How do people keep voting in the tories?

I'd love it if tory voters could say why they vote the way they do given that there's ample evidence for how utterly incompetent they are (11 years). Especially in the last election. With that not-fit-for-purpose idiot in charge - edited by MNHQ
I also keep writing to my MP saying that if they are going to pretend we have democracy then they need to scrap FPTP.

AIBU that we should allow people with no sense to vote or
AINBU am I right in that people should have to factor history and rare sense into their decision making?

The ideology driven, identity politics obsessed Labour.

Because when you earn over a certain threshold you suddenly don’t want to help anyone else.

RunningInTheWind · 14/12/2021 13:31

Because I don’t know who else to vote for - so I just put a cross in the box next to the Tory’s name to indicate “definitely not them”.

cardibach · 14/12/2021 13:32

@SexyNeckbeard

Because of you OP and others like you. So utterly sick of labour supporters being so blinkered thinking people only vote tory because they're uneducated, brainwashed, plain thick, or like the funny man with the funny hair.

People aren't thick just because they have different viewpoints to you. Your inability to debate in a nuanced way is what drives people away from engaging with stupid threads like these

Ok. What do the current Tories have to commend them? Which of their views do you find compelling? Do you honk they have the country’s best interests at heart or their own? What has made you hold that view? I’m a Labour voter. I used to completely understand the reasons people might vote Tory. I disagreed, but I could understand their view. Tories used to have a different view of what was best for the country. I disagreed with them but could respect the viewpoint.
The current crop? Venal, corrupt, self serving…I don’t think they have a principle between them. What are you seeing that I’m not?
onlychildhamster · 14/12/2021 13:36

Older people tend to vote tories.

There are plenty of older people who have fairly comfortable pensions and have paid off their houses. In some ways, they have more disposable income than a london couple on 100k who are paying childcare and large mortgage (due to having to live within commuting distance of work), never mind an ordinary couple on average wages in the regions. Due to aging population, they are a growing group.

UK has a gerontocracy, there was an article which compared the tory's latest budget on different groups in society. The only group that didn't see a drop in take home income were the pensioners.

With that not-fit-for-purpose idiot in charge - given that a few months earlier he'd been sacked from May's government as an embarrassment?

Boris Johnson wasn't sacked from Theresa May's government - he resigned in July 2018 over her Brexit plan (Chequers);

I was wondering where you were.

FabriqueBelgique · 14/12/2021 13:40

There will always be a left and a right, and people in-between, that’s just the sliding scale we are on as people.

It’s not left is “right”, right is “wrong”.

From what I can work out, the people still voting Tory believe that having Labour in charge would be even more of a shit-show. Labour has a rep for not being able to make anything actually happen, despite their promises.

Cheerychirpy · 14/12/2021 13:41

I live in Scotland so generally vote tactically to stop the SNP who have no clue how to run a country.

One of the worst thing about Corbyn got me is the way he vehemently supported Hamas. The last time I checked they were a terrorist organisation, and them and Palestine and Israel are all totally, totally irrelevant to my life. I don’t want a prime minister to give them a second thought, just as I don’t want a first minister banging on about independence. It’s just irrelevant. Get on with the day job.

Onehotmess · 14/12/2021 13:43

Why does everyone think it’s tories or labour! Open your eyes! They are not the only 2 parties!

girlmom21 · 14/12/2021 13:43

They're the only two parties who are going to win an election any time soon
RedpepperRisotto · 14/12/2021 13:43

Because the alternative would be independence in Scotland.

Siameasy · 14/12/2021 13:45

No opposition as all the other parties are loony left
My Tory MP is the best one standing and I agree with his proposals
I voted for Blair

GreenNewDealNow · 14/12/2021 13:46

The Conservatives suck.

Animood · 14/12/2021 13:47

They're the only two parties who have any chance at all of get into government in England.

Granted wales Scotland and NI is different.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/12/2021 13:48

Now that It's his turn to 'shine', has Keir managed to step up and tell us what a woman is yet?
Thought not.

@Beckert, do the Tories?Confused It was them who started the reforms:
^In 2017, Minister for EqualitiesJustine Greeningconsidered reforms to the Gender Recognition Act to de-medicalise the process, with the principle of self-identification. One of Greening's successors,Penny Mordaunt, affirmed that the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act would come from the starting place that "transgender women are women"^

Clavinova · 14/12/2021 13:51

Because they don’t read manifestos

I read Labour's Manifesto in 2019 -

We will oversee the largest extension of the franchise in generations, reducing the voting age to 16, giving full voting rights to all UK residents...

Full voting rights in UK general elections to all UK residents ??

DdraigGoch · 14/12/2021 13:53

It must have been at least a week since we last had one of these threads...

Hyperion100 · 14/12/2021 13:53

How about this. No campaigning by any party.

All manifestos are published anonymously and split across a series of multiple choice questions.

Highest weighted answer set wins your vote.

I am positive that if this were to happen, very few people would actually vote for a party that wants more privatisaton of the NHS, reduced trade with the enormous trading block 30 miles, more child poverty, more sewage in our rivers and on our beaches, worse pensions, more jobs for mates etc etc

Do you want a prime minister with no understanding or interest in international politics ? what like Trump that went well didn’t it ?
OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed · 14/12/2021 13:56

There doesn't seem to be a sensible centre ground. If there was, people would vote for them instead.

People will always stick to sound bite politics and what they know, even if it means everything going backwards and getting worse. To vote for something more radical and unknown seems risky, even if the result might make everyone's life better.

If it makes you feel better OP I voted Tory a few times when I was younger and would never again. I'm hoping for a decent opposition in the next couple of years though, that support young people and working families and actually deals with the housing crisis and social mobility issues in this country. Not holding my breath though.

Dillydollydingdong · 14/12/2021 13:58

Oh, don't be silly. If Labour could show anyone who is fit to be PM then maybe the Tories might lose next time. Corbyn? No. Diane Abbot? Definitely not. Starmer? (Better, but still not trustworthy). That woman with the red hair? I don't think so. I'm a floating voter but unlikely to float towards Labour on their current performance.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 14/12/2021 14:00

Of course YABU.
People are allowed different opinions. I don't get why anybody would vote conservative either FWIW, but they are perfectly allowed to vote whichever way they like.
Labour are a bit of a disgrace really. They should be capitalising to absolutely thrash the Tories, but they aren't.

OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed · 14/12/2021 14:00

But so far Tories have promised many, many things that haven't happened, or have happened, when they promised they wouldn't.

I'm not sure Labour would be as bad, probably on par with conservatives, but with possibly less sleaze. That's the sad thing. No party really shines as a beacon of hope for this country.
