To think dogs don't need clothes

I don't have a dog (although I do like them) so maybe I am missing something here, but this morning at least a third of the dogs I've seen are wearing coats or jumpers Confused I know this didn't used to be a thing. Surely they don't need them? One I saw even looked uncomfortable in a badly fitting coat.

I have Italian Greyhounds - they definitely need jumpers/coats in cold weather or they would struggle. In all honesty, if they didn't want to wear them, I couldn't make them - one of them is a right wriggle-butt!
@BackInBlackAgain the coats are usually a simple 2 strap design so no wresting needed. The 'clothes' you say they don't need help keep tummies warm and dry, sometimes free from irritation. Not sure why a dog might need a coat on it not a jumper tbh.
Really? You are more than welcome to get a coat on him, hes 9 stone by the way so good luck with that.

RedWingBoots · 10/12/2021 13:27

@StepCatsmother Smile I always imagined Italian Greyhounds as wearing stylish designer coats not a just a hoodie.

StepCatsmother · 10/12/2021 13:30

@RedWingBoots haha, yes that would be my other iggy who won't even put a paw in the wet, he is very elegant Grin

His brother, who is pictured, is much less bothered and just wants to be comfy :)

I can’t take my little dog out in the winter without a nice thick coat on otherwise he just stands and shivers bless him, dogs get cold too and I reckon it’s rather neglectful of an owner to make a dog go on a walk when they are shivering the whole time 😁

Thanks to all those who've shown their dogs it's lovely to see them

@stayathomegardener

Hmmm my whippet needs a coat our refuses to go out if cold but falls sideways to the floor when attempting to "dress" him. Conversely scruffy lurcher needs to be wearing a Christmas hat for general cheer so YABU.
Oh that IS cheering! Grin
Poetrypatty · 10/12/2021 13:36

My doggie has her own half of the coat cupboard I can picture it all on little hangers Grin
All the dogs are very well loved and fortunate I would say. Especially getting the outfit warmed up on the radiator!

Mine is an elderly Jack Russell and they don't have an undercoat so are susceptible to cold so she does wear clothes in the winter (assuming she comes out from under the duvet)

lotsofdogshere · 10/12/2021 13:39

My young lab wears the Cato he was born in and doesn’t need anything else
I bought a rainproof for the spaniel in the hope of avoiding mega daily grooms. Getting her to walk in it was one challenge. Combing out the mats it caused in her coat was more of a challenge than the usual shower, condition, comb
The only dog I ever owned who needed a winter waterproof was a short haired rescue and then, only after age 11 when he began to feel the cold
I’m a grump about little dogs in fancy dress - I meet them on walks and they usually seem to be untrained bark monsters 🐶

iloveeverykindofcat · 10/12/2021 13:59

@ToughTittyWhompus

Lol do you really think dogs don’t feel the cold, wind and rain?!
Pretty sure the corgi does feel it, but prefers it to the feeling of being in a coat. Any form of restraint or restriction is a grave offense to his royal person really, but he tolerates the harness because he knows he doesn't go without it.
allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/12/2021 14:01

YABU. I live somewhere very cold and both my dogs refuse to go out without their coats.

Boy dog is a rescue from somewhere hot, so he behaves like winter is personally attacking him when it dips below 10c.

I don't generally approve of silly dog clothes, but I make an exception for Christmas jumpers.

Why start a thread saying that something isn’t needed when you in fact have no idea what you’re talking about?

NowEvenBetter · 10/12/2021 14:04

Like, you could have started a thread asking why people put their dogs in coats? Or googled it? Weird.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 10/12/2021 14:10

My beagle refuses to go out in the cold and rain. He also refuses to wear a coat.
Lazy git.

Notjustanymum · 10/12/2021 14:11

“To think that not all dogs need coats” There - fixed that for you ( Mother of lurchers here). Vet and kennel club recommend that they wear them when the temperature drops below 6 degrees C…
Nothing wrong with a well-tailored fleece, jumper or coat for the thin long-dogs, but I’d like to see anyone try to dress a Newfoundland 😂😂😂

TheWernethWife · 10/12/2021 14:23

In our local dog friendly coffee shop the other day there was a greyhound type dog wearing a onesie, with a hole around the tail area obviously. He seemed quite comfortable in it!

Next doors standard poodle has a onesie, she looks gorgeous in it. Keeps her clean and dry as well.

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 10/12/2021 15:46

Another cold weather outfit…. and the answer to where do we keep them, her own shelf in the utility room, she had a nice array of leads and collars too. They’re all still there, but we lost her in September on her 14th birthday, I miss the old bag but my goodness she had a lovely life Smile

Shade17 · 10/12/2021 15:55

Thin-coated sighthounds absolutely need coats when it’s cold. They have thin skin and virtually no body fat. If you need a coat, they need a coat. Some even get cold in the house during the night. Mine hates cold/wet/hot weather, completely useless. Built for one thing at the expense of everything else and that’s catching and killing small furry things. Moves like a missile.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 10/12/2021 16:02

My old dog ‘developed’ an intermittent limp and I spent small fortune at the vets trying to diagnose the issue… we all finally worked out the limp developed during rain. Dog hated rain ( large gun dog) bought a winter coat that was waterproof, no limp.

I agree though, I hate seeing dogs dressed up due to the sheer capriciousness of their owners. But some dogs just want/ need a bit of warmth and protection from the foul UK weather.

Little dogs lose body heat quickly. Our poodle cross starts shivering when it is cold. He benefits from a coat.

Early this morning he jumped on the bed and wiggled under my duvet for a bit of warmth.

DrivingHomeChristmas · 10/12/2021 16:36

I used to be very anti dog clothes, but my daughter came home with a Christmas jumper for our dog and put it on her. When she took it off,, the dog bought it to me and wanted it back on. She even takes it to bed with her! So now we are dog clothing converts!

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 10/12/2021 16:42

Looks like the stripe ddoggy outfits aren't for sale from the site anymore...

bookwormnerd · 10/12/2021 16:43

My dog gets cold easily and shivers in cold. She has a couple of jumpers and coats for when we go out or she gets cold in house. Her fur is very short so she wouldn't want to go for a walk without this time of year. When it's warmer she does not wear one. We have water proof ones for a walk in the rain. She would absolutly refuse to go out without something on if cold
