To not be that into hot chocolate

It makes my stomach feel weird even if it’s with oat milk. Loads of threads suggest it for Christmas Eve and someone yesterday was even asking for tips for their H.C ‘station’?!

YABU: It’s winter in a cup
YANBU: Way too rich- yuk

I quite like the stuff you get ‘abroad’ with churros.

However as a general principle, chocolate should be on its own, in bar form, and not in drinks, cakes etc.

GertietheGherkin · 02/12/2021 09:14

I don't mind the occasional Hot Chocolate. Some of the Coffee shops do nice Christmassy flavoured ones.

I couldn't be doing with the clutter and faff of a 'Hot Chocolate Station'

FizzyTango · 02/12/2021 09:14

I adore chocolate, can eat the stuff forever. I’m not fussy either, any chocolate, posh or cheap it all has it’s place. But hot chocolate is just erghhh. The first sip or two is nice but then it’s just too much!

MajorNeville · 02/12/2021 09:15

I have a hot chocolate station, I don't particularly like hc myself, in fact don't like any hot drinks, but my dc 16-23 like it. It's just a few things on a tray which makes it all easy to put together, with a variety of choice. I'm not dancing around the house singing about my twee hot chocolate station which is the image some of you have, lol

fakereview · 02/12/2021 09:17

I don't like hot chocolate. I like to eat chocolate right out of the fridge, if it's not cold I don't like it so I definitely don't like drinking it. Not keen on chocolate sauces or ice cream though either, so it's not just about the temperature. Chocolate bars and chocolate cakes are ok, anything else I don't like.

DukkaDukka · 02/12/2021 09:40

I prefer a cup of tea.

silverlace · 02/12/2021 09:42

I agree. Hot milk makes me queasy.

I went to Bruges with a friend and she raved about a hot chocolate cafe there.

I went in and ordered what I though would be a modest drink. I was presented with a bowl containing a pint of hot milk and a ton of rich sweet chocolate to stir in to it.

I persevered as she was loving it but the canal boat trip later was uncomfortable!

What things are on this tray that is permanently out?!
5thnonblonde · 02/12/2021 09:52

To a pp- I’m not upset about it! Just wondered if I was the only one slightly bemused by the apparent love for it. As I explained in a pp, there’s plenty of stuff I personally dislike but can see why others enjoy but this one baffles me Smile

I did have chocolate & churros in Barcelona once and they were awesome- but it was more like a thick chocolate custard in an espresso cup and I don’t think I finished that so much as dipped my churros in... Its the big mug of sickly rich hot milk I’ve got the main issue with I think

A hot chocolate in Spain with a brandy - lovely.

Proper hot chocolate made with chocolate and milk in a posh cafe yes.

As a drink to have more than once or twice a year. Nope. But I can't stand lattes either - too much hot milk.

BubblegumLife · 02/12/2021 09:56

Nope.. Not unreasonable at all. Hate hot chocolate, along with chocolate milkshake and any kind of cereal that makes your milk turn chocolatey 🤢

MajorNeville · 02/12/2021 10:11

@Happy1982ish it isn't permanently out, it's out this month, lol. it is the only thing I have out on my worktops so not cluttering anything up and just a little bit of silly festive. I have 2 different hot chocolates, one Cadbury, one whittard, a jar of marshmallows, a jar of sweets, a chocolate sauce and a jar of gingerbread flipz (which won't last long!), there's also some sprinkles and some candy canes, oh and a silver spray which dd wanted. I'm a very normal person, my decorations won't be up till mid December and I'm no where near ready with gifts. I think people have this image of people who do an occasional thing which maybe twee as being full on Elf, which is just not true. I'm sure if I went into the homes of every single person in the world I'd find something I don't like, but I have zero desire to critique other people.

evilharpy · 02/12/2021 10:18

I can't stand the stuff, but I don't like chocolate full stop and I can't drink milky tea or coffee, I like a tiny drop of milk.

My husband likes hot chocolate and I joined a FB group about the Velvetiser to see if there were any nice hot chocolate recipes I could try for him as a treat. It's like a cult Grin

EssexLioness · 02/12/2021 10:33

The only one I like is Twinings Swiss chocolate powder mix. But even then I’m not that fussed! It’s ok but last time I had a cup was about 3 years ago. I have a major sweet tooth but do find hot chocolate quite sickly. But then I have never been keen on chocolate flavoured anything eg milkshake, mousse - I would rather have my chocolate neat and untampered with! 😆 And the calories in one mug can be a bit of a shock, not worth it in my opinion

Classica · 02/12/2021 10:42

But what's baffling about it? It's sweet and creamy and chocolatey. Pretty standard flavours that lots of people enjoy. I hate the idea of eating baked beans but I have no difficulty understanding why other people might love them.

Mrsjayy · 02/12/2021 10:43

Its all a bit too claggy for me sticks to the roof of your mouth add squirty cream / marshmallows/Bailey's. To the mix urgh ! The thought of that velvitiser gives me the. Heave.

Chasingaftermidnight · 02/12/2021 10:52

I really want to like hot chocolate. But I don’t think I’ve ever had one that I didn’t regret afterwards.

mafted · 02/12/2021 11:35

It does seem to be a bigger thing now than it was when I was a child, maybe due to coffee shops being more popular.

I think all the MN posts about not getting hot chocolate stations etc are ridiculous though. I don't know anyone in RL who doesn't have a hot drink area in their kitchen, I know a few people who've installed whole cupboards dedicated to being breakfast stations and nobody bats an eyelid. This is no different.

We have hot chocolate, coffee and mini marshmallows out all year round near the coffee machine. At Christmas I add a few extras, it makes the kitchen look more festive.

I had one last night. Finished it and said to my partner that at some point I'm going to have to admit to myself that I don't like hot chocolate.

WhoWants2Know · 02/12/2021 12:01

I like it in a thermos on a long walk or car drive during the winter.

thenightsky · 02/12/2021 12:12

Its not worth the calories.

I prefer old fashioned cocoa powder where I can regulate how much or how little sugar to add.

Yestoallthecake · 02/12/2021 13:02

I can’t stand tea or coffee. For me hot chocolate (maybe with a shot of peppermint schnapps) is the only acceptable hot drink when pushy weird people insist that I must have a hot drink.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/12/2021 13:04

I don’t really like it. Never have really. Maybe the occasional really good one, at an outdoor event, but even then I tend to prefer a straight forward cup of tea!

I also really don’t need the extra calories so won’t be training myself to like it (doing this with croissants was a mistake)

My kids like it though.

mellongoose · 02/12/2021 13:06

I don't like coffee so HC is my post winter walk outside beverage of choice. That's about it though. Can't remember the last time I had one at home.
