To not be that into hot chocolate

It makes my stomach feel weird even if it’s with oat milk. Loads of threads suggest it for Christmas Eve and someone yesterday was even asking for tips for their H.C ‘station’?!

YABU: It’s winter in a cup
YANBU: Way too rich- yuk

Yes HC is available all year round so don't know why you have to drink gallons of it over Christmas when you're eating lots of rich and fatty foods too.

TheLeadbetterLife · 02/12/2021 00:08

Some people think the John Lewis ad is an integral part of Christmas. That’s total bollocks too.

5thnonblonde · 02/12/2021 00:08

One of the posts there suggested putting the HC in a slow cooker all day with a ladle for endless hassle free cups all day Envy

Love it, especially the maltesers one with squirty cream on top

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 00:09

Mulled Wine. You can shove that too, hot wine is all kinds of wrong and reminds me of Beechams cold and flu sachets. But at least it disappears after Christmas.

Swirlywoo · 02/12/2021 00:09

@Sparklingbrook

Shock

I am even more confused!

Most hot chocolate is way, way too sweet, but I do like mine, made to my own taste: oat milk, 2tsp cocoa powder and 1tsp sugar per cup, nutmeg and some kind of alcohol 😆

crackofdoom · 02/12/2021 00:17

Also, I don’t really see it as a Christmas beverage, when we have an overload of sweet stuff anyway. It’s for when you’ve been out in the snow/ on a long cold walk. I’d say January/February would be peak hot chocolate season.

5thnonblonde · 02/12/2021 00:19

@crackofdoom I don’t like it anyway but especially can’t imagine ever wanting it after a buttery mince pie and a few sugary quality streets (both acceptable festive Fayre in my book!)

It depends what sort of mood I'm in. Post Pregnancy most hot chocolates leave a weird after taste as if milks gone sour in my mouth, even if I don't add milk to it. The same after taste that had me running for a Pregnancy test in the first place. I do occasionally enjoy a costa hot chocolate but only if I'm not having a cake or muffin at the same time. Pre Pregnancy if I had one at home it would have to be bournville cocoa powder made with a bit of milk and sugar to sweeten it

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 02/12/2021 00:35

I like proper cocoa with hardly any sugar. But "drinking chocolate" is usually far too sweet. Although the Options salted caramel is nice.
DS1 otoh is a hot chocolate fiend. He likes it made with coconut milk, whipped cream and vegetarian marshmallows.

EvilRingahBitch · 02/12/2021 00:42

I love hot chocolate but if it's not the sort of thing you like then obviously that's perfectly reasonable for you not to like it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/12/2021 00:49

When I lived at home my dad and I took turns to make hot chocolate every night we were both in. Milk heated in a pan, a little bit of hot water, no faffing with cream or marshmallows.

I have never, ever had it since he died when I was in my mid-20s.

RobertaFirmino · 02/12/2021 00:54

Opened this thinking it was a thread about Errol Brown.

TheTeenageYears · 02/12/2021 00:58

If you make hot chocolate with good quality dark chocolate (85% plus a tiny bit of milk choc) and not powdered muck it's a totally different drink. It's not sweet or sickly and the sugar content is a fraction of most commercially available hot chocolates.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/12/2021 01:02

It's okay not to like hot chocolate.

I don't like tea and I don't like coffee. I have so far not been run out of town. I also don't like mince pies or turkey or stollen bites. That's okay too.

Mrbob · 02/12/2021 01:32

I like HC but who the fuck needs a “station”. Why would you have more than one cup a day max? More commercial bullshit

ilovesooty · 02/12/2021 03:06

I love hot chocolate, cream and all. To me though you can have it any time of year and it's an occasional treat which is like a dessert in its own right, not something to be consumed in addition to a whole load of festive stuff.

Redsquirrel5 · 02/12/2021 03:07

I agree way over the top.

I suppose each to their own but my cocoa will be staying in the cupboard with the coffee, mugs and tea pots.
I like an occasional one but squirty cream is revolting.
Cocoa from a health food store is a lot different.

I had a hot toddy in my local pub when I went in freezing.😁

TheBabyBoo · 02/12/2021 03:16

I don’t really like it, I prefer coffee. But to be fair, I don’t mind a little bit of white chocolate in a coffee. Not enough to make it a mocha, more like instead of a spot of milk.

Kanaloa · 02/12/2021 04:12

@Getabloominmoveon

I’m with you, but for different reasons. Ok for an ice rink, up a mountain, or if you’re under 12. Otherwise NO. Have a grown-up drink without all that sugar!
Confused

‘No you can’t have a hot chocolate Eleanor! For goodness sake, you’re twelve now. Grow up.’

When did drinks get an age limit?

Anyway, I think hot chocolate is ok. I don’t drink tea or coffee so it’s nice to have a hot drink sometimes when I get in from the cold and rain. I wouldn’t pay the silly Costa prices for them, but I wouldn’t buy a coffee somewhere like that either.

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/12/2021 04:22

The Velvetiser gets me. Who has the space and level of engagement to invest in one of these. Think of the planet. Surely one of the top ‘unwanted gifts’ of 2021.

The odd mug of pump street hot chocolate when it’s v chilly though, very nice.

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/12/2021 04:24

Here it is - www.hotelchocolat.com/uk/velvetiser-hot-chocolate-machine.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-7nyraLE9AIVWeDtCh2-eAIJEAQYASABEgLc-vD_BwE.

Actually the very idea of a drink being ‘smooth and velvety’ literally makes me want to gag.

AwkwardSquad · 02/12/2021 06:30

I like a very occasional hot chocolate but agree that they’re generally far too sweet and it’s too much milk in one go. Either that or they’re thin and watery and taste of disappointment.

I did have the most amazing hot chocolate in Venice one winter which was so so good. It was basically liquid chocolate and served in tiny cups. Sighs happily while reminiscing…
