'They've got their own lives' and other stock phrases

I'm an adult social worker and I hear words to the tune of 'X never visits/helps because they have their own lives' many times a month.

Another popular one is 'I've worked all my life and now I have to pay, but if I'd sat on my arse my whole life / was an immigrant (etc) I'd get it all for free'.

Or another popular one, 'the GP gave me your number as my mother/father/aunt (etc) needs to go into a care home right NOW' - and 9/10 times it's a either health need not a social one or the person is nowhere near care home ready.

Tell me yours for your job, make me feel better about the Groundhog Day that my job is at the moment?

Stop talking to the troll and it might go away!

The thread reminds me of an old job where one man, every single time he came into the office, would say, "Cheer up, it might never happen." I wanted to batter him with the hole punch.

I’m a receptionist at a legal firm, we have walk in clients as well as calls - honestly the things I hear day to day are draining, sad and you get to know who is full of shit and not after a while - whatever the situation !! There’s stories I hear that will make your toes curl, that’s just the person to me at reception, before they’ve seen/spoken to a solicitor- I’m obvs under the same laws of confidentiality as OP - but wow, the OP - same as me and others haven’t given any detail of a specific person ! Nor would we 🤷‍♀️
But yes - the phrase ‘well, what happened was …’ makes me sigh, I don’t actually want to know your life story - I just need a detail to direct you to the correct dept 😡

blueshoes · 07/12/2021 21:30

@julieca

My office job involves various legal compliance - why don't you stop doing x, y and z, it would make your job so much quicker. Usually suggested by men. Me - mmm yes it would make it quicker, and open the company up to risks as it would also be illegal.
Rushes to julieca. I do AML compliance.

'If we ask for these documents, the client will never use us'. Yep, just go and get it.
'No other major big shot competitor asks for these documents, we will be laughed out of the room'. Really surprised to hear that but makes no difference to the risk. Go and get it.
'The client will walk away if we ask for these documents.' Nothing would make me happier. Now go and get it.

And they get it Grin

“Bob had an emotional response”

Corporate finance-speak for when someone disagrees with you.

PinkAndPurpleClouds · 07/12/2021 21:31

@DillDanding

Local government - 'I pay your wages.'

No, you don't. Fuck off.

Yep, the ones who say this (and also say it to police, doctors, nurses etc,) usually pay very little - if any - tax. They are also the ones who carp on about the Royal Family 'living at the taxpayers expense.' The ones who moan about ANYthing being at the taxpayers expense rarely pay any tax! If any at all!

I agree. Why are people feeding it?
CaptSkippy · 07/12/2021 21:32

I work in tech-support. 9/10 times when I hear "This problem is urgent and we are in a hurry to get it fixed," it is not nearly as urgent as they claim and they are not even available for an appointment to let us fix it till a week or two after they called.

ancientgran · 07/12/2021 21:33

@Thursdaymiami

Social workers really are treated the lowest of the low. Yet very few actually would take the job and step up to try and help people whilst constantly being fucked from every direction, the government, the council, the families, the general public.

The social worker who dealt with my mother was fucking amazing. And I wouldn’t begrudge her moaning about generic phrases when she’s had a tough day.

The one who dealt with my elderly relative with dementia was totally bloody useless. I don't think she's got any right to moan when she completely ignored an elderly woman in extreme need. I was thrilled when she resigned, the next one wasn't perfect but at least she tried.

I wasn't overly impressed with the one in child protection who was telling a story about an abused child and followed up with, "Of course children from rough areas won't react like ours would." I told him I was a kid from a slum and I'd be as upset as anyone else.

HunterGatherer · 07/12/2021 21:33

Yes, I've been doing my physio exercises every 2 hours Hmm
Nope you clearly haven't and we can tell.

ImFree2doasiwant · 07/12/2021 21:35

Local authority housing officer

"I pay your wages" (never worked)
"All the foreigners get housed " (all the "foreigners" accept "undesirable" properties that locals don't want.
"Would you live there?" (If I was homeless, yes).

00deed1988 · 07/12/2021 21:35

Used to work in a betting shop...multiple times a day "Got a tip for me love??? ha ha ha" and my stock response "Don't bet"

saywhatagain · 07/12/2021 21:35

@DillDanding my mum worked in the housing benefit office and would get that comm

Whoops posted too soon.

Was trying to say the 'I pay your wages was almost a daily' retort from people not hearing the outcome they were hoping for.

OP posts:
julieca · 07/12/2021 21:36

@HunterGatherer yes! When asked if I have been doing my physio - most of the time. Really not at all. Sorry too embarrassed to be honest.

blueshoes · 07/12/2021 21:38

I imagine hygienists must hear it all about how often their customers floss and GPs how little their patients drink a week.

saywhatagain · 07/12/2021 21:38

@00deed1988 or being a waitress and someone saying 'here's your tip love, DaftHorseName in the 2.15 at Aintree'! Hilarious and never been head before Hmm

5zeds · 07/12/2021 21:39

I think @flymetotheloon is allowed to have an opinion and I’m not sure why anyone has to “take sides”. I see a lot of “professionals” as my child is disabled and we don’t have a SW because so far I haven’t been able to bear the throw away comments they must make between themselves about us and our lives. It’s a hideously invasive experience. That doesn’t mean OP is dreadful at her job or anything like that but her post would hurt me if I had ever been in a position to say those things.

My pet hate as a Mum of a larger family “rather you than me”. I mean literally multiple times a day when my children were small. WTF! Such a weird thing to feel you need to express as someone walks past you in town.Shock

thefourgp · 07/12/2021 21:40

Customer; “you’re treating me like a criminal” when they have to produce identification and take part in security checks before using their banking/savings accounts.

Absolutely, mr/mrs customer. I’ve never met you before in my life but I’ll bypass the industry standard identification/security checks because you don’t think you should have to follow them and I can take your word for it that you’re not a fraudster and the thousands of pounds you want to withdraw belong to you. Hmm

Jellykat · 07/12/2021 21:41

I work part time in an antique shop.. if i had a pound for every time someone says 'its like an Aladdins cave in here'!.. (original)

ancientgran · 07/12/2021 21:42

@blueshoes

I'm teetotal as is DH, it is very annoying when HCP refuse to accept that. DH on one occasion gave in and said, "Yes I have a glass of champage for the toast at a wedding." Gleeful HCP, "I'll but down you're a social drinker then." Yes that's right, about once every ten years. Doctor thought it was hilarious when he followed up about the "social drinking."
JudgeJ · 07/12/2021 21:43

@TheProvincialLady

OP is very clearly talking about my my great aunt Kathleen Hunter of 45 Larch Road Wolverhampton and my faith in social care is now in TATTERS
You must be fuming.
1234comeonbaby · 07/12/2021 21:45

How is the OP taking a bashing but the teachers here aren't being told they are unprofessional? Quite a few in this thread?

Because its anonymous and light hearted

KrispyKale · 07/12/2021 21:45

It is funny that hcp just assume patients lie about drinking. Thus now forcing truthful ones to lie in order that the right info be recorded.😂

1234comeonbaby · 07/12/2021 21:47

@flymetotheloon

I think you're already there mate. Try flying back to Earth
