To think many are jealous of social media influencers

pebimo6 · 03/12/2021 12:06

There's a couple I follow on Instagram and it's obvious some of the things they show are ads and that's fine. When I watch itv it's free because there are ads, that's the world. You either pay for a service or it finds another way to make you pay.

But has anyone else notice how instamums attract so much negativity? It seems to be nothing more than jealously! They're not harming anyone and no one is forced to follow

I dont do social media, but i have always thought, and perhaps this is a bit weird, that if that was me, i would be permanently shitting myself in case popularity waned and my income got shot to shit.

for this reason, i dont have much judgement, it's a harsh world after all.

Not my cup of tea though. I prefer to keep my beauty, talents and awesomeness all to my lonesome little self Grin

WeirdArchitecture · 03/12/2021 19:09

I am also baffled as to why so many people waste valuable time and energy indulging in something that doesnt give them joy.

It's like the internet version of Marie Kondo, you know? If it doesnt make you feel joy, just exit the fucking screen and relax. Don't waste your breath criticising it, 'pointing and laughing' at people like an insecure 6 yr old. Jesus henry, lol.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/12/2021 19:12

@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind

Jealous of what though? That they get sent free tat? I don’t need tat in my life.
A lot of them also get paid ££££ to promote said tat.

£10,000 for a couple of posts about how you just love Missoma jewellery or Hush clothing would be pretty tempting.

hopeishere · 03/12/2021 19:49

I don't like time portraying a lifestyle and then advertising products that are nothing to do with that lifestyle. For example there are influencers I follow who promote really cheap clothing brands but on other hand are carrying Chanel handbags themselves so you know it's fake they would never ever wear that stuff themselves.

I have a friend who is trying to become an influencer and it is just utterly cringemaking to watch. A 40-year-old woman jumping about and changing her clothes for a reel. I'm embarrassed for her.

@GetTheFlockOutOfHere

If you knew me and my life you would know I’m not jealous (and also that I’m a nice person!) but I’m not going to convince you of that so it doesn’t matter to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s just a morbid curiosity/fascination.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 03/12/2021 19:58

@hopeishere

You make a good point. A very well known influencer with oodles of money has started promoting a brand which, after having done some Googling and seen its in China and trust pilot reviews are less than 2, there is NO way she has even worn/ordered a single thing from there in her life! She’s just posting website photos and saying it’s great!

PinkiOcelot · 03/12/2021 20:00

Anyone who needs to follow an “influencer” is pretty damn sad in my opinion. What the hell are they anyway?!

I’ve managed to get to my age without that necessity.

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 03/12/2021 20:01

which ones are we talking about?

Roominmyhouse · 03/12/2021 20:12

I think the problem is how disingenuous so many influencers are. They are often selling a lifestyle they aren’t even living. Some people manage to stick to their USP and advertise but pick and choose what they sell carefully. Others will do any old tat which comes their way and have short memories on what they were saying was the best ever product a month back. And then there are the ones that join MLMs.

sqirrelfriends · 03/12/2021 20:18

I know a few wannabe influencers, their lives are not what they portray on social media.

I don't envy them alt all.

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 03/12/2021 20:32

Nah I don't envy them, I enjoying following some but notice that they never have a day off really, occasionally they will turn their phone off for a day but otherwise they have to put up 20+ stories up every day to keep the content up. Every holiday or day out with the family they are still effectively working.

Alot of them seem to suffer from anxiety as well so long term I don't think it's actually good for someone

Thedogscollar · 03/12/2021 20:35

I don't follow anyone therefore I'm not jealous of anyone.
Why would I be jealous of these people? Confused

5128gap · 03/12/2021 20:39

I admit I don't really get it. No disrespect to the women who do this, but I just don't understand why there's a demand for it. To me its almost demeaning yourself if you elevate random women who have not done anything remarkable, to role model status, and allow them to 'influence' you. They are ordinary women, no more or less admirable than other ordinary women, so why would they sway your decisions?

Mary46 · 03/12/2021 21:11

A few I follow. Mrs Hinch range is overpriced in tesco loungewear.

I would imagine stress and anxiety would be off the charts for a lot of these influencers. Their entire life is a self imposed one person MLM where their entire livelihood depends on remaining publicly popular, and in order to stay popular and relevant and keep the clicks and likes and follows and retweets coming, they have to keep pushing the envelope, keep pushing more and more content, all the while avoiding the cancel culture landmines that are a random moving target. Sounds a god awful way to live, no matter how much money it gives in the short term.
tallduckandhandsome · 03/12/2021 21:42

They're not harming anyone

Never? What about the woman who adopted a baby from the developing world, used him for photos and portrayed herself as an earth mother and then gave him away?

