To think dogs don't need clothes

I don't have a dog (although I do like them) so maybe I am missing something here, but this morning at least a third of the dogs I've seen are wearing coats or jumpers Confused I know this didn't used to be a thing. Surely they don't need them? One I saw even looked uncomfortable in a badly fitting coat.

@Poetrypatty

Lol do you really think dogs don’t feel the cold, wind and rain?!

Not that they don't feel it, but I'd have guessed as much as cats or foxes or other animals who don't wear clothes. Having said that I've found this thread enlightening and have got a new perspective from everyone.

You reckon that cats don't feel the cold?

I've told the wee furry shites that they have their own fur coats, but the buggers still prefer being wrapped up in fleeces or sleeping between us at night for the warmth. One of them would be perfectly happy swaddled in fleece like a furry Baby Jesus from October to April every day.

Joystir59 · 10/12/2021 16:45

My JRT goes rigid and refuses to move if I put a coat on him.

Joystir59 · 10/12/2021 16:46

He does wake me up on cold nights though wanting a blanket putting over him. Entitled little sh*t

cherrypie66 · 10/12/2021 16:50

@Santahatesbraisedcabbage

I have 2 scrawny Lurchers.. They love a jumper!
Awww gorgeous I also have a lurcher who loves his coat and loves being warm
SnekkinOnDown · 10/12/2021 16:54

Two of my dogs don't have much hair so they 100% DO need clothes. I wouldn't want to go for a a walk naked at this time of the year 😂

The photos on this thread have made me very happy.

Thetwomutts · 10/12/2021 17:15

My dogs are huge fluffy things and don't really need costs

The German shepherd never wears one- we do put dog boots on him if the gritters have been round though because otherwise he gets burnt paws and licks them raw

The St Bernard cross does wear a raincoat - before we got him at 18 months he lived outside year round, now he is a pampered house dog, the rain must be a bad memory for him because he refuses to go out in the rain without his pony rug 🤣

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 10/12/2021 17:17

Mine doesnt need a coat but if its raining heavily he qears one so he doesnt have to be fully dried or locked in the kitchen until his dry.

iloveeverykindofcat · 10/12/2021 17:20

@GirlOnPfizer same! I didn't realize how cute these long pointy dogs in their little coats are!

Doobydooo · 10/12/2021 18:48

No dog clothes here, but won't refuse a blanket to top and tail underneath.

Smaller dogs or dogs who have less hair need an extra layer.

pastypirate · 10/12/2021 18:54

My dog has an equafleece. It's got all 4 legs. It gets called a onesie. He's a show cocker. It means he can play in the sea and be dry in his bed snoozing in minutes.

Can't see the issue.

@Poetrypatty don't let looks deceive you. Smol doggo was caught eating her own poop earlier today.

XenoBitch · 10/12/2021 18:56

I have a greyhound who has no fur on her buttocks, tummy and chest. She really feels the cold, so she has several coats, jumpers and onesie type PJs.

HoseMeDownWithHolyWater · 10/12/2021 19:29

My dog hates coats or jumpers. She also hates being cold. I've been known to but her a blanket and carry her wrapped up in it when she's been chilly.

Cryalot2 · 10/12/2021 19:42

My dog like many is s house dog, she came as a young puppy and we have an old house with high ceilings and stone walls. She got cold so we got a little jumper or 2 which she happily wore . When there is heavy rain she will not go out without a coat. ( she goes to the box her clothes stay in and tugs at something.
When she gets groomed in cooler weather she will wear something.

It depends if the dog is a house dog or what it has been used to.

When you have small dogs a little jumper keeps them clean. At night many dog owners have flouresant jackets for both them and their dogs.

I have seen long eared breeds have special hats to keep their ears warm clean and dry.

Trinacham · 10/12/2021 19:43

Of course certain breeds do. My family have Italian Greyhounds and Whippets.. they are shivering wrecks when out in the cold (and not because they are nervous Hmm) they have very fine short hair and little body fat.
Longer haired dogs, I'd agree with you there.

sophiasnail · 10/12/2021 19:52

My tiny toy poodle gets very cold, very quickly because he is extremely skinny (we do feed him!). He wears a jumper all day every day from about October to March, with a waterproof coat on top for walks. He can take his own jumper off, but very rarely does.

MrsMouse03 · 10/12/2021 19:58

My little sausage needs a cost or he won't go out.

gogohm · 10/12/2021 19:59

Mine has a waterproof one because wet dog isn't a good fragrance unless you are in monsters inc. His is also reflective high vis in case he slips his lead at night (has happened to chase foxes)

Thwackit · 10/12/2021 21:50

My skin is waterproof but it doesn’t mean I like going out in the rain naked! Lots of dogs find rain unpleasant as they get cold and their fur takes a long time to dry, or they have thin coats that makes them shivery. Dogs that like running about in bushes can find a coat a coat protects them from thorns etc, as well as ticks and other bugs. Polar fleeces are great for keeping dogs with long fur clean as you whip off the coat rather than them needing a full bath. It’s deffo not just about putting a dog in a tutu for cuteness!

k1233 · 10/12/2021 22:46

My dogs get asked if they want their coats. If they walk off, no coat. You know they like them when they hear the velcro rip open and come running. I think when you have extremes of temperature (low single digits in winter to 40s in summer) nothing is going to be comfortable at either end without assistance. I don't use heaters, so we all (including dogs) add a layer if cold. Usually they are naked during the day and coat at night. If it's cooler (15 degrees or so) during the day they will get a light polar fleece coat to keep their back warm.
