To say the guy in Love Actually who dumps the woman with the brother is an arse?

You know the one. I mean WTAF? Why even write that?

You have unrequited love for years, you get together, woman has brother with care needs so it's over?

Every moment of that film is bloody awful. Yet somehow I think I've seen it at least three times!

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 14/12/2021 18:18

She's actually the most annoying character in the film imo. What if he calls when she's in the middle if a work meeting? Does she just say hold up need to talk to my brother?

SpookyScarySkeletons · 14/12/2021 18:18

@Atmywitsend29

Frankly, Alan Rickman still gets all of my anger from that movie Xmas Grin
And mine!!! The dirty rotten bastard doing that to Emma Thompson!

Although I still sob when Colin Firth goes back for Aurelia 😳😳

RuleOfCat · 14/12/2021 18:18

We rewatched it last Christmas with our young adult DC, and what shocked us most of all about it was the poor writing of the black characters, including the incredible Chiwetel Ejiofor. All three black characters exist solely as vehicles for progressing the white characters' stories, or are so minor as to be nameless. And I didn't spot it at the time, which says a lot about how I (and a lot of people) lacked awareness of discrimination back then.

It's the opening scene. It's its only redeeming feature and it sucks you in.
NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 14/12/2021 18:20

@FreezerBird

It's years since I've seen it, but aren't all the men arses in that film?
Rowan Atkinson wasn't an arse. He was the most likeable character in the whole thing 😂
WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 18:22

Even little Sam is an arse Grin

Changechangychange · 14/12/2021 18:24

All Richard Curtis films are both twee and misogynistic (which is a hard balance to strike, but he always manages it).

Bernard and the Genie was the best, primarily redeemed by Rowan Atkinson mugging at the camera like a bargain basement Alan Rickman. All went downhill from there.

GnomeDePlume · 14/12/2021 18:24

Still love the film. It's about love in all its forms, not just romantic love.

Againstmachine · 14/12/2021 18:31

I didn't see it until about 5 years ago and it's a awful film. The most likable characters are Martin Freeman and Jessica Page.

Majority of rest are awful, and people think Andrew Lincoln character is sweet, no he's like a stalker of his best mates wife.

DancinOnTheCeiling · 14/12/2021 18:32

I’m with PP that the worst is the guy who hits on his best pal’s wife with the cardboard signs. I hate that it’s seen as romantic, it’s not! Keep it to yourself or tell her quietly and say you need space to get over her but don’t declare it like that. Not been overthinking this one at all 🤣🤣🤣

MordenLarch · 14/12/2021 18:32

Why is she answering the phone to her brother all the time anyway? I can’t see how that’s helping him in any way

Haveyoubrushedyourteethtoday · 14/12/2021 18:40

Everyone always talks about the other ‘love’ stories in that film, particularly the characters played by Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. But I’ve always thought Laura Linney broke my heart the most!

Haveyoubrushedyourteethtoday · 14/12/2021 18:40

Because, love, actually. Grin
Roselilly36 · 14/12/2021 18:46

We watch this film every Christmas, it’s dated, of course, still but represents all types of love/relationships and the sacrifices that sometimes need to be made for love.

CheshireDing · 14/12/2021 18:50

Laura Linley annoys me that she won’t switch the phone off for a bit even though she has
been listing after Carl for years. It’s also rude when she says ‘no I’m not busy’ when poo Carl is sat in his pants at the end of the bed.

HOWEVER I LOVE the bit where Andrew Lincoln has to leave his apartment and walk off to Dido singing because he is so in love with someone he can’t be with, it’s so sad, so wretched.

I have watched the film a lot of times though ! 😀

Polmuggle · 14/12/2021 18:50

Natalie doesn't get sexually assaulted, she admits she fancies the US president! She was 'redistributed' by the PM because he also fancied her, which is even worse!

But I agree the woman with the brother is in the wrong. It's ok to ignore a call mid shag!

KatyRebecca84 · 14/12/2021 18:52

Watched it too many times!
He doesn’t dump her.. the brother interiors AGAIN and he takes it as his queue to leave!

OppsUpsSide · 14/12/2021 18:54

It’s not about him, it’s about her and her choice to prioritise her brothers needs over her own wishes - she loves him more.
Every story line is about a different type of love.

Chocolatewheatos · 14/12/2021 18:59

I really just watch it for the kids in the airport nowadays, the other stories are a bit shit now but his face after she kisses his cheek is just everything.

This has been my life since I’ve had to care for my mum
SaigonSaigon · 14/12/2021 19:00

Such a dated film now, and although I generally like Curtis films, I can't help but feel he's a misogynistic perv with this one. A few sweet enough stories but many more awful ones. I cannot bear the Martin Freeman one. I don't think it's funny at all. Just so pervy!

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 19:04

@Polmuggle no there was a moment on the stairs wasn’t there?!

I thought he touched her or something

Yeah but doesn't she say afterwards that she just got caught up in the moment because of a roaring fire and the fact he's the president? I might be making it up!
