You know the one. I mean WTAF? Why even write that?

You have unrequited love for years, you get together, woman has brother with care needs so it's over?

OP posts:

The guy has a bit of a serial killer look to him IMO so I think Laura Linney gets off lightly.

Nah, the arse was the best friend / wedding photographer
Yes, he’s a massive stalker type creep. Not sure what Keira Knightley is all impressed about.

Cam77 · 14/12/2021 19:56

Emma Thompson was nominated for a BAFTA for that role, and should have won.

What, for 5 whole minutes of screen time? The only thing I got from that movie is there’s a reason noone puts a cast of 20-30 into a two hour long film. Silly and enjoyable enough but it’s more like a John Lewis ad than a proper film.

Classica · 14/12/2021 19:57

Serial killer look? Grin

If he was sitting on my bed, Big Ben could start ringing right beside me and I'd be oblivious.

my bug bear is Egg Grin

I turned this on for two minutes earlier in and decided I couldn't face it. Feel like I need to remind myself how annoying everyone is in it now.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 14/12/2021 20:02

He doesn't 'dump her because of her brother with special needs', why is everyone intent on being offended by things linked to disabilities?! It's not always an issue to people!

She clearly is completely devoted to caring for her brother and there isn't room for anyone else in her life at that time. Carl obviously fancies her but maybe one shag was ok with him. Didn't need to turn into Romeo and Juliet.
@Polmuggle I’m not sure now! I always thought that the president felt her up, but she let it happen because he was the president (or in real life froze because someone was touching her up) then the prime minister comes in and thought it was mutual touching up.
I agree with your memory! The president made an unwanted advance, she felt she couldn't say no because he was the president, Hugh Grant walked in and misunderstood. It's why he then did that whole politics crossed with personal rant about the Americans just taking whatever they want, and how he won't stand for it.

Can't believe no one has linked the Jezebel article about the film - thought that was MN law for threads about Love Actually Grin

PlasticPlantsDontDie · 14/12/2021 20:03

None of the women come out of it very well.

I always felt sorry for the overweight Portuguese sister.

Why do they always make fat women act as if they’re oblivious to the fact that they’re fat and not painfully aware that everyone is laughing at them?

Name me one woman in that film who has some agency and a good outcome!

Beancounter1 · 14/12/2021 20:05

Absolutely yes she should have won! The way she holds back the tears for the sake of the children - every nuance of expression on her face, the pain under her mask - it is all there! Mind-blowingly good acting.

@Atmywitsend29

Frankly, Alan Rickman still gets all of my anger from that movie Xmas Grin
Same! In fact I think Emma T gets more as she stayed with him
Classica · 14/12/2021 20:05

In the Comic Relief 'sequel' they show that Laura Linney is in a relationship with Patrick Dempsey, so thinks didn't work out too bad for her...

Ha! I was surprised it hadn't already been posted. Usually it's linked by at least three people. In case anyone had the temerity to enjoy the crimbo shmaltz fest that is LA

Not my preferred Christmas love story (Notting Hill is still the one) but out of all the ‘love stories’ the one involving the porn stars was probably the healthiest

Bellybootcut · 14/12/2021 20:11

I've always been curious as to what the brothers illness is. I don't know why I'm so interested but everytime I watch it I wonder what came before and after for him.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 14/12/2021 20:14

This has to be the best Keira knightly impression..

@Pegasussnail

I find it frustrating too and sad. She is the one who chooses not to pursue things rather than him dumping her. But her brother is in an excellent 24 hour care facility.

She would have been able to turn off her phone and still had a very strong relationship with her brother.

Exactly. There's no need for her to be a martyr, he is receiving full time care. The bloke realises that if she is prepared to be on call 24/7 to her brother, then there's no point in bothering with her. It's a shame, but he's pretty dishy and there are plenty more fish in the sea.

I haven't seen Notting Hill in yonks but isn't it set in the summertime?
TheRooom · 14/12/2021 20:22

YABU for being invested in such a pile of shite

FeeLock · 14/12/2021 20:29

Awww, no! I think it's a great illustration of all kinds of love, some sweet & gorgeous, some dutiful, some painful. I love it! Wink

It's an illustration of how much shite women have to put up with if you ask me but each to her own...
Ozanj · 14/12/2021 20:36

@Classica it’s still my fav xmas movie Grin

Pippapet · 14/12/2021 20:38

@Ginseng1

Actually she annoys me more FFS turn off your phone after lusting after him for years!! Actually my bug bear is Egg 😹 lusting after his best friend's wife & taking all those weird close ups of her at wedding & then visits at Christmas with the signs. Wtf?
Egg! Another This Life fan, brilliant!

Yes I agree about Egg. It was made out to be so romantic, and it probably was in isolation, but the fact that he was going behind his mate's back overruled the romance, in my book.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 14/12/2021 20:38

Not a chance would Emma Thompson in any rôle have a chance with the divine Hans Gruber.

Egg should have known better, seeing as he was so hurt when Millie betrayed him with her creepy boss.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/12/2021 21:00

"There was more than one lobster at the birth of Jesus?" Is one of my favourite lines in a film ever.

Chamomileteaplease · 14/12/2021 21:09

I felt so cross with that woman who didn't turn her phone off.

Even reading your post made me cross!

She was not only rude but so bloody stupid and pathetic and unassertive and just so annoying!

Just turn your phone off and trust that you don't have to answer your phone 20 times a day to your brother is is very well looked after - you are allowed a life.

FFS.
