To think many are jealous of social media influencers

There's a couple I follow on Instagram and it's obvious some of the things they show are ads and that's fine. When I watch itv it's free because there are ads, that's the world. You either pay for a service or it finds another way to make you pay.

But has anyone else notice how instamums attract so much negativity? It seems to be nothing more than jealously! They're not harming anyone and no one is forced to follow

They're vapid sales/marketing people. Only the gullible believe everything they see on IG or social media.
The idea of children being videoed or photographed by a parent and uploaded to the internet to make money is vile.

Depends on the influencer though, surely?

I can't stand Mrs Hinch and her ilk, but I do like ThingsIBoughtAndLiked and Mary Orton. I've bought several things they've suggested and not regretted it.

I also like Jamie Beck and bought a few of her prints for my house.

Similarly, I follow Sally Hughes and Sasha Wilkins and always like a look at their recommendations - they're pretty scrupulous about saying when it's an ad and when it'a not.

I tend to just...not follow people I don't like.

Sali Hughes claims to be a journalist and not Influencer. She's definitely the latter. I don't believe for a second she uses Head & Shoulders.

onlychildhamster · 06/12/2021 16:13

@Mercurial123 she can be both. she writes articles about lifestyle too, doesn't she. I also don't believe claudia winkleman uses head and shoulders either! But she is a host for a telly show more than she is an influencer! She is a celeb paid to advertise a shampoo. the thing is if celebs can do it, why can't ordinary girls from essex and milton keynes?

I think the issue is a lot of people do seem to 'trust' influencers more, i don't know why, but maybe cos they live in ordinary houses and have lives that resemble ours much than claudia who is neighbours with tony and cherie blair...

Fair enough. I wouldn't class her as a journalist but that's just my opinion.

I don't trust celebrities or influencers.

Yeah Sali Hughes wasn’t always great about disclosing her use of Botox (which I felt was important when she’s reviewing e.g. anti ageing products and foundations) or disclosing paid promotions. AFAIK she’s compliant with the requirements now but I stopped reading as I’d lost trust - if I just wanted to read a paid-for advert I’d pick up a magazine.

Influencers set themselves up for being trusted specifically. From the language they use to the videos they make etc.

When I see Demi Lovato or somebody advertising trainers I am very aware that this is a poster made by the brand with celebrity endorsement on the side of the Skechers shop to sell trainers.

When Mrs Hinch comes up in someone’s feed, alongside pictures they will see from people they follow because they know, with a colloquial and friendly comment written in the same language you would use when recommending a product to a friend - well it isn’t rocket science. They make themselves seem like a friend.
