To say the guy in Love Actually who dumps the woman with the brother is an arse?

You know the one. I mean WTAF? Why even write that?

You have unrequited love for years, you get together, woman has brother with care needs so it's over?

But he didn't dump her. The whole point of the storyline is that her priorities were all wrong. She should've been living her own life, but instead she was putting her brother first and her own needs last. Therefore, the relationship would never work.

Wasn't expecting this many replies!

Obviously touched a nerve with some Grin

Yes, it's a bit shit and dated but I always end up watching it again.

Might watch Truly Madly Deeply now, haven't seen that for years and do adore Alan Rickmansworth.

Well she was ‘redistributed’ elsewhere by the bitchy woman that said she had legs like tree trunks. At the Prime Minister’s request.[/quote]
Because he'd fallen in love with her and he didn't want the complication. He was prime minister! Come on! Did you even watch the film?

sbhydrogen · 14/12/2021 21:37

Alan Rickmansworth is a town I'd live in Grin

That is fantastic!

comfortablyfrumpy · 14/12/2021 21:39

@FreezerBird

It's years since I've seen it, but aren't all the men arses in that film?
No, not cuddly Colin. He was lovely in it!
WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 21:42

@MrsLarry

Yes! Too many times. I thought it was more that he was angry with her for (what he perceives as anyway) having her head turned by the president and feeding him too many biscuits 😂

His best film, I think. It has me in floods of tears every time.
cloudtree · 14/12/2021 21:55

Natalie didn’t fancy the US president, he assaulted her and she didn’t know how to handle it.

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 21:59

@cloudtree that’s what I said in the first place.

HippeePrincess · 14/12/2021 22:44

@Bellybootcut

I've always been curious as to what the brothers illness is. I don't know why I'm so interested but everytime I watch it I wonder what came before and after for him.
I’ve always presumed Schizophrenia

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

"There was more than one lobster at the birth of Jesus?" Is one of my favourite lines in a film ever.
“Yes I have, Ant or Dec” is the best line Grin

@TheRooom

YABU for being invested in such a pile of shite
Going to blow your mind that some people’s jobs revolve around critiquing films. I’m sure you invest your time in something or someone that others would deem a pile of shite.

Didn't want to disappoint Grin

As I said on the last LA thread, Laura Linney ends up happily married to McDreamy Whatsisface. Patrick Dempsey. That's the one.
This was revealed in the reunion American version of LA reunion they did for red nosed ay 4 years ago.

ChippyDucks150 · 14/12/2021 23:13

Bill Night did have some cracking lines in the film in all fairness.

And the acting by Emma Thomson was superb.

Duchess379 · 14/12/2021 23:14

She stopped the foreplay, took the call from her brother and said 'I'm not busy' or something to that extent. So handsome dude knew where he stood & left.

LobsterNapkin · 14/12/2021 23:16

I wouldn't call it dumping, but yes, he did seem like an arse, I thought.

But as far as the film, he wasn't really the point - the point was the love between the woman and her brother, and the sacrifices and need it encompassed.

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 23:26

She did play Eva Cassidy as her getting-it-on song to be fair, and didn’t even offer him a drink. I’d not be bothered about sticking around either.

JeffThePilot · 15/12/2021 00:03

The film is shit and everyone is horrible (except Emma Thompson), but the guy who played Carl was hot. I was dating someone back then who looked like him, too. Good times.

GnomeDePlume · 15/12/2021 06:11

@SurferRona

Worst. Film. Ever. Just the worst. They’re all unremittingly awful, each and every one. I have no idea what spell Richard Curtis cast on some good actors who should have known better.
No, that award goes to Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black. Which was worse than Hannah Montana The Movie.

I am still waiting for Katherine Tate and Billy Connolly to come to my house and apologise in person.

Bellybootcut · 15/12/2021 11:52

I really liked Hannah Montana The Movie Blush

lockdownalli · 15/12/2021 11:55

What? He doesn't dump her. Were you at the Wine OP? Xmas Grin

Her behaviour is appalling, she treats him like shit.

The couple I couldn't see the point of was the Joanne Page/Martin Freeman pair.

peboh · 15/12/2021 12:00

The whole film is annoying really, and yet I shall continue to watch it every year whilst I'm wrapping presents and sipping wine 😅

HunterGatherer · 15/12/2021 12:42

We thought it was a family film and settled down to watch with the kids when they were 9 and 10. I can remember DH trying to fast forward the sex scenes and it just speeded up the action. GrinGrinGrin Hilarious looking back.
