To think dogs don't need clothes

I don't have a dog (although I do like them) so maybe I am missing something here, but this morning at least a third of the dogs I've seen are wearing coats or jumpers I know this didn't used to be a thing. Surely they don't need them? One I saw even looked uncomfortable in a badly fitting coat.

Some dogs need coats otherwise they shiver in this really cold weather.
Also it helps keeps them cleaner from the wet mud and stops their fur getting wet. X

My little smooth coat chihuahua shivers and refuses to walk if his coat doesn’t go on. Doesn’t mean he enjoys having it put on him though. Sigh.