It’s all a grey and white blur.

Maybe you are a nice person, but your post(at 18.26.) didn't show that... It was really catty. I based my comments on that post, which was mean-spirited.

Annoymouser2 · 03/12/2021 23:06

Sorry i looked up influencers online, im a horsey type person so looked up horse infliencers and 1 came up whose about 10 with her mother then browsed others and another girl around 18 and horse mad crying online about her battle with anorexia, i was crying myself how sad for that girl, comparing 2 kids i think its dangerous for young girls or even their mothers putting their kids out there, because they may become that 18 year old.. Sad, i think social influencers should be over 18 with their own minds and not pushed into by pushy mums, im gathering mother of horse mad child is pushy :(

I don't understand this view I have young dc & nieces & nephews so of course I care and have an opinion about SM. It's not a question of me not following certain people & then all is fine in the world, there is a toxic dark side to SM & just because it doesn't have an impact on me doesn't mean don't worry about it.

Aussiegirl123456 · 04/12/2021 00:27

Not jealous. I think they’re ridiculous, vapid and shallow, not what I ever aspired to be and not great role models for my daughters.
Frankly, I’d be embarrassed to be gifted the lifestyles they have. Good for them if they’re truly happy, but from the ones I’ve come across, none of them genuinely seem to be. All it seems to be is a breeding ground for mental health issues.
I’m so glad my older teen daughter is more inspired by women who’ve achieved great things through their creativity, ideas and knowledge.
Each to their own!

I think influencers are a way for big companies to scrimp on the advertising budget. In the past, companies (or at least the big ones) had to have multi million pound advertising campaigns- they had to be produced for television, print media, cinemas possibly, billboards etc. whole teams of stylists, photographers, production staff had to be hired. Celebrity endorsements are pretty established too in the pre social media age, it definitely cost £££ for Rolex to pay Tiger Woods.

Enter influencers. Yes some of them charge a lot of money but they are often doing their own makeup. yes some probably do hire people to do video editing/filming for them but they don't need a whole team to work on them. Also probably only the likes of Zoella hire external stuff, most of the influencers probably do all the work on their own. Its much more economical. Some brands are even using multiple micro-influencers (who have only 10k-50k followers) who are happy with a lower rate of compensation and might even work only for freebies. Even if you give free stuff and pay 10k to 50 micro-influencers, it still pales in comparison to the millions companies used to spend on advertising plus you reach a more targeted audience i.e. my DH does not care about handbags but I do buy bags. At the same time, you are pushing all responsibility to the influencer- if she misrepresents anything, you would enjoy the benefits of any initial upsurge in sales (when fans believe her) and then when she gets 'exposed', you can claim that you never knew anything about this and proceed to cancel her contract. You are completely clean and innocent of all wrongdoing. Its a no brainer.

But thats why influencers exist. They are a part of the growing gig economy. some are incredibly successful but most aren't. However, the people deriving the most benefit from such a set up are big companies, not even Zoella.

gofg · 04/12/2021 01:57

No I actually pity their empty pointless existence.

I agree with the above comment.

I'm long past the age of jealousy, but don't believe I have ever been shallow enough to envy them. They are so obviously fake, and I think they are shameful role models to young women. I think they are trying to make up for a lack of a meaningful life, and it's quite tragic.

Mincepiepoptarts · 04/12/2021 04:40

It’s this kind of thing I find gross. CCTV in your kids bedroom. Sharing video of them playing and sleeping. Is nothing sacred to these grifters?

Insert1x20p · 04/12/2021 05:19

It kind of depends- there are a few that filled a definite gap in the market- post 40's fashion for example. There are a few people I follow who I imagine just started out with a "what I'm wearing" account and then picked up followers and so got paid to promote certain brands. So long as they're transparent it's fine and I just like getting some ideas of outfits etc. that are affordable, look good on normal people and are practical, which is where I think the influencers have succeeded where maybe traditional advertising failed. I work in the social sector and "peer led programmes" are known to be very effective so you can see why influencers are.

I get annoyed with the hard sell to kids re Roblox/ fortnite etc but I have just had the conversation with my DC about how they get paid to tell you to buy Robucks.
