To say the guy in Love Actually who dumps the woman with the brother is an arse?

You know the one. I mean WTAF? Why even write that?

You have unrequited love for years, you get together, woman has brother with care needs so it's over?

I only watched it for the first time and thought that bit was sad.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/12/2021 17:56

He doesn't dump her, does he? It's years since I watched it but I don't remember that. Confused

Pickles89 · 14/12/2021 17:56

He doesn't dump her though does he? She leaves him.

MarcelineMissouri · 14/12/2021 17:56

I thought it was her that decided not to go ahead?

Dietpepsiandshirley · 14/12/2021 17:57

He didn’t dump her. They went back for a shag and she got interrupted so he went home.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 14/12/2021 17:57

I dont think he dumped her, did he?
They had an almost one night together, she cut it short. Then nothing. Dont know which of them decided not to make another move.

It's a pretty crappy film anyway, so this part wasnt all that surprising.

Atmywitsend29 · 14/12/2021 17:58

Frankly, Alan Rickman still gets all of my anger from that movie Xmas Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/12/2021 17:58

they just don't get down to it, because of the brother phoning and then doesn't he wish her Merry Christmas with a sad face?

I only watched it the other day, but am not certain, I wasn't paying huge attention.

Eaumyword · 14/12/2021 17:58

I shall start by saying I'm not that invested in this but...!Smile
I see it as her one love, her martyrdom is towards her brother. He is her priority in life to the exception of all others.
It annoys me this bit because she could have switched her phone off at least for the snog part!
But the film shows her choosing to miss out on a fulfilling life and love for herself out of obligation and yes, love, for her brother.

What about the creepy arse perving on his mate's wife?
Pegasussnail · 14/12/2021 18:01

I find it frustrating too and sad.
She is the one who chooses not to pursue things rather than him dumping her. But her brother is in an excellent 24 hour care facility.

She would have been able to turn off her phone and still had a very strong relationship with her brother.

Ginseng1 · 14/12/2021 18:02

Actually she annoys me more FFS turn off your phone after lusting after him for years!! Actually my bug bear is Egg 😹 lusting after his best friend's wife & taking all those weird close ups of her at wedding & then visits at Christmas with the signs. Wtf?

HippeePrincess · 14/12/2021 18:03

I always thought it was her daft fault not his

cheeseislife8 · 14/12/2021 18:05

Nah, the arse was the best friend / wedding photographer

CovidPassQuestion · 14/12/2021 18:08

He's so hot- at least someone else can find true love with him now...

I just want to hug Laura Kinney's character and say - look, he'll be fine for a couple of hours, go and be with Carl!

Blossom64265 · 14/12/2021 18:08

He doesn’t dump her. She is so wrapped up in caring for her brother that she can’t allow herself this moment of happiness and turn off the phone. She knows her brother is safe and cared for. She knows it makes no difference if she answers. Yet she turns away from what she truly desires.

So on one level we see the story of two besotted individuals coming together, but this story is really about how we can allow ourselves to be so consumed by love that it harms us.

Divebar2021 · 14/12/2021 18:09

my bug bear is Egg

Showing our age that we remember Egg!

I personally thought Emma Thompson was brilliant at the point she found the Joni Mitchell CD and realised… I haven’t seen the film in years and I dare say it hasn’t aged well but I loved / hated that scene.

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 18:10

I don’t think he was that into her- she was really into him and I think he thought it might be nice to give it a go and then realised she had all the shit with her brother going on.

The prime minister sacking Natalie for getting sexually assaulted by the president gets me.

But it’s a Richard Curtis so it’s fine to be an arse as long as you win a woman in the end. Even if you don’t know them or anything about them or even speak the same language so have never even had a conversation.

FreezerBird · 14/12/2021 18:10

It's years since I've seen it, but aren't all the men arses in that film?

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 18:10

Me too

I found it annoying

JHMJHM · 14/12/2021 18:12

Aren't most Richard Curtis films very much of their time though? Loads of storylines/attitudes that don't sit well under a more modern glare. I have never thought he much liked women apart from a certain uber feminine simpering type. All others are cast as mad or problematic.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 14/12/2021 18:14

@WheelieBinPrincess

I don't remember her getting fired. Did that happen? Not seen it for years.

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 18:15

@Itsalmostanaccessory

Well she was ‘redistributed’ elsewhere by the bitchy woman that said she had legs like tree trunks. At the Prime Minister’s request.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 14/12/2021 18:16

Nah he doesn't dump her, she prioritises her brother and doesn't follow up on their failed shag. Neither does he tbf, but why would he when she won't even switch her phone off for half an hour?

FourTeaFallOut · 14/12/2021 18:16

And then there's all the pot shots at the -brace for laughter - fat and unmarriable sister of the Portuguese character. And Martine's fat thighs. Hmm
