To not be that into hot chocolate

It makes my stomach feel weird even if it’s with oat milk. Loads of threads suggest it for Christmas Eve and someone yesterday was even asking for tips for their H.C ‘station’?!

YABU: It’s winter in a cup
YANBU: Way too rich- yuk

Depends on the hot chocolate - powdered stuff is horrible. Properly made hot choc with actual flaked chocolate is great - and if you use dark chocolate it’s really not that sweet. I have a velvetiser but I don’t drink coffee and tea so I use it fairly regularly (not everyday) when I want something warm.

Belledan1 · 02/12/2021 06:34

I dont like it nor coffee. I only like weak milky tea. Dont like any of the flavoured teas either.

Theunamedcat · 02/12/2021 06:38

I actually love it but I love chocolate and sweet shit by the bucketload I have it instead of food sometimes with zero regret (until I step on the scales)

But the rest of my family not so much even my children dd would rather drink iced coffee (in winter) ds 1 plain milk ds 2 juice

RampantIvy · 02/12/2021 06:38

I think it is weird the way it is fetishised on mumsnet. DH and I very occasionally enjoy the odd mug of cocoa, but generally prefer tea or coffee. I can do without the empty calories.

EnidFrighten · 02/12/2021 06:41

It's another weapon in my maternal arsenal, very useful if I drag the kids out on a rainy day and they get grumpy.

A cup of hot chocolate is like a reset button and theirs only has about half a teaspoon of powder in so it can't be that bad. I wouldn't give it often though, every month or so!

ElftonWednesday · 02/12/2021 06:41

I like it but I couldn't drink it all the time. I'd rather have a flat white.

GnomeDePlume · 02/12/2021 06:56

@Sparklingbrook I'm glad you put a warning on that link. WTF indeed!

Why would anyone want to create a space in their home which looked like behind the counter in a coffee shop?

Also not a huge hot chocolate fan. The occasional one is nice but only the low calories version. Also no idea why anyone would have extra cream and marshmallows. I like all the component parts well enough but mixed together just sounds like a gloopy calorie bomb.

megletthesecond · 02/12/2021 06:57

Yanbu. I never have it.
I'd rather have tea and chocolate biscuits.

HeronLanyon · 02/12/2021 07:03

Very underdeveloped sweet tooth here. Maybe feel like some cocoa (for some reason I’ve never called it hot chocolate) once or twice a year. Really hate the thought of whipped cream or marshmallows or sprinkles/glitter etc on/in it.
But can see some would find that fun esp for children. This whole ‘hot chocolate station’ ‘frenzy’ seems commercialised insta driven ??
Horses for courses though.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 02/12/2021 07:04

I too hate it. Foul stuff. The last one I had (when I was about 15) made me projectile vomit. Awful.

Agree it is fetishised on here. ‘Snuggles with my babies under a fleecy with hot choc made at our Hot Choc Station’ conjures up a very exacting image of someone I am highly unlikely to know in real life.

Same here Grin

TopTabby · 02/12/2021 07:08

No, no no, too milky & always has a powdery taste to it. I've totally given up on it after never enjoying it.
Can't stand lattes or any milky drink so I'm a dead loss with Christmas drink menus!

boobot1 · 02/12/2021 07:11

Agreed, I dont like hot chocolate its too sweet. Don't mind a mocha though.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 02/12/2021 07:20

Not for me either. It's transfer test season in NI and the Facebook support page is full of links to coffee shops and cafes offering a free hot chocolate to children who have sat their tests each Saturday. I hate the stuff. Unlike lattes etc, there is nothing to offset the sickly sweetness. And it's rarely hot. More like lukewarm. Bleurgh!

And, as an aside, free hot chocolate for 11 year olds might seem very generous, but not when you consider the queues of parents waiting to spend money on similar treats for everyone who accompanies said child. It costs a small fortune to get that free hot chocolate!

Naughtynovembertree · 02/12/2021 07:21

We are fans of chai latte here and milk with cinnamon and honey.

senorafridgidaire · 02/12/2021 07:23

Not a huge fan here, on the rare occasions we have it (maybe once / twice a year) I use cocoa and just a tiny bit of sugar so its not really sweet. However.....I had to kill an hour yesterday and found a starbucks, didn't want coffee as it was too late in the day so had a hot choc instead and it was actually really very nice. Just the standard one mind you, no toffee fudge brownie reindeer marshmallow flavour.

MelonTits · 02/12/2021 07:23

I like it occasionally but it’s more like a dessert than a drink

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 02/12/2021 07:27

Haven't had a hot chocolate for about 20 years. I don't dislike it, but I'd rather drink tea.

PurpleParrotfish · 02/12/2021 07:29

Not a hot chocolate fan, but mocha coffee for me when I (rarely) buy coffee out. All the chocolate but not sickly sweet AND caffeine too, what’s not to like?

Hotchocolateandcake · 02/12/2021 07:31

Yanbu, despite my username. I'm not actually that keen on hot chocolate.

It always looks amazing with all the cream and marshmallows. In reality it makes me feel a bit sick. I'd much prefer a cup of coffee.

ThinWomansBrain · 02/12/2021 07:35

rarely like hot chocolate that I don't make myself.

Cocoa, water, 1/4 teaspoon stevia, dash of milk

alternatively - mug of hot mulled wineBrew

RaininSummer · 02/12/2021 07:40

I don't get it either. Sickly stuff. Have a cocoa about twice a year with no sugar. It's odd as I like chocolate.

SarahBellam · 02/12/2021 07:48

We were given a velvetiser and I occasionally have a hot chocolate made with cocoa and a little sugar, or the 80% cocoa from Hotel Chocolat. They’re quite small though, and that feels about right as a pudding now and again.

WellBuggerMeSideways · 02/12/2021 07:48

So much depends on the hot chocolate you choose.

Water is a no-no, a decent hot chocolate is comfort in a cup, and that is only achievable with milk. So that's a lot of options out already. If you're going to have a hot chocolate, you need to stop worrying about calories.

I have discovered a Swiss brand a few years ago that is really nice. More expensive than the rest, but worth it - not too sweet and full of cocoa.

That's if I don't make my own. Lots of cocoa powder, sugar in a ratio of cocoa: sugar 2:1, hot milk. Topped with whipped cream and chocolate flakes. No marshmallows; I find they make a hot chocolate far too sickly.

Add a nice biscuit. Yes, it has the same amount of calories as a meal.

Mind, a few years ago Costa were doing a Lindt chocolate cup, which was basically melted chocolate with only the smallest amount of milk added. It was heaven. Wonder whether that's still around...

AlCalavicci · 02/12/2021 07:50

I like Whittards 70 cocoa powder, I make it with full fat milk and though I am not over keen on marshmallows I put 2 or 3 mini ones in to stop a skin forming. .

But got chocolate station ? A Christmas drink ? Sprinkles, flake, ginger bread bites ( wtf!) , whipped cream. All a big nope.
