes that are fun!

YABU - adult clothes should be sensible, navy blue or black, or perhaps a nice floral
YANBU - yep, I too would wear a reversible sequin dinosaur t shirt

Ooh place marking

minimadgirl · 17/12/2021 23:13

There's loads - voodoo vixen, Joe Browns, Run and Fly, Carolinas Dress Room, Collectif, Hell Bunny.

PferdeMerde · 17/12/2021 23:41

@crazyjinglist

YABU - I have no desire to look like a toddler! Bright colours don't suit me, I like neutrals and I find adult clothes with animals on a bit infantilising. But if there are sufficient people who like that kind of thing, shops should sell it!
Ok, There’s plenty of other style and beauty threads for you.

I'm really tempted to buy myself a Fuck Off dress from here Grin themonochromemum.com/pages/pop-by-tmm-fabrics

It's one of reasons I learned to sew....

olivehater · 18/12/2021 00:07

You should follow trinny Woodall. She had a lot of joy and fun in her dressing ( without resorting to dinosaurs).

NameChange30 · 18/12/2021 00:50

They have loads of dinosaur stuff. Plus a shark and a rainbow UFO jumper. Not my style at all but surely meets your brief!

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 18/12/2021 00:50

As loads of people have said - buy second hand! Charity shops, eBay, Vinted ... you are also doing the planet a favour and if you opt for the charity shops, a good cause will benefit.

Wins all round!

Veryverysadandold · 18/12/2021 01:30

I too have clicked on that jumper but I'm afraid YABU because they're clearly guinea pigs. I also have been known to click on fun light up trainers then discovered they're for children and let out audible groans of disappointment.

Duh! Yes, of course they're guinea pigs! I'm so stupid sometimes.

I would love to have second hand and vintage. Not a lot of it where I live though, except boring old lady clothes, and even less of the cool stuff in fat lady sizes.

Light up trainers though! I really want some! I do have gold glitter Docs, that's nearly as joyful to me.

Thanks for the links everyone, I'm investigating everything.

Not So Tiny Vikings (her site is probably closed now but will be open after the school holidays). You pick the fabric (so much fun stuff, animals etc etc) and the colour of the trim from the selection available. Her adult styles are simple and flattering, but given that it's a one-woman company and she makes everything individually, not over-priced. She's also very friendly and keen to help - you can message her directly on Facebook if you want anything specific eg longer/shorter different coloured sleeves, whatever...

ShinyMe · 18/12/2021 07:18

Thank you for all the links everyone. I am checking them out and have seen a few possibles. Sizing is an issue I think - I'm really reluctant to buy dresses online, as in my entire adult life I've found one dress so far that fits me. I am not built for dresses!

I quite like some of the Popsy things, but those dresses look SO long!

I was just coming here to say this.

I love the dungarees too but I found the old sizing too small, the new sizing is great though so I have a few pairs. I don't care that I'm in my 40s walking around like a rainbow coloured toddler. Grin

middleager · 18/12/2021 11:09

I'm nearly 50 and wear lots of vintage fashions, including Bakerboy caps, paisley dresses etc. I also have an Indie/Goth side and wear my uniform of my teens.

Often told that my age group should opt for classic blue jeans and a crisp white shirt/T shirt, a classic look like Jennifer Aniston. No thank you!

MabelsApron · 18/12/2021 11:41

Oh OP, we must be related! I say this all the time. I log on to sites like Monsoon and go starstruck before realising I’m looking at the childrenswear. Click over to the womenswear and it reverts to khakis and blacks and browns.

(Don’t get me started on bedroom furniture. The only cute stuff is in young kids’ sizes, after that you get white or pine and you’re to be grateful.)

Seconding Joanie and Harkel. Hell Bunny, Voodoo Vixen and Collectif also have some more colourful things, with a vintage slant. Gonna go read this thread now with interest!

MabelsApron · 18/12/2021 11:42

(Also I am also fat so all of those recs have a degree of plus size albeit at the smaller end.)

ofwarren · 18/12/2021 13:04

Following this post for inspiration.
I'm 41 and wear Lucy locket loves constantly. I also love a bit of Run & Fly.

Chobbers · 18/12/2021 13:33

This thread has been a really interesting read.
I learned to sew about 10 years ago and still go to workshops where support from the tutor is invaluable with fitting the garment.
I love colour in clothes and am so delighted that I can buy fabrics in the colour/ shade/design that I want.

I’m proud to say that I have made and worn some clothes that others describe as bonkers - I think they mean it as a compliment.

ShinyMe · 18/12/2021 13:42

I read a really interesting article years ago, about rethinking our outlook from eg 'does this make me look fat?' and 'does this make me look bonkers?' to 'does this make me look happy?' and 'does this make me feel happy?' and it's stuck with me. The writer had an AMAZING multicolour rainbow striped circle skirt made out of a duvet, and I want that skirt so badly.
