Psychologist told me autism is a superpower

I went to see a psychologist as part of a support package offered by my employer to help with my disability and perhaps learn a few strategies to deal with the anxiety I suffer from as a result of being autistic. I was talking about how my disability affects me, and the psychologist, at the end of my story, told me that "autism isn't a disability, it's a superpower!"

She proceeded to show me a kids video about how autistic people are a little different, but awesome and spent most of the rest of the session trying to make me think positively about my "superpower". I struggle on a daily basis and have had to take 6 months of sick leave in the last two years, keep feeling desperately uncomfortable at work and barely manage to stay in employment. To do so I need constant help in my home life. I can't work from an office full-time and have semi-regular shutdowns/meltdowns. I still have 10 hours of sessions left.

WIBU to try and cancel the others? I don't know what to do. They're not mandatory, but I don't want to look like I don't appreciate my employer's offer of support. At the same time this session was painful and invalidating and I'm not sure how to do another 10 hours of this. The person is a qualified psychologist who specialises is neurodiverse conditions. If being on the spectrum was a superpower why would you need to see a psychologist?!

It's taken seriously if these protected titles are misused, so if you suspect someone is not qualified and using the title - please do act on it.

An NT qualified 'professional' negated your experience of yourself & the world in relation to you, as a person seeking support as their Autism affects their daily living so much they struggle to keep a job (& therefore be financially independent). Sadly, I am not surprised though I am sorry you are going through this.
As a person with a physical disability who was 'let go' from a position as I 'rejected the help offered' (a special chair I had to part fund when I couldn't access the stairs to said non existant chair anyway as the promised elevator was also non existant...) I'd be wary of simply cancelling the 'therapy'.

Perhaps you could email the 'professional' and copy in Occ Health, raising your concerns, and ask for a different professional with a different perspective?

Put in a complaint and ask to see sometime else

Don’t just cancel, and they need to know this person is an idiot.

ALSO I loathe the whole 'high vs low' 'superpower vs tragedy' narrative. If you've met one person with Autism, you've met one person with Autism.

This kind of bullshit is awful. I have two kids with severe autism - it is certainly not a super power. It is a bloody disability!

@Sofiegiraffe

Yes, sorry, bps not bsp.

Yes, psychologist isn't a protected title.

And as far as I know, there's no where in the UK where you can become a clinical psychologist (or as I like to call them a 'real' psychologist) without having a degree or MA listed by the bps (unless you have the equivalent in another country). But I may be wrong.
