To think there’s no way you can wipe your bum clean?

Born in a mixed race family with a Middle Eastern mother, I was always taught to wash my downstairs with water after no 1s and 2s. We have a built in mini shower head thing to just spray our bums clean, and before that we used to have a jug sort of thing.

I’ve always wondered, do you genuinely think your bum is clean if you only wipe?

The way I see it, if someone dropped a few drops of urine or fecal matter on my flooring at home, I’d scrub it clean and atleast use some water. No way would I give it a wipe clean with a dry wad of tissue! So how can your skin be clean….

Am I missing something? Do you wet the tissue before use?

Sorry for the silly question! Have always wondered.

We use wet toilet paper wipes in conjunction with normal loo roll. No smelly bums here.

Monty27 · 13/12/2021 04:30

I only poo once a day in the morning and shower afterwards before I get dressed.
The loo is cleaned once a day and to my knowledge no poo on the floor. Nor underwear. I wear clean underwear at least once a day depending on heat etc

crazykoo124 · 13/12/2021 04:36

@Monty27 sorry should’ve been clearer! I meant flooring as in just an example of how we clean things that aren’t our body (I.e not just wiping).

Do you think you’d find it easier to wash on the toilet if you had to use the toilet but already had a shower?

I always finish with a thorough wipe using a baby wipe. (Not flushed of course.)

Bussinbussin · 13/12/2021 04:37

If you dropped poo on your floor I doubt you'd just spray it with water either!

Neither method gets the area 100% spotless and germ free but it's enough to keep you going until the next proper wash.

tara66 · 13/12/2021 05:09

'Wipes' of any sort are absolutely polluting to the planet and big NO NOs!!
They do not degrade and bloke the sewage systems!

FreeBritnee · 13/12/2021 05:16

It's just not something I think about.

Anotherhill · 13/12/2021 05:17

What Tara said.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 13/12/2021 05:21

Will just loo roll wiping remove all residue/germs? No.
Will using a wetwipe after loo roll remove all residue/germs? No.
Will "washing" with plain water remove all residue/germs? No.
Will "washing" with soap and water remove all residue/germs? Probably.

Rinsing with plain water might get more residue off, but it won't get rid of it all, or get rid of the germs, you need some sort of soap for that. So honestly, if you're just using water, you're really no cleaner from a germs stand point, so it's preference only.

EIIa · 13/12/2021 05:22

You all need a lovely Japanese toilet where you can have a lovely warm bum shower whenever you fancy. Invaluable when you have your period too

I agree OP.

TheBermudaTriangle · 13/12/2021 05:23

I'm with you @crazykoo124 - the cleanest way is probably with water (I currently live in a country where it is common to have a hose attachment next to the toilet, creating a more thorough bidet).

No, in the UK/West people do tend to just use dry toilet tissue and recently 'moist toilet tissues' in addition (agree with PP that they are not good for the environment).

stayathomer · 13/12/2021 05:23

But I don't get what people do if you're away from home and have to go to the toilet? Nice to think youd never have to poo unless you're home but that's not always feasible!

KeepApart · 13/12/2021 05:23

I think my floor would be cleaner tbh if I wiped it with dry tissue than if I poored water over it. Mechanical removal and all that

Honestly I don't think its 100% spotless if I wipe. But it's clean, I shower daily. No one's eating their dinner out of my arsecrack!

tiredanddangerous · 13/12/2021 05:24

A wash is all very well at home but what do you do at work? A wash after every pee sounds like a lot of hassle and I'm not sure water cleans very well anyway.

KeepApart · 13/12/2021 05:29

Realistically the only thing that's going to get it thoroughly clean is a good scrub with soap and water as @AlmostAJillSandwich said

But its not practical to do this. I'm not sure that a bum is ever going to be a germ free environment whatever method you use, as it will quickly get recontaminated. If you prefer water that's great, and probably the best method would be a wipe with a damp cloth. But I don't want to wash the cloths and I don't have a bidet type situ so toilet paper it is!

lanbro · 13/12/2021 05:29

I have a little bottle of gel called Wype, you squirt it on to loo roll and gets rid of loads extra 'residue'. My parents have a bidet, I found that especially handy when younger on my period and using towels instead of tampons

Coffeepants · 13/12/2021 05:37

It’s not about being germ free, it’s about cleanliness. I do the same with a bidet or jug and would use a plastic water bottle or similar when out. I do carry toilet wipes when out for my children as well or at a push will wet toilet paper and use it to wipe. Always wonder about this too, wiping is not adequate to clean.

MysweetAudrina · 13/12/2021 05:40

I spray it with flash bathroom and a damp j cloth.

HarlanPepper · 13/12/2021 05:41

I use loo roll and I wouldn't say my arse is surgically clean, no. But it's clean enough. It's usually covered by at least two layers of clothing, I almost entirely use it for sitting on rather than as a food preparation surface, so it's not something I lose sleep over.

ShippingNews · 13/12/2021 05:46

I have an electronic in-toilet bidet. It washes with warm water, front and back, and then dries with warm air. No paper required.

I think the same as you about dry bits of paper - how on earth does anyone think that this method cleans them ? Erk .

thesunwillout · 13/12/2021 05:47

@MysweetAudrina

I spray it with flash bathroom and a damp j cloth.
😂
GoldenOldBoy · 13/12/2021 05:49

How do you dry off after a bum shower? Do you use lots of tissue or is there some sort of communal towel next to the bidet?

loislovesstewie · 13/12/2021 05:49

@Monty27

I only poo once a day in the morning and shower afterwards before I get dressed. The loo is cleaned once a day and to my knowledge no poo on the floor. Nor underwear. I wear clean underwear at least once a day depending on heat etc
So do I.
sashh · 13/12/2021 05:50

Urine is sterile so wiping / washing is just for comfort.

As for No 2, if your bowel is healthy there shouldn't be much to wipe.

If you are splashing water then there is a danger you are spreading fecal matter outside the toilet.

HarlanPepper · 13/12/2021 05:51

This obsession with other people's arseholes is peak Mumsnet. Read a book or something instead.
