You know the one. I mean WTAF? Why even write that?

You have unrequited love for years, you get together, woman has brother with care needs so it's over?

They're all absolute bell ends. Hth

WheelieBinPrincess · 14/12/2021 19:10

@Polmuggle I’m not sure now! I always thought that the president felt her up, but she let it happen because he was the president (or in real life froze because someone was touching her up) then the prime minister comes in and thought it was mutual touching up.

MaryStuart · 14/12/2021 19:11

@FreezerBird

It's years since I've seen it, but aren't all the men arses in that film?
Pretty much the whole film is bum
FrenchyQ · 14/12/2021 19:11

I thought she meant that she couldn't say no because he was the president of the USA..as in the most powerful man in the world.

ThievesTemple · 14/12/2021 19:12

That man is my dream man, totally hot!!

SurferRona · 14/12/2021 19:13

Worst. Film. Ever. Just the worst. They’re all unremittingly awful, each and every one. I have no idea what spell Richard Curtis cast on some good actors who should have known better.

Samcro · 14/12/2021 19:13

@Samcro

This post has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.
Wow thank you mn hq, I didn't know that happened when that disgraceful term is used. First time ii have been happy to have a post deleted. I posted about colin firths character using a disablist slur.
Classica · 14/12/2021 19:14

He doesn't dump her tho

She uses her brother as an excuse to avoid intimacy

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/12/2021 19:16

I wondered what happened there @Samcro. Yes, that’s another reason this film is absolute shite.

I would agree but I had to sit through 'The Boat That Rocked'.

Fucking shocking Hmm

And it’s nothing to do with ‘modern eyes’, ‘changes in standards’ or whatever, I was on MN when the film came out and the boards were FULL of threads complaining about the use of the term. Bloody awful.

I enjoyed the film, but even in 2003 that word was deemed disgusting
PlanktonsComputerWife · 14/12/2021 19:19

I'd be irritated if someone answered their phone while we were trying to get it on.

I cannot stand a single character from that film, apart from the kid in the octopus costume, at a push.

CharlieFarnsbarns123 · 14/12/2021 19:20

There is an entire storyline which was cut from the movie, involving Anne Reid as the headteacher of the junior school, and Frances de la Tour as her terminally ill partner. No idea why it was cut.

steff13 · 14/12/2021 19:24

@OppsUpsSide

It’s not about him, it’s about her and her choice to prioritise her brothers needs over her own wishes - she loves him more. Every story line is about a different type of love.
I would not call that love, actually. Codependency, maybe.
mugglenutmeg · 14/12/2021 19:26

It's her her pushes him away....after giving it one shot, she realises she'll never be able to put her needs first and just goes back into her shell again.

Capricopia · 14/12/2021 19:33

I agree he’s shit. Why didn’t he offer to help, or tell her he understood, or ask her out again? He failed at the first hurdle imo.

Oh, I don't know. Emma Thompson was nominated for a BAFTA for that role, and should have won.

Bill Nighy was nominated too, and he did win.

StormyCornishSeas · 14/12/2021 19:37

I also agree it's her daft fault. I tend to skip that part because I find it so cringe. Turn off your phone woman

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 14/12/2021 19:42

Egg was beyond cringe-worthy in that film 🙈

The whole film was bobbins though

Apart from one of the PMs aides during the carol singing - very male voice choir 😀

Corbally · 14/12/2021 19:43

@JHMJHM

Aren't most Richard Curtis films very much of their time though? Loads of storylines/attitudes that don't sit well under a more modern glare. I have never thought he much liked women apart from a certain uber feminine simpering type. All others are cast as mad or problematic.
Love, Actually is from 2003, not the Dark Ages!
ThirdElephant · 14/12/2021 19:45

I agree with PP- her brother clearly has carers on site, she doesn't need to drop everything at a moment's notice whenever he calls. Should have just turned her bloody phone off. And also, as they're getting down to it and then the phone interrupts, doesn't she say something on the phone alike, 'Oh, no, I'm not busy'? Kinda rude towards the guy on her bed.

I think she used her brother as an excuse but really she's just too scared to actually try anything relationship-wise. Maybe it's a fear of rejection, IDK.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 14/12/2021 19:46

I love it, actually. And I don't think it's cringe at all, or 'of its time' (which makes it sound like it was made in the 50s 🤣). It's cheesy but it's one of my favourites.

Changemaname1 · 14/12/2021 19:46

He’s so hot 🥵 she should have switched off her phone

“Egg” is the worst what a creep

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 14/12/2021 19:52

My DD sent me this.. I love Alan but what he did to Emma was just beyond the pale. Silly man with his midlife crisis 😡
